The year is 1857 in the sprightly seaside town of Calicut. Four have been chosen by supernaturals of the past. They battle the East India Company's ambitious railways, for hidden beneath the plains of Northern India is a relic so sacred, it has been guarded fiercely over millennia. Polio cannot dampen Sarah's spirit, skin colour makes no difference to Charlotte, Chandran is an unflinching patriot and Colin will be redeemed by a second chance. River, Laughter, Moon & C, where time surrenders to friendship and courage......
Pavitra's passion for her rich heritage is reflected in "River, Laughter, Moon & C". Her style of writing and the subtle humour interpolated in places is riveting. In a nutshell, the congenial blend of cultures across space and time makes for an interesting read.
A lovely storyline that beautifully connects the present and the past in an unexpected manner. A book that leaves the reader with a lasting taste of Kerala and it's ancient traditions.
Beautifully written and well-researched book by Pavitra. Takes you way back to the colonial era and keeps you wanting for more as soon as you start the book. A fabulous read and I loved it!
This is a lyrical, achingly beautiful story about the interlinking of four lives in 19th century India and their descendants 160 years later. Menon's descriptions are so delicious that you wish that you had written them yourself and she plunges you right into an exotic world of mystery and intrigue. There are elements of magical realism in the story, where the supernatural conspires with the 'good' characters to bring about a satisfying ending. The only reason I didn't give the story a 5 star is because I felt a little confused at times about the characters - Chandran and Chanakyan; and Charlotte and Carly are just some of the names which could have been more varied. Also, the story veered so frequently between different voices that at times I got lost with what was actually happening.
