"Нет пророка в своем отечестве", - это столь любимое писателями изречение вполне мог бы подтвердить и Льюис, ведь "Письма Баламута", первое опубликованное им художественное произведение, оказалось практически незамеченным на родине, и лишь шумный успех в США заставил британцев по достоинству оценить литературный талант нового автора.
Сюжет "Писем Баламута" несложен - маститый, многого добившийся в адской иерархии бес отечески наставляет неискушенного племянника, делающего первые шаги на пути уловления человеческих душ. Дебютное задание бесенка в дьявольском высшем обществе - совращение добродетельного молодого англичанина. Юноша только-только вступил на путь веры, и его неокрепший дух представляется легкой добычей юному бесу.
В сборник также входит примыкающий к "Письмам Баламута" рассказ "Баламут предлагает тост".

Clive Staples Lewis was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day.
