Tyche's Deceit

Rate this book
The enemy is already here.

After the encounter with the merciless Ezeroc on Absalom Delta, Grace Gushiken and Nathan Chevell make a run for home. They have a new mission: to warn humanity. Aliens are real. And they are already among us.

The crew of the free trader Tyche are hunted by men in black, fearsome fighters who share the Ezeroc's powers. When the Tyche lands on Earth the ship's placed on lockdown. Her crew are scattered and on the run. Without their ship or friends, Grace and Nate have no escape.

The Republic and its military have been corrupted to the core by the Ezeroc. Humanity's homeworld is at risk. As hope dwindles, Grace and Nate receive an offer they can't refuse from an unlikely source. The abhorrent espers of the Old Empire might be their only chance to save humanity. Their devil's bargain: join us, or die.

Out of time and running low on luck, Grace and Nate must gather their scattered crew. Five souls and an old heavy lifter against the might of the Republic and its alien overlords. Will the crew of the Tyche find allies in humanity's struggle for survival? Or are we doomed to be food for the insects?

Richard Parry has worked as a senior marketing manager in one of the world’s top tech companies, but it wasn't all cocaine parties. His debut novel Night’s Favor and its sequel Night’s Fall have been shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award “Best Novel” category.

His ever-growing list of novels spans urban fantasy, cyberpunk, and space opera, featuring flawed heroes, sharp dialogue, and a healthy dose of action. His Night’s Champion trilogy follows an alcoholic-turned-werewolf saving the world, while Future Forfeit explores a neon-drenched cyberpunk future where hacking the system is just the start. Meanwhile, Ezeroc Wars throws readers into the deep end of an interstellar war against a swarm species that doesn’t take no for an answer. Across over 20 novels (and counting), Richard delivers stories packed with heart, explosions, and the occasional bad decision.

Richard lives in Wellington with the love of his life, Rae. They have cats, who chase birds. The birds, who have the power of flight, don’t seem to mind.

The Tyche's crew of disparate misfits come home - only to touch down in the centre of a multi-sided brawl about the future of humanity. Honestly, the amount of violence and gore in this book is incredible, as is the ability of Richard Parry to sustain the story through an amazing amount of mayhem.
From fists, claws and heads, through broken bottles and sharp blades, plasma handguns, hi-tech laser rifles and masers, to ship-borne heavy weapons and nukes, the fight tumbles from one scene to the next, and is carried forward by every one of the crew. The enemy of one moment becomes an ally of convenience in the next. Orphans of the fallen Empire's service battle the Republic's forces. Simultaneously the Ezeroc infiltrate Earth, and try to capture Grace, destroy the Tyche, and defend their bases. The sinister espers have an agenda of their own, so does organized crime, while Hope simply wants to make things right with Reiko.
There are some similarities to (the movie version) of Starship Troopers, and Independence Day, but this is not a cheap imitation of either. While personal loyalties bend and break, in the end what matters is family. And we are all, first of all, human.

I do suggest that one *not* read this book without first reading Tyche's Flight because here the reader is flung headfirst into non-stop action. If one does not already know who is who, I believe the intensity of the story will leave an unprepared reader hopelessly confused.

Another exciting and thrilling 2nd! The misfit crew come together and unite as family, overcoming their emotions. the characters are so well described and the in depth is wonderful! New twists and turns unravel desperate encounters, time to be together with humanity.
Some fun facts to minimize the fear, action packed, always trying to be one step ahead made me dizzy with wonder!

Nate and Grace...a couple? I love this rag tag crew complete with all their flaws. They are truly family!!! You will root for them, shake your head at times, laugh along with them and even at them and shed a tear or two along the way. Mr. Parry might get wordy from time but you will forgive his wordiness just so you can continue the saga. A close to perfect blend of a family of crewmembers, creepy, skin crawling invaders (the insectoid Ezeroc), a Republic infested by these creatures and an offer to join up with a depleted rebel Empire to save humanity. What possibly is not to like? But best of all, Mr. Parry offers hope!!! Hope that the good (?) guys will win out. I’m starting number 3. I can hardly wait to see what happens to Tyche’s family next time.

"Leave me behind! Save yourself!"

"No! You leave me behind! I don't deserve to live after my latest serial betrayal of you."

"Don't see as you've got anything left to apologize for [because emotion]. Now go on, y'all."

Heh.

Also, rotating between five POVs is just a mess.

It took me a while with my vision difficulties, but my daughter and I finally read this book #2 together and it definitely didn’t disappoint.
It continues the tale of a disfunctional spaceship crew, actually more of a family, that work well together, not only because they have to, but because they want to.
This episode in the series has constant thrills and action, both on the ground and, how the author describes space, in the hard black.
I can’t wait for the next book in this wonderful sci-fi series.
Another awesome job from Mr. Parry!

We’re not outnumbered. We’ve just got a wider selection of targets.

Read Tyche’s Flight first (and then Tyche’s Journey immediately after this one). Non-stop action. A well-defined plot and twists and turns that are always unexpected. Almost unbearable tension. Characters you want to read a lot more about. A ship crew that is as much about betrayal as it is loyalty.
Way too much shooting with “blasters”. Bodies are blown into a red mist, blown into chunks, or set on fire. You might get used to it. Anyway, I could only give the book a 4.5 stars. The five stars is a rounding exercise.

Very tense

The struggle of the ship Tyche continues and the challenges escalate. More key characters are introduced. The new characters slot into the story easily. The aliens take on a new dimension and the threat they pose to humanity continues the horror novel feel.

Good writing and relationships that fit the story. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

I devoured this book, didn't want to put it down until I finished. Parry has delivered another fast paced, exciting, and fun story. Tyche's crew is coming together and working hard to defeat mankind's deadly enemy. Can't wait for the next book! I received this book for free for an honest review.

A good rollicking space opera. There is hardly time to draw breath from one moment to the next but that’s part of the fun.

This is a series where you do have to start with book one Tyche’s Flight otherwise you will be lost to of some of the subtext with the characters as well as what is the reasoning behind this non-stop action packed second part of the series.

The crew is dealing with problems from within their dysfunctional family and they need to get it together or the enemy that can take you apart from the mind out will not only tear them apart but all of humanity in it’s wake.

There is a lot of fre-enemy relationships in this series. Those that were firing at you one minute may be shaking hands and making a deal at the end of the day.

It’s great seeing the growth in Kohl especially as he is warring with his mercenary side against his secret desire to belong to a family. Seeing the family grow and evolve into a tight knit cohesive unit is great.

Their journey towards saving themselves and the human race is filled with weapons, blood and guts galore. Combine that with dry sarcastic wit and non-stop action where up is down and down is up at times keeps you on a knifes edge as you hope they are successful in their seat of the pants plans.

Tyche's Deceit was a fun read. It has a lot of adventure and witty repertoire. It picks up where Book 1 leaves off with them trying to catch the alien bug creatures that are trying to take over the universe. They learn what the aliens are trying to achieve and what they're deadly ship looks like as they go through the Galaxy trying to find them and keep their crew together and alive.

This book goes into the relationship of the crew members and how they learn to accept each others quirky dispositions. The crew member Kohl learns that maybe it's good to have friends and Grace learns the same and they both realize that it's a wonderful to have a family and that is exactly what the crew is on the Tyche's a big weird family. The captain of the ship, Nate brings them all together as they fight across the universe to destroy the invading bug aliens.

This book is just as exciting as the first one and continues on it's ongoing mission to not only save humankind but aliens also. They all work together and fight together to keep their homes and universe safe. I can't wait to see what will happen in book 3 Tyche's Crown . I've really enjoyed the adventure and the camaraderie of its characters, they are all melting into a great fighting machine. Come join me, you won't regret it I promise.

The bugs are back and the crew of the starship Tyche are ready, more or less, to take them on again in this fast-paced, page-turning space opera.
The crew of the Tyche consists of Captain Nate Chevell, the empath and assessor Grace Gushiken, the deck hand and master of arms of all sorts October Kohl, Elspeth (El) Roussel ship’s Helm, and Hope the ship’s Engineer.
They have just finished knocking off a colony of mind-altering bugs, the ezeroc, and arrived on Earth only to find a world that is in turmoil from occupation by the Republic and a resistance from the old Empire. And then there are the bugs that have infiltrated not just Earth but the Republic high command, which makes for one whale of a fast-paced space opera that climbs to a climax where it all comes together in one duel of the espers and the crew of the Tyche versus the bugs and their queen.
And mixed in in the middle is the Tyche and its crew, trying to stay alive. Oh, and don’t forget to watch for the sly humor that makes this tale even more fun to read.

Sarcasm wrapped in Humour is awesome.

Bk2, the continuing saga of Nate and his misfit crew of the "Tyche" is another, seat of your pants, non-stop wild ride through the mucky, muck, muck of betrayal & the fight to stay alive and one step ahead of the Ezeroc (alien type insects) that want to suck out your life force and take over your brain.
The fight through all the goryness is epic.
OMG! You gotta love those's weapons, Kohl is a connoisseur of weaponry
Gotta love the crew, flaws and all.
Nate, Grace, El, Kohl, Hope and the Tyche, the Goddess of luck.
Their Past built them, their Now defines them, their Future......Well that's still up for debate......after all the war against the Ezeroc is still ongoing and the outcome is yet to be determined.
Up Next, "Tyche's Crown" let the journey continue and that the Tyche and her crew always fly true.
Absolutely highly recommended.

What if you were coming "home" with an uncomfortable group of misfit characters, well developed and deep, and when you got there, "home" was literally out to get you? And what if you knew why, but that the unbelievable had happened almost unnoticed by the humans in the street.

I mean they are humans, right? But what if they weren't, and you knew what they really are and they knew that you know and - well, you might want to buddy up with your misfit crew and try to save the future of mankind....but what if that involved dancing with the old devils to gain the chance of eliminating the new?

You better decide FAST - because it's already unfolding, and maybe you could stop it if anybody believed in you, which they don't....

What if you don't buy this book? Well, that's your lost opportunity to be rivited by a fast, action, rough and complelling saga that's just the 2nd book in a series that you too will impatiently await to learn what comes now??

This is a solid SF action/adventure book with space flight, futuristic weapons and nasty aliens.

This is book two in the series and it is highly recommended that they be read in order so that you understand the background and characters.

I have been looking forward to a good SF series for a while and I think I just found it. We have everything I have been hoping for and more. The writing is solid, the story fast paced, and the characters are well developed. There is also plenty of intrigue, hidden agendas and surprises to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering how they are going to get out of each jam. It kept me turning pages when I should have been doing other things. I found it highly addictive and look forward to the next book.

Highly recommended.

An exploration of family, set against the backdrop of past betrayals and current danger.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. And I'm pleased that I jumped on board!

This book continues the Tyche series. While you can read it alone, I think you'll better appreciate it if you read Tyche's Flight first. My personal taste in books tends a little more toward the gritty, I've really enjoyed this bubblegum series. All the books I've read so far have felt like Parry is writing an episode of Firefly set in his own universe. It's a feel-good, family-oriented (with one tasteful sex scene) story of broken people learning how to trust again.

After enjoying the first book in this series so much, I was nervous on how well subsequent books in the opera would stand up. I needn't have worried! I tore through Tyche's Deceit just as quickly as Tyche's Flight. As before, what I particularly enjoyed were the characters, I'd say that was even more key in this book, as while the plot was good and interesting, it wasn't as unusual or unexpected as in the previous. But the character storylines woven through it were what earned it 5 stars for me. I particularly enjoyed Kohl's development, and the inner thoughts of Hope and El.

I really liked this book mainly because I love the central characters and the interactions between them, this is what helps make these books different from many Science Fiction/Space Operas.
Having said that there are times when some aspects of the story made me uncomfortable. The author wants certain things to happen, but how they happen isn't always clear and when you look closely they don’t always make sense. People just appear from nowhere and some of the space combat with chunks of flying rock was bizarre.

The Tyche finally touches down at home only to land in the middle of a multi-sided brawl. This book is filled with gore however, I must say the author pulled it off, kept it interesting and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

More Please

Five stars all the way for me. Though I do have one gripe and it could put me off, it's the word "together" . Really, how many times can one author have the one word over and over again. Sorry, but I cringe even time i read it.

I'd give it 5 stars but like a lot of us, I just can't stand BUGS...lol
Great story line with invaders similar to Orson Scott Card's formic war series, which I loved. Already ordered the next book, Tyche's Crown.
