This volume might be the most mysterious one in the series thus far. Additionally, we are able to see into the history of the first arrival of the first prisoners on the Mud Whale and their stories as well as the story of the first mayor, Dyō, and her son, the Daimonas, Midén, now known as Ouni.
Considering we are in year 93 of the Sand Exile and they made the calendar the tenth year of their exile (as the year Ouni was born, though he was born as a ten year old boy), this would make Ouni 103 years old. That is, unless the people of the Mud Whale had accounted for the ten years past before they created the calendar, which would made Ouni 93 years old. Either way, he is quite youthful for his age, sustained by the mold moss spores which contain the life energy absorbed from the people of the Mud Whale, absorbed by the Mud Whale’s Nous.
There was a lot to take in and consider in this volume, most of it all focusing on the past and the mysteries the past had left behind.
I also liked the short story at the end. “Another Record: The Sky on the Wall, Next to the Light”, but… it only made me hurt, the entire time. I’m not sure if I felt any sort of hope. It all simply hurt. But it was entertaining and well written nonetheless.
Moving forward, I wonder what will become of Ouni if he loses all nourishment. Will there become some sort of way for him to break free of the Mud Whale? Has he already begun the process when he lost the ability to access his thymia? Or, alternatively, was that the result of a sickness from having left his home for too long when they invaded an Empire ship? Perhaps we shall see in the next volume…
