Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!

I love how the mangaka deepens the mystery of the past with an unexpected event! I don't want to ruin it but Aima sets in motion the opening of a door and the past comes exploding out of it... and the mud whale will never be the same again as it seems to be connected to what is happening to Ouni too. We get a lot of page time with Kuchiba, the major's aide, as he is desperate to learn about the previous mayor's history with this room. I loved it! I totally fell for the two characters from the past... and while I know they probably didn't end well, I really felt for them.

I was just as caught up as Chakuro to learn what the mayor's hidden history was about... I for get about his hypergraphia but it leads to super stories within stories like this one! It's super fun how she hid the way to this room, of course, it helps to have the heart of the nous on your side too. The thing is that this entire war between these different countries is totally mixed up in all of this... its due to fantastical technology, the fighting spirit of human beings and the coming and going of love.

I was totally tense as I learned the early history of the mud whale. I don't blame the people of the whale for wanting to know why they are there and what has been kept from them. That internal struggle in the mud whale is bound to explode because its not right to keep the truth from you, even if it means your sanity. I'm not sure the unmarked should be leading alone at this point... the good intentions of the mayor aside, the marked should know how their life is being spent.

I really loved a lot of the art in this volume... I love the stark contrast of the scenery and the explorations into the belly of the mud whale. We get to wind through a maze, enter a secret room, see an execution, and its all so gorgeous! To be honest I missed the art from the paper volume, its just so, so, so much prettier on paper. And the art is so, so, so good...

I totally plan on picking up Children of the Whale vol 7 when the paper one comes out... its not too late to start this magnificent series! It encompasses an entire new world with fantastical technology, a hidden history of prejudice and rebellion, and a people whose lives are spent by its prison. It's like nothing you've ever experiences before... and don't forget the art is so, so, so good...

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review. It has not influenced my opinions.

And I don't have the next volume… So hard after such an ending!! I also loved the novella at the end of the book! Can't wait to read volume 8!

This volume might be the most mysterious one in the series thus far. Additionally, we are able to see into the history of the first arrival of the first prisoners on the Mud Whale and their stories as well as the story of the first mayor, Dyō, and her son, the Daimonas, Midén, now known as Ouni.
Considering we are in year 93 of the Sand Exile and they made the calendar the tenth year of their exile (as the year Ouni was born, though he was born as a ten year old boy), this would make Ouni 103 years old. That is, unless the people of the Mud Whale had accounted for the ten years past before they created the calendar, which would made Ouni 93 years old. Either way, he is quite youthful for his age, sustained by the mold moss spores which contain the life energy absorbed from the people of the Mud Whale, absorbed by the Mud Whale’s Nous.

There was a lot to take in and consider in this volume, most of it all focusing on the past and the mysteries the past had left behind.

I also liked the short story at the end. “Another Record: The Sky on the Wall, Next to the Light”, but… it only made me hurt, the entire time. I’m not sure if I felt any sort of hope. It all simply hurt. But it was entertaining and well written nonetheless.

Moving forward, I wonder what will become of Ouni if he loses all nourishment. Will there become some sort of way for him to break free of the Mud Whale? Has he already begun the process when he lost the ability to access his thymia? Or, alternatively, was that the result of a sickness from having left his home for too long when they invaded an Empire ship? Perhaps we shall see in the next volume…

Warnings: violence, death, grief

Rep: neurodiverse main character (hypergraphia)

With the truth of the thymia and the Falaina revealed, our main characters are heading towards new lands on the Sea of Sand. But Aima has her own agenda and so far it isn't clear what it is; at the end of the last volume, she was seen talking to the two kids who were big on anarchy, and in this one, she opens the door into a past that lets them see the origin of the Daimones. Most of the plot in this book is background, with the story of the first mayor of the Falaina, Dyo, being told in heartbreaking series of events. In the present, Chakuro and his friends have to piece together clues from the Eldest, the previous mayor's diaries, and what they know of the Mud Whale, to find out the truth about the Daimones. The artwork in this one is lush, with sweeping panels full of details, and a backstory that opens up the world of this series even further. It is an enlightening, but also very sad, book.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.

We get a few different chronologies in this one. What appears to be a Chakuro of a future time opens the volume with a poem from Mayor Suou, and his recollections return us to the timeline of the main story with the Mud Whale still on its way to Amonlogia. Aíma nudges the Children along with a startling apparition that sends Chakuro and friends on a hunt for a mysterious, hidden room, Midén’s room. Secrets of the ships past are laid bare. And, finally, we get a story about a young king, his ascension, and his jesters... a very melancholy excerpt. I wonder what, if any, influence and connection that tale will have on the Children of the Whales? With all of the time jumping, this one felt the most disconnected from the main storyline, but I was, nevertheless, engaged. I feel like more heartbreak is around the corner, but the opening pages give me hope that there is a future for Chakuro, Kikujin, and other Children.
