Malory drops readers right into action as this new series opens. Sheridan, betrayed by her sister, is overwhelmed with godlike anger and in a haze, attempts to murder her with a pair of scissors and some unnatural fire. The incident forces Sheridan's father and grandfather to drop the emotional bomb that she is in fact a descendant of the Greek God, Ares, and that for her own safety they're going to send her to an academy for magically gifted individuals like herself. Sheridan finds herself in a whole new magical world, trying to acclimate to a new school, find new friends, all while being occasionally attacked by deadly beasts from the Underworld. The hottest guy in school, who also happens to be forbidden by her grandfather, has pledged himself to help her survive, but will that be enough? And can she handle a secret friendship, if that's all it is, with Xander while she tries to get a handle on everything else?
Malory manages to make both the demi-god and supernatural academy tropes feel both fun and fresh. I loved that Sheridan is a descendant of the war god and feels deep, simmering anger and feels passionate about learning weaponry and defense skills. Forcing her to attend Aphrodite classes instead kept both readers and Sheridan on their toes, as she tries to master social niceties instead of what's her natural inclination. The world and monsters within were inventive and interesting. And the tension with Xander... *sigh* I cannot wait to see how that relationship develops in the second book after the final chapter's revelations in Descendants Academy!!
This was a fun, fast read and I cannot wait to dive into book two.
