Think you could craft the perfect bargain? From USA Today bestselling author Sarah K. L. Wilson comes the second book in this stunning new fantasy series. Allie Hunter thought all she had to do was make an exchange to buy back her father's life. She was wrong. Mortals are so often wrong about the Faewald. Usually, that kills them, or mires them in bargains that will suck their life out sip by sip.
With Allie caught in a cage and the Fae she had once tormented her new captor, can she strike the right bargain to save everything she loves?
For lovers of The Cruel Prince and An Enchantment of Ravens comes a world of violent fae royals, trickery, and magic. Grab the second book of this hot new series today!

My heart has been found (finally) so now I'm ready to write this review. I'm a little tired, so here's to hoping it comes across eloquent enough. 😂😜
Of course the moment the ARC was offered I snatched it up. I don't often hang around Fae worlds (because they center dark magic) but when it's painted as evil I enjoy watching how the story plays out. AND THE ENEMIES TO LOVERS TROPE. O.O I DIE EVERY TIME.
It's like a weakness of mine . . . . ?
*clears throat* Anyways, this book was basically pure beautiful craftsmanship (I had some issues, but that's normal.).
Setting: The Fae kingdoms and Fae fantasy world. If one were able to see it's true nature it would be considered hellish, because the Fae live a lie (and I'm intrigued to learn more backstory because it sounds like some of them started out human???!!! *gasps*). Lovely details painted the scenery. We got a tiny glimpse of Allie's world.
Description: WONDERFUL. MARVELLOUS. NEVER MISSING A BEAT. I was caught within its magically spun webs of words. The glistening crystal details yet terrifying actions kept my interest (if that's not to witty for you)! lol
Plot: Well worked and surprising. I love when in the Fae world I struggle to spot cliches. It allows me to become invested in the book, because cliches don't interrupt the flow! A twisty end and I appreciated the author's ability to weave a deceptive Fae world. It takes a lot to be a tricky author (one that confuses me).
Romance: HAVE I NOT ALREADY SCREAMED IT??!! ENEMIES TO LOVERS FOREVER. 💖💖💖💖😍😍😍😍 Also the fact that they're kinda friends now (which means it goes from enemies to friends to lovers!!!!!!!!) is freaking me out because I don't know whether I should trust THAT BACKSTABBING TWIG OF A GUT. (AKA the *coughs* naughty Fae child who needs to be protected.) I'M IN LOVE OKAY? OKAY.
Content: Ehhh. Some crude comments. More fantasy violence than gory violence (but both were present). Some kissing scenes (not very detailed). My movie rating is PG-13 ... mostly because of the violence/dark magic/crude comments. It's actually pretty clean compared to a lot of YA.
Characters: THEY BROKE MY HEART INTO A MILLION PIECES. AND I LOVE THEM TO DEATH. Also, they're believable with emotions and weaknesses. It's hard to watch them fail, but it makes their victory more sweet. OH AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY LEARNING SOMETHING. They grow!! It makes me so happy to watch their arc move! ^.^
Issues: So I knocked it down half a star because there were a few typos, some info dump places, and areas that made the pacing feel off. It was enough to ruin my enjoyment of the book for those moments. I also was a little displeased by certain aspects displayed within the book...but Wilson is doing a good job at portraying evil as evil. *shrugs*
Overall: I NEED THE THIRD BOOK ASAP. O.O 😍
**FTC DISCLOSURE** I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I'm not affiliated with the author in any way nor is my review biased. I'd like to remind you that this is my opinion, so if anything I stated bothered you, please don't take it personally. It wasn't ment as an attack! Thanks! :)
Exactly perfect for the hole in my heart left by Sarah K.L. Wilson's Bluebeard's Secret series.
Allie Hunter has been tricked into the magical iron cage by Scouvrel, shrunken to a few inches tall and in the hands of the Knave of Courts from the Faewald. His adventures with her are hard to understand, much less predict, since he doesn't trust her with his schemes. We meet the Sooth, the Balance, the lords and ladies of several Courts, and we see the twisted romance growing between Allie and Scouvrel.
I can't wait to read the next book, Fae Nightmare.
for the second installment in a series that goes straight to the heart!
The sequel to Fae Hunter, Fae Captive gives us Allie caught in a cage and the Fae she had once tormented her new captor.
Her father had been captured too and his fate is much more gruesome than that of our Allie. He is in agony and the fae make sure she knows it. Locked inside her cage at Scouvrel's mercy, Allie tries her best to hold on to the hope of escape for both herself and her father. But fighting the fear of being shrunken down to the size of a hand and imprisoned in a strange realm that's both amazingly beautiful and terrifyingly horrible... it may just be a little more than our Allie can handle.
Scouvrel vows to be her ally, but his games and bargains are never quite as they seem. He is after all, a fae - 'tangled and gnarled, a twisted thing of emotion and passion, ambition and cruelty with no hope of being anything else.'
So Allie has to learn to bargain and strike the right deal to save all that she holds dear. Thrust in a dangerous game of treachery and deceit, she must overcome her fears and start paying attention. After all, a hunter must always properly learn his prey before dealing the deadly blow. Bargaining for survival at every step, Allie needs to find out why all the Faewald seems to want her, escape from her cage and what's even worse, thwart the plans of her own sister.
Just as the first in series, this second installment is written in the same easy to follow narrative with a fabulous wordbuilding. It is just as fast-paced and perhaps even more captivating. I loved Allie as a character and rooted for her from the very first page of book 1. And I love her even more now. Here she matures and starts to learn that not everything is quite black or white. And her inner struggles are masterfully portrayed. Her fears, her anger and disappointment, as well as that little touch of gentleness and yes, even love ... they practically leap of the page. Brilliantly done!
I sat in my cage, alone and heartbroken realizing that nothing was what I thought it was. Not my town. Not my family. Not my ally here in the Faewald. Maybe not even me.
I also loved the complexity of Scouvrel. As a character, he is one of my favorites. 'What kind of creature was so utterly gorgeous and horrific, all tangled into one? ... He was gorgeous and horrifying. Lovely and awful.' Both inside and out. And I really LOVE him!
Full of twists and turns that you won't see coming, this little tale will grab you from the very first page and keep you at the edge of your seat till the very end.
If you are a fan of all things Faerie, Fae Captive and The Tangled Fae series are a MUST READ!! They are dark, twisted and yet so very beautiful; violent and deadly but also full of gentleness and enchanting.

Fae Captive gets all the stars ,even though it make my ugly cry at 2 A.M ,and want to throw my Kindle across the room . 😭😂Sarah Wilson is a bloody genius . She's way too good at what she does . 🥰😂😭
Edit: I am slowly making my way through the series after stopping at this one for no particular reason. That ending got me again!
I have been waiting for this book since I finished the first in January. Besides Acotar, this is my favorite book about Fae. They are more cunning and cruel then the others I have read about and I am so here for it! When I saw it was available sooner than I had originally thought I couldn’t resist diving in straight away.
Allie and Scouvrel are back. Allie is still determined as ever to but obviously he isn’t going to let her go just yet. I like how the first book was about him stuck in the cage and second book is all about her being stuck. It’s fun to see both sides of the coin. Their banter is stronger than ever and there feelings are definitely changing between each other. I mean, I wouldn’t be able to resist him even if he does use a glamour. He is just so irresistable!
The plot keeps ramping up and more is at stake. We also get more from Allie’s sister and I can tell you right now, I do not like her one bit. I really hope she ends up getting what she deserves. There are more than one plot twist and it’s amazing how this author can pack so much into a smaller book. Mad props!
This series is one that has grasped onto me and won’t let go. The world building is done well and the changing of the setting is always exciting. I love that even though a few days pass in the fae realm but time works different and it could be more in the mortal realm. This plays out at the end and man, that ending was intense! I can’t wait to see how this will all turn out.
Overall, I can’t help but love this series. It gets better and better with each book and I am sure that book three will be no exception. Hold on to your feelings, folks!
I enjoyed the second book in this series more than the first. Our protagonist Allie spent the first book carting around a prisoner in her magic cage; this book, she's the one in the cage in an unfamiliar land as she tries to figure out how to rescue her lost family - including a sister who's become an evil fae queen. Scouvrel is a delightfully fun character - we do love a stabby fae with a mysterious agenda - and Wilson's otherworld is a vivid place for adventures.
→Fae Captive (Tangled Fae #2)← Author: Sarah K. L. Wilson Genre: Fantasy, YA, romance Age Rating: 12+ Spice: 0🌶/5 Content Warnings: no cursing, however there is magic, and violence, it gets progressively more violent, but it's not super gory Will I read more books by this author if they have any? Yes! Amazing author :D
~Thoughts~ I don’t have much to add. I am still flying through these and loving them! It was an interesting twist to change who was in the cage so quickly. (iykyk ;D )
–Quotes– “Make a bargain with me, Little Hunter,” Scouvrel whispered, holding up my cage to stare inside. His dark eyes held a deep emotion I didn’t understand.
He rolled his eyes. “You have conquered my soul and planted your flag in my heart, and yet, surprisingly, that has not brought the Faewald to its knees. Where is my Hunter? Where is the one who swore to make us all pay?”
Would I feel better knowing he could die at any moment or better knowing he might live and keep me captive for a very long time?
Some kindnesses tie a knot between two creatures that isn’t easily cut.
I stole a look at Scouvrel. He looked so small now that I was larger than his hand. And so vulnerable with his dark lashes lying against his silky skin. I bit back sympathy. Since when had Scouvrel needed that from me? He could take care of his winged self just fine.
“Then I shall try to play the man, if that is what pleases you, Little Nightmare.”
“I hate you, Scouvrel,” I said, frustration welling up inside me. There was no escape. There was no way out. “That’s the spirit!”
I was done hunting bears and cougars. I was done with ghouls. I was going to hunt Fae. Yeah, I’d said that before. I’d meant it before, but never more than here beside my bleeding father who had suffered to come after me. Never more than seeing those innocent children with round ears – mortal children with flushed cheeks and tearful eyes.
“I will keep you out of her hands by any trick necessary. I will lie. I will deceive. I will carve my body into pieces and sell it a piece at a time to keep you to myself.”
“You married me without telling me!” I shot back, horrified. He grinned through his fury. “Best decision I ever made.”
Because tomorrow I would go back to the circle. I was going to dance around it and call the Fae. And this time when they came, I would be ready.
Initial placeholder review: I enjoyed myself immensely while reading this (ah, Fae bargaining! vivid world descriptions!) and can hardly wait to get into book 3 as soon as it comes out~
Full review: Usually, second books suffer from “second book syndrome” where they primarily serve as a bridge to the third (and often final) book in a series. Not so for Fae Captive – instead, here is where the series starts to hit its stride. Allie is trapped in the iron cage she originally used to trap Scouvrel, with little resources or bargaining chips of her own. At his whims and mercy, she is now the most valuable bargaining chip in Faewald as he flits all around in the goal of stirring up trouble to set a high-stakes game and draw out Hulanna, the Lady of Cups and Allie’s twin sister and anyone else interested in such a temptingly delicious mortal prize. Usually one would think that if the main character is in a cage at the mercy of the whims of those around her, the story would be dull – but this is the Faewald, and the Fae with their tricks and machinations are always anything but dull. Allie is ever trying to get ahead as she learns the rules of trickery of the Fae, but finds herself one step or more behind no matter what she does. This push-and-pull of her attempts to learn to and be tricky versus the experienced trickery of all the Fae lands her in some very interesting situations, and in each new situation we see more of the Faewald and the twistedness of its inhabitants. The Fae love games and thrive on trickery – those are pretty much constants in any Fae story ever written – and it is this tangle of tricks and traps and spoken and unspoken truths against the backdrop of the glamors of the Faewald which make this story so much fun to read. Allie in her cage just as much as the story careens from one scene to another, one snare to another trap, one just-out-of-reach hope to one dashed hope, and one temptation to another denial. Fae Captive is a wild ride which comes vividly alive through Allie’s rather naïve gaze upon the Faewald, tinged with an innocent ignorance which causes Allie more trouble than she could ever expect. While in the first book Allie’s ignorance of and pushback against Fae ways was frustrating, now that she is both trapped and stuck in the Faewald, she is forced to seek out any information or tidbit which might help her survive the Game and rescue her father and Hulanna too. With one notable exception which I called out the moment it started to reveal itself and Allie never pieced together despite ample whacks-over-the-head levels of clues being revealed to her until she was flatly told what had happened (you’ll know it when you see it), Allie actually assimilates her growing knowledge of the Fae and their ways much better in this book than the last – we see actual progress in her ability to survive in this world and turn it to her advantage (small though it may be). Of course, this review could never be complete without a word for Scouvrel – the Knave of Courts, Allie’s captor, and just as enigmatic, tricky, cruel, and endearing as any Fae could ever hope to be. His name fits him so well, and he really grew on me as we went through with his double-meanings and not saying as much (or more) than what he means. He is proving himself to be quite layered (though the usual term would be tangled…there was a plethora of the words tangled and twisted being woven into the story, admittedly sometimes almost too much) – we knew he wasn’t what he seemed, but what Allie sees in him and doesn’t realize what it means is plain enough to readers, and had me enjoying every turn of his sentences to see what he left unsaid. He may not be able to lie, but that doesn’t mean he can’t select which truths to tell and which to keep hidden from those (Allie) not able to spot them (yet). He’s crafty and devious by turns, caring and misguidedly thoughtful by others, and all around so much fun to bargain with. Well, when you’re the one witnessing the bargains, not necessarily the one on the other side of them, at least… I’ve probably gone on enough by now – so in short, I am very happy I went ahead and read Fae Captive, as it really filled expectations and set bars higher than Fae Hunter. It was an immensely fun jaunt filled with the magic and glamor of Faewald and the tangled trickery of its inhabitants and visitors, and yes, I am definitely as ensnared as Allie now and can hardly wait to go back in to see how things will continue to play out. Care to join me for a dance in the stone circle?
I received a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This has not affected my opinion/review.
This is my honest review after reading a requested ARC copy of Fae Captive.
Sarah has done it again in this second book of the Tangled Fae series, writing a wonderfully descriptive tale of magic and a version of the Fae that exceeds those who have come before her. Rich world building in the fae world lends to the tale of Allie Hunter and her time trapped in the fae world alongside Scouvrel (the twisted, tempting fae scoundrel) and her desire to save her father from her twisted twin sister and the terrible oak tree he's bound to. This is not my usual style of reading if I'm honest, but I'm glad that I started the series and am looking forward to reading the rest and seeing where Sarah takes Allie in her quest to rid the human world of the terrible threat of the fae. High praise for Sarah K.L. Wilson
mind. blowningly. awesome. such a short read but so much is going on. also - is better than Book 1/previous book. things are getting better! I can never get tired of Wilson's writing. Now I'm even more convinced. Also - the narrator for the audiobook, Caitlin Kelly, is SUCH a queen at all the voices. I love listening to it 100%.
There were so many twists and turns in this thrilling story. Nothing is what it seems in the Faewald. I don't know what else to say without leaving spoilers, but I'm eager to read the next book!
I received a free advanced copy of this book, but my opinions are my own.
The tables have turned, Allie is now captured in the cage she held Scouvrel in and is a pawn for his games.
Capture is the worst kind of torture. All things long to be free.
Time is different in the faerie world and her sister has changed considerably, or has she?
Lots of deals, bargains for kisses, and trickery abound in this one. Can’t wait to read the next one.
“Don’t you think you should look a bit more manly?” I frowned. “That’s a lot of lace I’m seeing.” His eyes narrowed. “Manly? I suppose I could arrive naked, adorned in nothing but the blood of my foes, but I prefer something with a collar.”
This book has so many twists and turns you don't know what's coming next. Edge of your seat read....Freaking loved it and I can't wait to read the next book!
I think I loved this one better than the first one! First of all, can I just say KUDOS on the dark unicorn, man, that was twisted! I loved it! Secondly, I want to know where I can get my very own Scourvrel (sp?)? He's adorable and I'd love to torture him, then cuddle him. (I know, I need therapy!)
Congratulations Sarah, on a wonderful new release! I can't wait to read more!
I've been gobbling these up like there's no tomorrow. Seriously, this is a problem. I don't have that much money. But honestly, it's worth it because these are extremely entertaining and almost everything I love in a book. I'm surprised I'm only now learning of Sarah K. L. Wilson, but I now have about three or four series to catch up on from her. Okay so this picks up where the first one leaves off and things are building a bit. And it wonderful, but there are two things in particular that I want to talk about: 1.) You know those characters who are simply awful and you kind of hate them, but they're charming and you kind of love them too? Scouvrel is like that, but then the author had to make it worse and give us glimpses of past pain and loss and a smidge of genuineness and now there's pity too. Rude 2.) No context, but I definitely saw what happened when it did. I did not, however, see how that would affect the ending and now I'm sad. Anyway, this is a fantastic story and the series is very easy to get pulled into. Go for it
Often a 2nd book in a series is a bit of a letdown as it's a bridge between the 1st and 3rd book. That isn't the case with this book. Yes, you really should read the first book before starting this one.
Filled with twists, turns, and interesting plot surprises, Allie Hunter continues her adventures.
The dialogue and world setting are done well, and the story keeps you wanting to read.
I read an ARC of this book and have chosen to review it.
This is a fantastic continuation from the first book of Allies journey into the world of the Fae. A great storyline and characters who continue to grow and develop, twists and turns, surprises , introducing new characters, this really had me hooked so much so I did not want it to end! Can’t wait to read the next book!
A very gripping read right from the start. It has me on the edge of my seat. The Author does an Fantastic job at bringing the story to fruition and capturing the characters. I could not put this read down. There are twists and turns around every corner. I definitely recommend. Shauna Joesten
I really love this series!! It might be too dark for some but I'm fed up with those mighty bright fairy tale stories. The Fae here are twisted monsters of nightmares, adequately described with Allie's second sight, they're only projecting glamour to get mortals trapped... And tortured... Stealing children to become like themselves, living an immortal twisted Fae life. Even Hulanna, Allie's twin sister, has become an evil lady of the Fae, probably the worst of all. And Scouvrel? I feel so bad for loving him. He's the biggest trickster and mystery but I just can't or want to give up on him!
If you like Fae stories, you will love this. The second book in what in my humble opinion, is a first class fantasy read. This is no less than we have come to from the pen of Sarah. Loved it so much.
Book two in the series and it’s getting better and better with every one. His cannot fail, she hits the mark with every new series she writes. Each book leaves you desperate to read the next, they are that good. What is she going to come up with next I wonder. Highly recommended.
Although this was a short installment (my edition is under 200, which irks me) I really enjoyed it. The author really went into trying to capture the actual nature of faeries; the tricks, the bargaining, the illusions, the wickedness, the inhumanity, the games. There's way too many books about ""fae"" who completely ignore practically everything that makes faeries what they are.
Pointy ears and wings do not a faerie make, I'm afraid.
I enjoy Allie, she's snarky and cunning, and I like her banter with Scouvrel a lot. He's exactly what a fae should be. Their relationship so far is enjoyable.
I'm interested in seeing where the plot goes, as there's three more installments. I imagine there's a bit of war and magic and lots of failure to be had.
*SCREAMS* Why did I wait so long to read this book? Gah, it was so good. And the author even put the main character in a cage for most of the story.
In this book, we got to see more of the Faewald, and is both fascinating and utterly terrifying. The main character even describes it as being hellish whenever she saw it as it really was.
I wasn't sure about the romance between Allie and Scourvel. One minute I am rooting for the both of them and then the next? Well, the next Scourvel is trying to sell Allie to the highest bidder. I was a little confused about why he wanted to sell her as he obviously didn't want her in the hands of certain faeries. But then again, that's Scourvel for you. I still love him, even though he is so Fae.
However, the places that Scourvel takes Allie to were so cool. Like the nest and all the carvings that Scourvel had drawn there. And then the statue. *Sigh* I love those places.
And boy, Allie's sister is so evil. Like super evil. She could put shivers up my spine.
Also, I love the orc faeries. They were a nice addition to the overall story.
Content in Book
1. Passionate kisses. An unsettling desire that the Fae have with humans, lust. Seductive.
2. Violence. (Hunting animals for food. Beating people up. Hand-to-hand combat. Sword combat. War. Trying to drown someone in wine. Having someone cut off your ear in payment for something, then using that dismembered ear to paint a picture with the blood. Killing people then dismembering their remains to remove them. Shooting people with a bow. Nailing people onto a tree. Violence from an unicorn. Etc.)
3. Kidnapping children.
4. Magic.
5. Tattoos that represent the magic.
Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:
Those who want a good book about evil Fae. Good versus evil theme. READ IT, IT'S MY FAVORITE!
Loved this series. Narrator was amazing and the characters were so unique. An interesting way to think about fairies rather than the norm. Kept me entertained
Fae Captive is the second book in the brand new Tangled Fae series by Sarah K.L. Wilson. The story starts off with a bang and doesn’t slow down. There are heart-pounding twists and turns with gruesome scenes and plenty of action. The chemistry between Allie and Scouvrel is intense. Just a kiss can make Allie’s world shift and change her made-up mind. But out of the two, who will have the upper hand? This book ends at a good stopping point, but it will leave you breathless for more! If you like fantasy and adventure with some romance, then you'll enjoy Sarah's books. She writes YA, but I would place her latest series at Upper YA.
I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
