I really like the Maisy books! I used the Spanish version of Count With Maisy, Cuenta Con Maisy, as a participation story for a Spanish and bilingual story time program about ladybugs. The first page, which features the number one, has a ladybug on it, so it worked really well with my theme.

Count with Maisy is a very simple book but also very good for children to read. Children usually learn to count before they learn how to read so being able to count each object on the page plus putting the word next to it is connecting counting and reading.

Title: italicize Count With Maisy
Author: Lucy Cousins
Illustrator:
Genre: Counting Book
Theme(s): Counting
Opening line/sentence: One ladybug
Brief Book Summary: This book is in the Maisy mouse series and is a counting book that covers the numbers one through ten. It uses common items and tools that young children often use to teach young children how to count basic numbers.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Children's Literature - Lynelle Lawrence
Maisy that lovable little mouse is back in this brightly colored board-book that introduces the basics of counting from 1 to 10. Generously oversized pages and bright white backgrounds make Cousins' playful artwork pop, helping children easily identify the counting objects that Maisy encounters: one ladybug, two flowers, three buckles, four colors, five pencils, six fish, seven steps, eight ducks, nine leaves and ten fleas! With simple text, joyful illustrations and a final spread recapping the numbers, with rows of flowers grouped in order from 1 through 10, this book is sure to have preschoolers counting everything in sight faster than you can say, one, two, three!
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Children's Literature - Trina Heidt
Children will enjoy counting with Maisy as she plays. They will need to be able to identify the named objects and then count them. Cousins' simple text and illustrations will appeal to the very young. Other Maisy books include: Maisy Goes to School, Maisy goes to the Playground, Maisy's ABC, Maisy's Colors and Maisy's Pop-up Playhouse.
Response to Two Professional Reviews: Both reviews mentioned simple text and illustrations. They both also mentioned that it a counting book that does a good job grouping illustrations for students to count to learn the numbers. It’s a brightly colored board-book that have oversized pages and bright white backgrounds which makes the artwork pop out and easy for young children to read and see.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: Board book, allowing young students to easily hold and use it with out destroying the pages. Counting and learning the basis numbers 1-10, also learning basis concept words and object, ex. Flowers fish. There are vibrant illustrations that make the object and numbers pop on the page. It also allows the young children to count the objects on the page. The back cover has a interactive section with flowers that the children can count in groups 1-10.
Consideration of Instructional Application: During read out louds students can name the object and animals that are being counted and help count them throughout the page. The students can also use this book as a concept book and learning new words and animals. They can be given a worksheet and be asked to count the animals and object and then write their names to bring writing into the lesson.

I really liked this counting book. What made it a little different was that most of the items to count were a little more subtle, such as steps on a ladder or buckles on Maisy's clothes. This makes the pictures a little more interesting and a good counting books for older kids. Books that show just the number of objects and the number are probably pretty boring for preschoolers.

Title : Count With Maisy
Author: Lucy Cousins
Illustrator (if separate from author):
Genre: Counting Book
Theme(s): Counting, Play, Discovery
Opening line/sentence (type directly from text): “1 One Ladybug”

Brief Book Summary: In bright pictures, the mouse explores a play materials and the outside world. On each page the mouse counts to a new number, as seen in the pictures. The mouse counts from one to ten.

Professional Recommendation/Review #1
“Maisy the mouse is back to make counting even more exciting and learnable! The fun, vibrant colors help to capture children’s attention and introduce them to the world of numbers. As they discover the numbers 1 to 10, they will also meet what Maisy encounters: one ladybug, two flowers, three buckles, four colors, five pencils, six fish, seven steps, eight ducks, nine leaves, and ten fleas. Now they can learn faster when they reinforce what they have read with the sturdy, kid-friendly blocks. Each brightly-colored block entertains two bold numbers, appealing illustrations, and a puzzle of Maisy counting. Infants and preschoolers will enjoy building their confidence through learning numbers and how to count!”- Ashleigh Vanada (Children’s Lit) (http://www.clcd.com/#/bookdetail/1/1/...)

Professional Recommendation/Review #2:
“Bold, bright illustrations will make this board book a favorite of your toddler. Maisy (a mouse) is depicted in different everyday activities that involve counting one ladybug to ten fleas. The last two pages show ten sets of flowers.”- A. Braga (Parent Council Vol. 5) (http://www.clcd.com/#/bookdetail/1/1/...)

Response to Two Professional Reviews:
I completely agree with these reviews. They both discuss the bright colors, and fun images that are shown throughout the book. I agree that these pictures would catch the eye of a young reader and be enjoyable to count through.

Evaluation of Literary Elements:
As discussed in Molly Bang’s book, the angles and shapes would really catch the eye of readers. The mouse is made of clear distinct lines and shapes. Additionally, the all white background helps the images to really pop off the page. By having the numerical sign of each number, and the spelled out word, as well as the representation of that number in a common theme, it helps to reinforce numbers and counting.

Consideration of Instructional Application:
During reader's workshop, students could work to count out each object on each page. Additionally, there could be cut outs of each object discussed in the book (flowers, ladybugs, pencils, etc.). The students could then count out the needed number and put them on the page. This would help to extend learning off of the book and into a manipulative.
