Pretty sure this was written by Guy in my MFA. No, no, don't let Nature be the main character in this, make sure that mediocre white dude is the main character, and make sure he is as whiny and unlikable as possible. If you're looking for a much better iteration of this type of writing, try Tucker Lake Chronicle.
Seems like there were a lot of books like this in the 70's. Some highly educated guy goes off and lives in the forest, maybe inspired by Thoreau. This one is just slightly above average. There's not a great deal of reflection, but it is at least not dated. The essay on the perception if time towards the end bumped it up from a two star book to three.
