Bachelors and Babies #9

Kendrick: Too Old for Babies

Rate this book
In late 1852, when Kendrick Denham reached Columbia, known as “The Gem of the Southern Mines,” he realized the easy-to-find placer gold was no longer that easy to find. He decided he would do better providing fresh meat to the townspeople. With extremely few women in the region, and most of the respectable ones already married, Kendrick entertains no ambitions for a wife and family. Then in 1854, the county sheriff rides over from Sonora. With a cryptic expression, he hands Kendrick a six-month-old baby girl. “The mother named you as the father.”

Now her late husband’s stepson is of age to inherit the farm left to him by his birth father, Lydia Meyer and her two young sons have been forced out of her home of over ten years. She leaves Pennsylvania headed for the wild gold fields of Columbia, California. She dreads living off the charity of her older sister who is just as disagreeable and overbearing as their late mother had been. Warned that most of the miners in California, many of whom left families back east to seek their fortunes, tend to be unsettled, uncouth, and prone to drinking and gambling, she worries it may be impossible to find a good father for her children. Even if she weds again, will it be another loveless marriage like her first?

Then there is baby Madeline, who is cast adrift in the world, all alone, with no one to love her. What will become of her?

KENDRICK is a stand-alone sweet American historical romance that is part of the multi-author series, Bachelors & Babies. Under the sub-title, “Too Old for Babies,” it is also part of the author’s own series, Too Old in Columbia.

Columbia, California 1854
Life had settled down and Kendrick Denham was making a living running his butcher shop in town. After he gave up searching for gold he figured it would work. What he didn't expect was for the sheriff in the nearby town to bring him a baby and say the mother named him as the father! What? There was no way it could be his, but when he read the letter attached to little Madeline, he understood.
Lydia Meyer and her two young sons had no options after her husband died but to go to Columbia to live with her sister Dorcas (and what a piece of work she is!) and her children. They live right behind Kendrick's butcher shop and home and he tries his best to stay out of the way of Lydia's sister. But Dorcas's twin daughters are the best!!
When Lydia arrives, she ends up helping Kendrick and it seems just what she needs to focus on. I really want to tell you everything about this story which truly is wonderful and heartwarming! Humor, a little mystery, adorable twins, a sweet little baby, adorable twins and a really amazing man and kindhearted woman make this one of the best sweet books I have read.
Zina Abbott uses her knowledge and research to bring this time period alive and I learned a lot! Great addition to the series and one you will not be able to put down once you start!!

Quite a slow start with excessive details. What an incredible amount of patience with a nosy, unidentified 'visitor'! Incredible cheek, as it turns out!!! Blimey!!! Well handled, 'papa'. Great job! Heart-wrenching recall of 'mama' during the peek-a-boo. As for that Dorcas! Ignoble moment or not, I say well done, Lydia. A good whack deserves another under those circumstances -not very Christian though but quite understandable Nice double turnaround for Jeb.
True, the series is about bachelors and babies, but did we lose sight of the ROMANTIC LOVE between the couple??? Barely a page on that -humorous though the carry-on with Rick and Baby Madeline was.

I would have absolutely rated this book higher if these two things things would have happened;
1. She jumped from the engagement to a few months later where: 1. They got married. 2. She made things better with her sister. 3. The fire. Like how did it happen?
2. There was no epilogue! Ugh! I hate that so much. Did they move? Did they have a boy or girl?
Those two simple things would have given this a 5 Star rating.

The best of the series to date

This has got to be the best in the Bachelor and Babies Series to date. The story is a simple one, but beautifully told with (for once) the baby at the forefront. Each character is paramount to the story. I enjoyed the twins' characters especially.
Kendrick is a butcher in Columbia, California when a sheriff arrives with a baby claiming the dead mother legally announced that Kendrick was the father. His panic and efforts to tend this baby were enjoyable to read and so realistic. Lydia and her two sons arrive in Columbia to live with her sister Dorcas and family. She has unpleasant memories of Dorcas when growing up, but has nowhere else to go.
Dorca s informs Lydia she must marry again soon, but to stay away from the immoral butcher who has an illegitimate child.

An Enjoyable Experience

I enjoyed reading Kendrick, which is the first book I have read by this author. As I was reading yesterday, I came across an advertisement for a free sample of Kendrick. I ordered the free sample and spent the rest of the evening reading the sample and then purchasing the complete book. I was impressed. I definitely will be looking at other books in the series and especially other books by Zina Abbott.

Kendrick Denham. Bachelor, butcher and a man with no plans whatsoever of a wife and family. He likes his life just the way it is. His butcher shop is doing well, he raises chickens to sell for meat, sells the eggs and that is all he needs.

Lydia Meyer. Mother of two who has been forced away from the home she has lived in for the past 10 years upon the death of her husband. His oldest son has inherited and informed her she must leave. The only place she can go is to her sister Dorcas's home in California. NOT that she really wants to... they don't get on well. In fact Dorcas doesn't get on well with almost anyone. Her twin daughters are a gem in this story! They have some plans!

A baby is brought to Kendrick's shop one day by the sheriff. Stating that the mother named him as the father, and she is now his responsibility since the Mother has passed away. How is Kendrick to prove this is not true? He knows nothing about caring for an infant.

Lydia needs something to focus her life on and helping Kendrick just might be the thing she needs the most. This book has it all. Humor... yes chickens and goats can bring about some pretty funny things. Children, babies, and two people that can create a loving family if they can just figure it all out.
Once again I am so impressed by the Authors meticulous research for the time and place of this story. I received an ARC of this book and am choosing to leave an honest review.

Great Story

This is another wonderful story in the Bachelors and Babies Series. I really liked this one as it is so different from the others so far. Great hero and heroine. Nasty neighbor and heroines sister that share a bit of his property and is a pain for everyone in town.
Sweet little baby he gets, dropped off at his butcher store.
It just a really good clean story. I loved most of the characters except the heroines sister and our hero's nasty neighbor. And of course a wonderful HEA.

Well crafted historical romance about single parents' dilemmas in the 1880s, especially in the Wild West. Convention dictated single women live with family. I immediately fell in love the humor of the twins and how they moved the story along - against all odds with the tension caused by their fault finding, disapproving mother Dorcas. The issue of bed wetting and discipling children at home at in old country schools is address. A page turning informative historical romance. Received an ARC but this is my honest review.

Great story

Kendrick/Rick- a butcher who inherited a baby girl
Lydia- after death of husband she and her 2 boys left Philadelphia to live with her mean sister
I enjoyed reading this lovely story that is well written (though a bit slow going) and charismatic characters. Their story has a sweet and witty HEA .

I highly recommend this book. Personally, I enjoy a full length story over novella length and this story does not disappoint.
Meet Kendrick, the local butcher in a mining town out west. When the sheriff brings a young girl to his shop, insisting he is the father, Kendrick’s life is turned upside down. How can he care for a young child?
His obnoxious, sharped tongued neighbor does not help the situation. But her determined twin daughters have it all planned out for Kendrick. They are just waiting for their widowed Aunt Lydia to arrive.
Lydia dreads coming west to stay with her older domineering and ungrateful sister, but with two young sons in tow, she has no where else to go.
I enjoyed the author’s well researched details of the time period. Even down to what babies wore at the time.
The storyline takes twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.

WOW!!! This story has it all. There is humor, twists and turns, mystery, lots of action, a set of young adorable conniving twins and an abandoned baby. This is Kendrick and Lydia's story. Upon the death of her husband, Lydia is forced to move to Columbia, CA to live with her sister. To his surprise, the sheriff arrives at Kendrick's butcher shop with a six month old baby stating that, before she died, the baby's mother named him the baby's father. Lydia agrees to help Kendrick care for the baby. Will this interaction lead to a HEA? Be sure to read this fun filled book to find out. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Kendrick has made a good living as a butcher and have no plans for a family until he becomes the caretaker and father of an adorable six months old girl. Luckily he gets some help when the twins of his neighbors show up. Lydia is forced to come to live by her sister but she and her sons aren’t very happy about it. Will helping the neighbor with his little daughter bring some happiness in their life?
This is such a fun story with some mystery, an adorable baby and of course the funny twin sisters. You’re gonna love all the characters in this story. Great book in this fun series.

THE BUTCHER AND THE WIDOW AND A BABY

While the story is part of the Bachelors and Babies series, it is a stand-alone story. The story is a clean historical western-based book. The story will bring together Kendrick Denham and Mrs. Lydia Meyers together. Kendrick will be shocked to be told he is the father of a six-month-old baby girl named Madeline and need help so he can run his butcher shop business.

Kendrick “Rick” Denham will have an unusual visit from a woman and her man-of-business where she will check out his business, his mannerism and purchase two hens from him. What a shock when several months later, the sheriff and deputy show up in a wagon with a rocking chair, trunk, basket, goat, and baby girl—claiming that he is the child’s father. It doesn’t take long for word to spread around the town of Columbia—including to his backyard neighbor, Dorcas Thompson.

“You placed the order. Now, looks like it’s time for you to take delivery.” --the Deputy

“The wages of sin, Mr. Denham. The wages of sin.” –Dorcas Thompson

Widow Lydia Meyers, along with her two sons, Will and Cole, and her stepson, Race, travels from their home in Pennsylvania, where they have been asked to leave by the eldest brother, who inherited from his father. Race will help them get to California safely, but he now needs to make a name for himself. Lydia and her sons will be at the mercy of her sister, Dorcas, and her family.

The story's plot will have Kendrick shocked when the sheriff informs him that he was named as the father of the baby—but he knows that isn’t true. Proving it impossible, the mother deceased, and the child placed in his care. A letter from Pearl about Madeline helps some but still leaves many unanswered questions. How will he care for a baby and run a business? The Thompson twins, Caroline (Caro) and Charlotte (Lottie), keep this story in stitches as they are blunt in what they say and their interactions with each other. While they help Kendrick, without his consent, their suggestion of Lydia as a caregiver for Madeline makes things better for Rick but causes issues in the Thompson household.

“We don’t know much about how babies come into being, but even we know it takes longer than two months to make a six-month-old baby.”

The story is a mystery, suspense, with plenty of laughing out loud humor. It will have a mother wanting better for her child and picking a man she believes will be trustworthy. Two sisters are complete opposites, one a snob, the other a caring person, and too much history and tension for them to live together. It will be twin sisters who make this story with their actions and comments. Then add in an innocent child, a severed relationship, and a short romance—and you have a fantastic tale based around a historical location.

“Even though we’ve known each other for only days, I feel we’ve already been through so much. I was afraid to believe I could make a good choice this soon.”

The story has several twists and turns, mostly likable characters and human compassion. Life throws obstacles, and you can either grow with it or give up. Rick picked an occupation that people needed, a butcher—Jeb had gold fever, but learned that his skills are better used as a builder—and walking away from his family was a mistake. Rick and Lydia are each in a predicament, and either they can complain or find a happily ever after solution—the chemistry is there, the need is great—the outcome is their future. This time in life, it is their choice.

“None of us knows everything, but we do the best we can. Love is what really matters. The rest will come.”

So firstly my review will contain a few spoilers. So heres the think I loved Kendrick & Jeb. They were both really loveable and likable characters. It would have been nice if the author had left Jeb open for a wife because i would have really liked his story. But there were some points that ruined the book for me.

Firstly when Lydia is introduced, Rick chases off a man peeping on the baby through the window when the twins visit. I'm not sure if this was just to make the character weird as it did come across as really odd and uncomfortable for me. But the author didn't go anywhere with it. She mentioned several times he was worried someone might come for the baby and try to claim her and it mentions that the mother doesn't want her biological father knowing about her. She didn't go anywhere with it. When she introduced the creepy man i thought for sure it would be something a long those lines. But nope just 1 perve and a dead end .

The other issue i have with the book. Other than my previous comment it was beautifully written until Lydia moved in with her boys. It was made a big thing young Will had a bed wetting issue. That was never addressed with Rick I had hoped the author was going to develop the relationship by Rick helping Will stop bed wetting. (making him feel safe and comfortable, giving him pointers to not drink before bed ect.) but nope it was not mentioned to Rick about Wills issue and there was no help for the poor lad. When Lydia moved in it was just forgotten about and never brought up again. After she moved in it just felt really rushed. Tying up loose ends to finish the book as quickly as possible.

Now my biggest issue with the book. Mrs Thompson, Lydias sister. From the start the author made her the villain a horrible women. It came to blows when she hit Will, Cole and Lydia with her ruler. She was written perfectly and the bad women. But like my last paragraph it was a rubbish end. All was forgiven just to end the book. Now i know if someone hit my kid they would have to do a helluva lot of grovelling before i would even entertain the idea of forgiveness. Yet when Lydia gets married she wants to build bridges with her sister and have her as a witness.... it didn't make sense to me at all. It mentioned she hit the twins and her husband would not tolerate it. Where was her comeuppance? I had hoped her husband would of found out, kicked her out and she would be grovelling to Lydia for help. What goes around comes around sort of thing. but nope nothing. And for me it just completely ruined the entirety of the book.

Whirlwind story

This is a very fast moving story with very endearing characters (except for Dorcus lol). A lot happens in Kendrick's life in a very short period of time. Lydia and her two sons, end up moving in with Dorcus and her family after Lydia's husband dies. Dorcus has twin 14 year old daughters who are incorrigible but lovable. Dorcus is a neighbor to Kendrick and is not a very nice person. She finds fault with him and pretty much everyone in town. However, when a sheriff shows up with a baby saying that Kendrick is the father, Circus has a lot of nasty things to say. Lydia finds that she can't stay living with Dorcus, and it leads to more interesting events. To say the least, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and don't want to give too much away. Take my word for it, you will thoroughly enjoy this book as much as I did.

This is such a cute story about that’s humorous and also a love story. Kendrick Denham, a confirmed bachelor, is stunned one when a nearby sheriff drops off a 6 months old girl born to a madam and says he is named as the father. Never mind he wasn’t and told he’s responsible for the baby. He soon falls in love with little Madeline and knows he will keep her. He hires an neighbor lady to care for the baby and soon begins to have feelings for her. The highlight of the story are twin teenage girls who are the nieces of Lydia who cares for his baby. The girls not only insist they are needed to help care for the baby but they set out to encourage Kendrick and Lydia marry and it makes for some funny reading.

Kendrick : Too old for Babies (book9)

I really enjoyed this story. Kendrick had a butcher shop during 1850’s in a town called Columbia. He tried panning for gold but found his butcher shop brought in more money and supplied a need for the people in the gold fields and families moving to Columbia. One day, he had areal surprise. The sherriff form Sonora arrived with a baby for him stating he had been named as the father. There is so much more to this story and you will really enjoy reading. Don’t miss out in a good story.

Strong four and half stars

This is a great storyline, different from the other bachelor and babies book. Certainly an individual story. Once you star you really don’t want to put it down.
There is very little talk of rape and “whoring” so if the advanced younger readers do read this they may have questions after they read this. But there really isn’t enough mention of those to not recommend this to my advanced reading preteen friends and others you won’t waste your time on this one.

I really enjoyed this one. Kendrick beloved he was set in his ways. He never thought he would have a wife or children. Then along came Madeline. While not his biologically, he grew to love her quickly. Then came Lydia and her boys. I loved how we discovered what had happened to each of them and what they were going through all throughout the story. It was sweet how this little family came together. A great read.

Cute

The time line was rushed. Everything was done well but, the voice of the author came through too much on the twins. They could have dawdled more and talked about their lives and expectations. But the twins are like we need a grand romantic gesture. Hence, the cute proposal where the twins speak for Kendric and Lydia. A little bit of heat wouldn't be amiss either. Just enough show a real spark.

An interesting read

It was interesting to read about a butcher's shop in an early miners town in California. The twin 14 yr old twin girls are hilarious fun characters. Lots of drama as the local butcher is faced with the issue of being named the father of a baby girl whose mother has died. He insists he had no part in the conception of the baby whose situation is complicated by the fact of her birth out of wedlock!

Such a sweet love story

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet gem. Couldn't put it down. Not only is it a romance between a man and a woman, but a tale of the love of a man who is suddenly saddled with an infant. The characters are well written. The storyline flows gently and humorously. I love how the children are worked into the whole story. A very satisfying ending too.
