I’m Cat McKay, and I’m in desperate need of a man.
My farm manager deserted me six weeks before our grand opening that will help put my family’s business on the map. Now I need to find a replacement, because I’m not about to be the reason we fail. Unfortunately, Caden Landry— whose arrogance, evasions and good looks rub me the wrong way—is my only option on a list of zero candidates.
So, as much as it pains me to admit it, I need him to step in and save the day. Yeah, I hate it too.
I’m Caden Landry, and I have a self-destructive streak a mile wide.
One thing is clear, I need to stay the hell away from my new boss, Cat McKay. Not an easy task, considering she’s the kind of woman I find irresistible. But I’m tired of running, tired of living paycheck to paycheck with nothing but a flatbed to my name. I’m determined this time I’m going to get my life together.
So, I’m not about to screw a golden opportunity because I can’t keep my hands off the woman in charge. This time, self-preservation will prevail.
*second book in the Bastards series, each book is a standalone and has its own HEA.
Jennifer Dawson is the author of the popular Something New series, spicy, small town romance released with Kensington, and pens the dark and edgy contemporary romance series Undone.
Jennifer Dawson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from DePaul University with a degree in psychology. She met her husband at the public library while they were studying. To this day she still maintains she was NOT checking him out. Now, over twenty years later, they’re married and living in a suburb right outside of Chicago with two awesome kids and a crazy dog.
Despite going through a light FM, poem writing phase in high school, Jennifer never grew up wanting to be a writer (she had more practical aspirations of being an international super spy). Then one day, suffering from boredom and disgruntled with a book she’d been reading, she decided to put pen to paper. The rest, as they say, is history.
These days Jennifer can be found sitting behind her computer, writing her next novel, chasing after her kids, keeping an ever watchful eye on her ever growing to-do list, and NOT checking out her husband. We return to the Mckay family and farm & distillery, with book two of the Bastard’s series giving us Cat’s story, short a farm manager and already running at full steam with her own responsibilities hiring Arrogant Bastard; Caden Landry to do the job is more for necessity of the situation, than because she wants to work with him.
The man is dangerous… He makes me stupid. And reckless…
Chemistry oozes between them from the get-go, but working and sleeping together is a big no-no for Caden, doesn’t stop him from wanting it though, and Cat’s prickly demeanour and open dislike for him makes her even more tempting in his eyes, and its not long before all bets are off, but secrets and lies always have a habit of catching up with you in the end...
He’s the only thing in too many years to count to make me wild…
Easy reading, with a huge side of sexy, and low level drama. Dirty talking Caden ticked most of my boxes, but I found some of what came out of his mouth when they were doing the naked tango a little on the cheesy/cringey side, still a really enjoyable read in general though, and I am looking forward to the next book Relentless Bastard, due for release later on this year, the author gave a few indications as to who would be the main players in this one and I am intrigued!
ARC generously provided by the author via Netgalley, in exchange for the above honest review.
I am legit obsessed with whatever Jennifer Dawson writes. Her stories are always sexy and full of the amazing banter that I die for. For that reason I could not wait to read Cat's book after reading about Jackson and Gwen in the first book of this series!
I seriously adored this story. The chemistry between Cat and Caden was FLAMING HOT!! That man and his dirty mouth was on another level. But what I loved more than anything was how vulnerable both characters were. Caden was a man running from his past and Cat was a woman trying to find her own path. Separately they were lost but together, they made each other want to be better. I loved seeing them together and never wanted the story to end! 4 stars! ~Ratula
Caden and Cat had chemistry and sparks, but boy did she not know what she wanted in any area. Caden was very secretive and then guess what a visitor from his past shows up. It was nice seeing Gwen and Jackson again plus their new restaurant. Next up is brother Wyatt and I'm guessing he'll be hooking up with one of Gwen's sisters with all the sparks that were flying.
This book oozed sexual chemistry from the first page. Not to mention the sexual tension, for a moment I thought my phone would overheat from the scorching chemistry between Cat and Caden.
Having recently lost her farm manager, Cat was pushed to hire Caden to be the new farm manager. The hiring was borne from a necessity rather than a desire as Cat didn’t want to work with him, but what choice did she have and besides he came highly recommended
A man with a mysterious past, Caden proved to be a complex character. I had an interesting time peeling away his layers and learning what made him tick. I have to admit it took me sometime to warm up to him mostly due to his arrogance, but as the story progressed my initial perception changed. In the end, he proved to be no different from Cat. They both wanted to be loved and accepted for themselves. They both feared getting close to anyone for fear of losing them.
I found Cat’s character easy to relate to. She puts everyone’s needs above hers without a complaint. Her fears as it relates to getting involved with Caden leapt off the pages. Those fears were understandable, especially knowing he had secrets, which he has yet to reveal.
It was fun revisiting with the characters from the previous book. Seeing how their lives have developed was a treat. Once again, I had fun with the secondary characters and I am eager to learn whose story will be next.
This story was a stark reminder that no matter how hard you try to outrun your past, it will eventually catch up to you. A fact Caden will learn.
Conclusion/Recommendation Overall, Arrogant Bastard proved to be an entertaining romantic and sexy story and one I would recommend.
It's hard for me to like a book where the hero calls the heroine a slut and more than once. Even in the throws of passion and even if he is a bit dominant I don't find that sexy at all. So that right there was a strike...
This book started off good. I liked the initial chemistry between Caden and Cat and the fact that they were fighting their attraction since she was his boss. I even liked the dominant side of Caden and his need to want her to give in and be vulnerable with him instead of wanting him to just take her.
But then the tone of the book shifted....he no longer acted like the dominant, self-assured man he initially seemed to be and Cat was so hot and cold with what she wanted. The story just dragged and I didn't find myself really understanding or liking the characters much. It just wasn't the book for me.
Cat and Caden don't want to get involved with each other, but the fiery chemistry between them means that avoiding each other just isn't going to happen. Caden is the new farm manager, but he won't tell boss Cat anything about his past, it's clear that he's brilliant at his job and being desperate, she employs him anyway. I enjoyed the chemistry between Cat and Caden and their attempts, at least to begin with, to avoid it. It was clear that they were going to be unable to resist one another, but I enjoyed the push and pull before that. Caden clearly has a past and it is this that makes him unwilling to get into something with Cat. There's a lot of game playing from both the hero and the heroine and at points that was a little bit annoying. They both have specific things that they expect from the other but aren't willing to actually explain what it is that they are waiting for. Where I wasn't completely convinced with this one, was when Caden's past was revealed. Although it went some way to explaining why he was reluctant to get involved with Cat it didn't really seem to fit his character. Everything that we had learnt about him up to that point seems very much at odds with what supposed to have happened at his previous job. It didn't ruin the story or anything like that, but it did seem a bit strange. Other than that, this was an enjoyable romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Okay first half of the book, I didn't really enjoy it. The whole 'I'm a bastard' 'you're a bastard' always seems over the top to me it's not common for bastards to constantly think to themselves that they are. However, I got sucked it and ended up loving the book the characters grew up a bit and actually worked on themselves and the romance had more layers to it.
Thank you to Netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Eh, not my favourite as well. And I was really hoping I'd like this more than I liked the first book.
Like I appreciate the sexual tension between the characters, but I also feel like there's something missing to the story? It didn't capture my full attention (which is why it took so long for me to finish this; I started immediately when I got the ARC but didn't finish until this morning) and I found myself just skimming through, wanting the book to end.
But truly intrigued with the whole situation between Wyatt and Hope. Definitely looking forward to that book (and I hope there is one!)
Cat and Caden fought in my mind to take top spot in my list of favorite couples written by Jennifer Dawson. I believe they're tied with Michael and Layla from Crave.
I loved how Cat and Caden pushed each other's buttons and made each other better. Of course, the sex scenes were very steamy. Reading this book has put a big dent in my reading funk I've been in.
I love a dominant hero and initially, I was in love with the plot but the story just dragged and I didn't find myself really understanding or liking the characters much. I quickly grew tired of Cat's mixed messages, it was frustrating and annoying. This was not for me. I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was looking forward to this book as I really enjoyed the first one. I was a little disappointed, I liked Cat a lot in the previous novel, she continues to be interesting and likeable. Caden though he never quite grew on me.
I loved this book - until I didn't. It was super sexy and I adored Cat's spark and Caden's intensity. But the last third of the book made me angry and frustrated. It might just be me tho! I really dislike conflict between the leads where one person takes all the blame, where the blame is really shared. Particularly, when one party never owns up to their own actions.
Cat plays a major role in her family's business, but doesn't feel like she is important or that the business is her passion. She is so busy that she doesn't really take time to evaluate whether what she is doing is what she wants - it is just what is needed. And she is damn good at getting things done.
Caden is smart and passionate about growing things - what he isn't great at is facing emotional problems and issues head on. He shows up when Cat and her family are desperately in need of a farm manager after their's quit right before the launch of their new venue. Caden has all the experience they need - but doesn't want to share any of his past. He just wants a fresh start no questions asked.
He and Cat spark big time - but both of them try to resist it. Cat, in particular, pushes herself to leave the attraction behind. But that fails miserably and the two get closer and closer. Caden recognizes that Cat needs someone to put her first - but he also gives us a true testimony in consent and respecting Cat's wishes. Cat continually tells Caden no. And he listens. Any interactions they have are really led by her approaching him. The problem is, Cat feels like because he is respects her wishes that he doesn't really want her. This is where things started to go not so great for me.
Cat really plays games - I am not even sure she or the author were aware of it. She says no - but she really means, fight for me. She says I don't want you, but really means I want you to want me more than I want you. What really really bugged me though was
Overall - I loved so much about it - but the ending ruined it for me.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
In December of last year I read the first book in the Bastard series ‘Cold Hearted Bastard’. I loved that book so much! So when I got the opportunity to read this next book, I got really excited and couldn’t wait to start reading.
From the moment I started reading ‘Arrogant Bastard’, I was hooked. Just as with the first book, I just loved the main characters and the setting. After meeting the older brother in the first book, we now get to read the story of Cat McKay. The youngest McKay sibling who is used to people disappointing her. When she meets the handsome Caden, she isn’t impressed by his looks but instantly dislikes him. Not because he is so unkind.. but simple because he is just so arrogant and pushes all her buttons. And.. because the chemistry between them simple can’t be denied.
I loved Cat when I first read about her in ‘Cold Hearted Bastard’, and I loved her even more in this book. Her character was one I could easily relate too. She just felt so real. She has learned the hard way, that people can leave without any notice.. and that’s why she shields herself from feeling to much. And who doesn’t get that? I sure do. I understood her reluctance to let Caden in. But I also kept hoping she would allow herself some happiness.
Caden character I didn’t like in the beginning at all. He is the kind of guy I would walk a mile around to be honest. He is so damn arrogant, and although I could easily feel their chemistry flying of the pages.. It took me while to really like Caden. But slowly on we get to see another side of Caden. And I must say I loved that side of him.
The romance between Cat and Caden was definitely very nice to read about. Their chemistry is intense and I loved how they both tried to deny their feelings. Their little banters where super fun to read and I simple enjoyed getting to know them better.
And above all I loved how we get to read a little bit about Jackson and Gwen, the McKay brother we read about in the first book. And I also got really curious about the last McKay brother Wyatt.
‘Arrogant Bastard’ was a very nice, sexy, romantic read I just read in a day. Simple because it was too good to stop.
I should have known better than to think I could read just a little of Jennifer Dawson's newest book. I mean, I've read all her other stuff and none of them have been easy to put down. Why did I think this would be any different? What's a little lost sleep anyway?
I loved this book because while it follows the same theme that works so well for Jennifer - strong alpha man butting heads with an equally strong stubborn heroine - she also put a twist into her main characters. Cat is strong and has been holding herself together through sheer stubbornness. But she's been faking it to everyone, including her brothers. Out of all of Jennifer's heroines she feels the most vulnerable to me, with her confidence and sense of self worn away by abandonment, her dreams subsumed and marginalised by her brothers' passions. In their drive to rescue the family homestead, her brothers have overlooked Cat and it takes Caden to notice it.
Caden, on the other hand, begins like your typical macho asshole but very quickly his point of view chapters reveal that while, yes, he can be a bastard, he's actually quite a restrained one. In fact, despite his own description of himself as self-destructive, he's actually quite thoughtful throughout the book and the burden of blame for who takes the steps toward the ill-advised relationship between Cat and Caden can be shared equally between them. Moreso than Jackson was in his own book, Caden manages to have excellent insight into Cat's mind and the 11th hour crisis that drives the two apart is not entirely of his own making, and he goes about fixing it with gusto and great commitment and courage. He was not clueless like Jackson was about how to fix the problem.
Like the rest of Jennifer's stories. this is character driven and well focused. The tension through the book just keeps you turning pages, wanting to know in exactly what spectacular fashion the attraction between the two will blow up. Another great success for me and I look forward to Wyatt and Hope's story which is teased here! What kind of bastard will Jennifer make out of Wyatt and how will he and the workaholic Hope clash and spark?
Caden Landry, who is giving her little to no information just keeps telling her that he is the right person for the job and that do you think that her brother would really send her someone that could not do the job? Frustrated beyond belief because of the opening coming up she hires him knowing she can fire him after. Caden wants this job so much and he also knows that he has a history of blowing up every job that he has ever had. He just hopes this one will be the one that he can hang onto. His biggest problem is not the production of the crops, no it is Cat herself. He was taken in by her from the first time he saw her and he has never had that type of attraction before. Now that he wants her how does he talk to her without making a pass at her? Cat is under pressure as well. She has always been there for her two brothers and she feels that she is taken for granted and she is probably right. She also does not see her value and this is what Caden helps her with, just one of many things actually. The story really takes a turn when you get past the halfway mark and just when you think everything is going well, the past Caden’s past comes to the farm and starts to blow up everything between him and Cat and then her brothers. How can he fix it? If he does will, she still be there for him? Read this wonderful story to find out. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. New author to me, but loved her writing style. Strong woman who comes into her own! Loved this story!! It was also interesting that my favorite parts had nothing to do with Caden and were where Cat started to shine and flourish!
"I want to be happy more than I want to be right." Good motto for life!
Cat takes an instant dislike to Caden, but she is in desperate need of a farm manager and he checks all of those boxes. To add to her disdain - her brothers take an instant liking to him and he is very confident in his work and what he brings to the table.
It was an interesting set of dynamics as one brother runs the distillery business and one brother is opening up a new restaurant on the property, yet Cat feels like she is second fiddle to both their operations. She's discontent and Caden just helps that grow...or helps her see the light.
They are explosive together, but it was a slow burn at first which was an interesting dynamic as well. We get glimpses of Caden "running" from his past, so there is bound to be issues afoot.
Seeing Cat come into her own woman was a glorious sight to behold and it was thanks in no small part to Caden. I absolutely loved these two together. Even when things got rocky - you were pulling for them to make it.
While this is my first read of hers - it won't be my last. Book 1 is already in my hands and I can't wait for Book 3 to see the last sibling fall!!
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
SIZZLING! This love story burns right off the pages.
I have been a Jennifer Dawson fan from way back. I see her name on the cover of a book and I buy. I don’t have to read what it’s about. Doesn’t matter. I just know it is going to be good. Arrogant Bastard, the second in her Bastard series, is not just good. It’s spectacular!
The heat from the main characters, Cat McKay and Caden Landry, spark from their first meeting. She is running her family ranch with her two brothers; he is running from his past. Both are lost. Both are desperate. Little do they realize that they are really running toward each other.
Arrogant Bastard is the continuation of the family storyline started in the previous book, but you do need to have read that to understand what is happening. Familiar characters are reintroduced as Cat and Caden learn to trust each other and themselves and fall in love.
I highly recommend this book. Buy it! You will not be disappointed! I certainly wasn’t. I was provided an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review which appears here. I ended up buying it to add to my collection too. What can I say? I am a Jennifer Dawson groupie.
This is the second book in the Bastard Series. This Series is interconnected with the Undone Series, and has intertwined characters. Arrogant Bastard is an enemies-to-lovers, and slow burn romance. You can read it as a standalone, but I recommend you to read the first book in the Series, Cold Hearted Bastard, Jackson and Gwen's story. I loved it! Cat and Caden's story is well written, sweet, fun, sexy, complex, and intriguing. The characters are well developed. Caden is handsome, arrogant, sexy, dominant, commanding, demanding, secretive, and intriguing. He is such a complex and intense character! Cat is a lovely character. She is smart, independent, and caring. They share an instant attraction, and an undeniable and sizzling hot chemistry. Their relationship is complicated, but they are perfect together. The storyline is intriguing, filled with secrets, and twists and turns. I liked to have dual POV. I love the family bonds in this Series. The supporting characters are great, and they have an important part in this story. The ending is beautiful, romantic, sexy, and perfect. I need more! Looking forward to read the next book in the Series.
I'm a new fan of Jennifer Dawson's work, having fallen head over heals for her Crave series. I thoroughly enjoyed the Bastard series' first book and immediately pre-ordered this second installment.
Dawson did not disappoint! I felt as frustrated as Cat while reading this book, but only because I was dying for them to get their shit together!
There's a saying, "The longer the waiting, the sweeter the kiss". This is 100% true when it comes to Caden and Cat, and I devoured the slow burn of their relationship from the first page to the last.
Now, all that's left is for me to order the paperback, and re-read from the first installment to the end of this one, simply because I love these books and the amazing and uniquely deep storyteller that is Jennifer Dawson. Her stories reach deep inside and twist my emotions in such a satisfying way, that even while I'm frustrated or irritated or cursing plot twists, I'm loving every dramatic moment.
So I have never read anything by Jennifer Dawson before. And can I just say… phew! What a way to write a book. Cat and Caden are absolutely combustible together. Two incredibly strong characters are brought together and they have so much chemistry it’s a miracle that things did not go boom around them.
I loved the way a completely strong female MC still manages to get just soft enough with what could only be her one true (insert sappy 4 letter word here). She is stubborn and righteous and so completely over her interfering brother but still does what needs to be done.
Caden is a little annoying but then what arrogant bastard isn’t right? At least he has the bonus of a mysterious history and UBER good looks going for me. Plus chemistry. Have I mentioned the chemistry? The pull of two huge ass magnets that just cannot stay away from each other.
If anything about the book didn’t work for me – its maybe a bit how there are a lot of similarities between this one and the Cold Hearted Bastard. But it was a great read that I would eagerly recommend to one and all.
Cat has been working in the family business for years helping make her brothers' dreams come true ... but not her own. When she hires Caden as the farm manager, he makes her want more for herself. Caden wants to put down roots ... he's tired of moving around, but will the secrets of his past come back to haunt him? Will he run at the first sign of trouble ... like usual?
Caden and Cat had chemistry right from the start, but it kinda pissed me off the way she would always tell him "no" even though she really wanted him. After all the rejection, I can't believe that he kept coming back for more ... most guys wouldn't. I liked that we saw some of Jackson and Gwen from the first book and I'm sure the third book will be about the oldest brother Wyatt and and Gwen's sister Hope. This book was a great addition to the series.
I received an early copy courtesy of Victory Editing NetGalley Coop through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cat is the only girl in the sibling trio and as such I think has taken on the role of caregiver and forgot to take care of herself as well. Now she is realizing that she has been the supporter to her brother's dreams while she feels insignificant in their joint venture. It's hard to think about what she truly wants with the distillery and restaurant and the fact that her farm manager just walked out.
Caden takes the open position and knows he is good; therefore, he is very arrogant. Caden comes across as sexy, sweet and respectful- until he wasn't- which was the sexy parts! LOL!
These two are like magnets drawn to one another and neither want to be. Caden is trying to atone for his past and Cat needs to put the farm first. Their fighting of their attraction plays out fun and hilarious and then downright HOT!
These two were good for each other. Through the angst they finally find one another and their dreams!
My Review:I received a complimentary copy of this book from Caffeinated PR. The following is my honest review and opinion. I found that while reading the previous book, that I really loved the family dynamics in this series and was excited to continue with this book. I ended up finding this book very difficult to read, not because of the writing or anything wrong with it but I connected with and felt Cat on a very deep level. It was almost soul bearing and painful. While I was only able to take this book in small doses because of that, it was still a great book! It is amazing when you can find a character that you connect with so completely. To watch Cat fight through and come out the other side all the better for the battle, it gives me hope. In addition, the chemistry between Caden and Cat was off the charts! Good gordy, the steam coming off the pages of this book! I really enjoyed this journey and look forward to getting more of the McKay family in the future!
This story is fraught with tension and heat right from page 1. Both Cat and Caden have lost their way to their life goals. Cat works with her family in their farm-to-table business but what she does leaves her unfulfilled. Caden loves the art of cultivation but is worried his past mistakes and self-destructive streak will ruin his chance to work with the McKay family. While I liked both characters and could certainly understand their turmoil, I eventually got tired of Cat’s mixed messages to Caden. Cat’s saying of “No, don’t” but really it was “Just take me” got frustrating for me. Then she would get upset when Caden wouldn’t act on the attraction. Kudos to Caden for respecting Cat’s verbal wishes despite the sizzling attraction between the two of them. Thank goodness Cat’s talk with her Uncle Beau made her realize a change in her attitude was needed. Overall, an enjoyable, steamy read.
I received a free copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
The Arrogant Bastard by Jennifer Dawson a feisty four-star read. This is number two in the series, but they can be read as stand-alone, I didn’t feel lost at all when reading this one, but I can guess who the first novel was about. I honestly don’t know if I would go out of my way to read the first one, but I may pick it up at some point, as I like the writing its just not what I am feeling at the moment. It has great ideas and plot lines, but I feel like I read so many similar stories a couple of months ago that I got bogged down, I should have read the description and cover closer so I hold my hands up to that. It had some lovely characters in the family and even some of the visitors, and I enjoyed one visitor in particular as it added something extra to the story. Overall I enjoyed getting to know Caden and Cat.
This is Cat’s story, the second McKay family member, and it is every bit as good as Jackson’s was. Cat and Caden are explosive together and the sex is off the charts but he has secrets and she is unhappy but doesn’t know why. I thought at first it was a little slow, but that was really a reflection of their relationship and as problems evolved and Cat and Cade’s relationship deepened it all imploded. Watching Cat and Caden find both themselves and each other was amazing but it wasn’t all smooth saving and I found myself with tears in my eyes several times. An excellent second book in the series and now Wyatt’s book?
Arrogant Bastard is the second book in Jennifer Dawson’s Bastards series, and I was really looking forward to Cat’s story after meeting her character in book one. And Cat didn’t disappoint. She’s a feisty, determined and resilient young woman, with the pressures of preparing the family business foremost in her priorities. The story started a little slow, but eventually it did pick up pace. Unfortunately, that didn’t help my opinion of Caden, as I never quite took to his character, and I found the constant declarations of “I’m a bastard” or “you’re a bastard” exceedingly overdone. I’m still looking forward to the next in the series, and this is only my opinion of this book.
I received a free copy of Arrogant Bastard in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved this book. Caden was probably one of the best characters I've met in my reading endeavors. He was full of attitude, and he just kept dishing it out to Cat. Cat was just as fun and snarky too. The dialogue between the two made for some great reading with a ton of innuendos, and lots of give and take bantering. It made for some great reading, and lots of character development.
If you are easily offended, or you prefer characters above reproach this might not be a good reading choice.
The heroine was so so so annoying OMG ! At one point I wanted to stop reading it, but since I was already at 50% i finished it . I gave it 3 stars but I am thinking now it is maybe too much because of the heroine, she really pissed me off with her behaviour and just her way of being !!! The story was kinda “meh” honestly .....Also it was like the hero Calden changed as the story progressed... ( from a dominant and a strong man to someone totally different, kinda weak ?) And seriously Cat how many times does Calden needs to say he’s sorry in order for you to forgive him ? You didn’t deserve Calden at all !!!
