Island Reunion #1

Summerhouse Reunion

Five weeks, four friends, three novels, two romances, and one cold case mystery, combine to bring you the first in a series of reunion trilogies by USA Today Bestselling author Kathi Daley.

A story of love, sacrifice, personal growth, and new beginnings.

Kelly Green and her sister Kayla grew up summering on a small island off the coast of Northern California. After Kayla’s death, Kelly returns to the island where she joins three friends from her past, to commemorate both, Kayla’s life, and the life of a sixteen year old girl who disappeared from the island twenty five years earlier. Now in their early forties, each of the four remaining friends struggle to find a way to deal with their loss while also dealing with their own personal crisis.

Meanwhile, the new sheriff on the island, also a childhood friend, seems to have stumbled onto an interesting pattern the previous sheriff overlooked all together. Apparently a sixteen year old girl has gone missing from the island every fifth summer since Peggy disappeared. Some were assumed to have run away, while others were reported as missing, but one thing is for certain, none of the girls were ever seen again.

As the sheriff, the women, and other friends from the past, work together to piece together the random clues they hope will provide a mirror to the past, disturbing evidence begins to surface suggesting that the next girl to disappear will disappear this summer.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

In this first book of a trilogy we meet Kelly Green. Kelly and her twin sister Kayla spent their summers on an island just off Northern California. The two sisters hung out with four other girls every summer and friendships were made. During the summer they were sixteen one those friends just disappeared and was never found. It's twenty-five years later and Kelly is headed back to the island to spend time with the three friends that are left. She needs this time to heal, you see her twin sister has died and she feels set adrift. Her friends all have their own strifes to deal with and hopefully the friendship they each share will help in mending those hurts. Meanwhile the sheriff, that is on the island is an old friend from those days years ago, has found some interesting links between other girls who have disappeared over the years just like their friend Peggy. It looks like there is a pattern and the next girl to be taken will be happening this summer. The group begins to look into the clues that the sheriff has come across, follow along to find out what all they have come up with and where it might lead. This was a fun and emotional cozy read that will have you excited.for the next book in this series!

This is a wonderful book with lots of emotions strolling through it. It is a three-part series, continued through each book. I don’t normally care to read this sort of series, but I think it works out best this way. There are four friends left out of six childhood friends and learning what things each of them has gone through throughout the years as well as the murder mystery they are working to solve now, makes for the perfect series to be reading. I am anxiously awaiting the next two books so I can see how everything is resolved.

Summerhouse Reunion by Kathi Daley is more about life, grief, and personal growth than about a mystery involving missing teenage girls but it is still an enjoyable afternoon read. Ms. Daley's writing is so descriptive that I liked all of the women and understood many of their current situations. This is the first book of a trilogy and I look forward to reading the next one.

Review:

This is the first book in a new series and it has everything that I look for in a cozy: engaging characters, a relaxing setting and some mysteries to consider.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. All of the friends have lived through heartache and they are still trying to make sense of things. Kelly lost her sister, Carrie got divorced, and Nora is unhappy in her marriage. We have not met Quinn yet, but I am sure she has had heartache too. Seeing how they deal with their heartaches and grow is what makes this book so great.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The setting was inviting and pulled me into the story from the very beginning. Trying to figure out the missing girls was challenging and if they hope to save someone from disappearing again, they will have to work fast.

I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys a real crafted cozy mystery. I am greatly looking forward to reading the next one.

Boy am I in the minority with this book. First of all, the cover is a bit misleading. I was expecting a little "feel good" vibes. But instead, I found it somewhat depressing. Yes, it does deal with grief and marriage struggles, which is fine, but when I came to "the end" (which was not an end at all), I couldn't believe it. I thought part of the book was missing. It just stops in the middle of a conversation! We see NO resolution at all! I see a few others struggled with the ending too. I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

I want to add that I am a series reader, in fact, they are my favorite type of book to read. So I understand continuing stories from book to book. And I'm even okay with a cliffhanger or two. But this was just too abrupt - it was not an ending at all. It felt more like the author manipulating us into buying the next one. And since it is going to be a trilogy, I'm sure we will need to purchase the next two in order to reach a "true ending". The author really would have been better to combine all three books into one. The tactic didn't work for me. I'm done and will not be reading the next one.

Summerhouse Reunion earns 5/5 Police Files...Engaging Entertainment!

This first book in Kathi Daley’s Island Reunion series sends readers on a three-book journey with a compelling mystery, intriguing characters most in their forties with whom I can more easily identify, and a cliffhanger making me eager for the second installment. Kelly Green accepted an invitation to a long overdue reunion with the four remaining members of the Summer Six clique, and being back on the island has been a jar to her memories. The changes to her friends have shown the passage of time including all the memories of spending summers on the island with her twin sister who two months ago was removed from life support. It is also the twenty-fifth anniversary of the disappearance of another of her friends, and the sheriff, another friend, has stumbled on an intriguing mystery. Catching up on details of various cold cases, he found the files on that disappearance along with a pattern leading to multiple missing persons, an odd time line, and a victim profile. Kelly had been an FBI analyst and later with a tech firm, she has access to information the small sheriff department doesn’t.

Kathi’s well-written drama from Kelly Green’s perspective grabs readers right off with descriptive language, clever banter, and a fascinating introduction to the Summer Six, their past and present connections to others, and the tragedies that have befallen them over the past twenty-five years. Kelly reminisces about the summers she spent with her family, her twin sister, and although finding it bittersweet to try to move on, she does find solace and a few clues in the memories. While trying to find answers to her friend’s disappearance, the mystery focuses on connections to several cold cases (I love cold cases!) and their connections to possibly another repeat crime. It was compelling and hard to put down, but as with Kathi’s signature style, the reuniting of friends, their personal lives, weekly sailing events, and gathering at barbecues and local hangouts make it all realistic and well worth the time to get involved. The end provided a “Cool!” cliffhanger. Intriguing...but not done yet.

Summerhouse Reunion is the first installment in Kathi Daley’s Island Trilogy. The affable characters are well developed, and the well-plotted storyline flows smoothly. The author is very talented in descriptive writing, and I felt like I was right in the midst of the activities taking place and sharing the characters’ tragedies and joys. This is a fun and clean read, with a strong emphasis on caring and compassion, not only for family and friends but for the community as well. Emotions run high, so keep the tissues handy. The complex mystery encompasses cold and current cases, and the red herrings and the twists and turns will keep readers engaged and guessing.

Carrie Davidson has arranged for three of her childhood friends, Kelly Green, Nora Hargrove, and Diana “Quinn” Quinby, to return to Shipwreck Island for a long-overdue reunion and to do something to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the summer their friend, Peggy Amundson, went missing. Kelly is dealing with the recent death of her twin sister, Kayla, and her friends are each dealing with the problems life has dealt them. Kelly also reconnects with Ryder West, Carrie’s younger brother, and Sam Stone, who she’s surprised to learn is the island’s new sheriff. While going through old files left by the previous sheriff, he discovers a disturbing pattern of disappearances of sixteen-year-old girls that appears to have started with Peggy’s disappearance. Kelly, who spent a decade working as an FBI analyst, convinces Sam to let her help him review old files and look into the disappearances, and Carrie and Nora share what they know about the cases and brainstorm with Sam and Kelly.

This is a very different new series for Kathi Daley in that no mystery is actually solved in this book. It’s the first book in the Island Reunion Trilogy. It appears that each book will continue the mystery of who might have abducted and killed young women on Shipwreck Island off the California coast.

6 girls summered on Shipwreck Island as children. Peggy disappeared when she was 16. Kayla, the twin sister of Kelly, has died. Carrie has invited Kelly, Quinn, and Nora to a 5 week vacation on the island to remember Peggy on the 25th anniversary of her disappearance. In this story Kelly and Carrie are dealing with heartache and loss and are trying to put their lives back together. Nora, who appears to have the perfect life appears at the end of the book.

The story drew me in and I finished it in one sitting. I found the characters to be relatable and sympathetic. I can’t wait to read the next book in the trilogy.

Kelly Green and her twin sister, Kayla, grew up summering on an island off the coast of California. She's now meeting three friends from those years for a reunion of what's left of their group. Kayla has passed away and their friend, Peggy, disappeared from the island when she was 16. The four remaining women want to commemorate their lives.

Meanwhile, the new sheriff, another of the women's friends named Sam, has found what he thinks may be a pattern while going through cold cases. Kelly winds up helping him as they try to prevent another missing teenager.

I really enjoyed this book. Kathi Daley is a wonderful author and a favorite of mine, and this book is a prime example of why. Four women who are lifelong friends meet at a time when they need each other the most. I love the characters and the emotions captured throughout are so real making this a wonderful read. I am very eager for the next book and highly recommend this one.

I knew this was book number one of three. However, I did not expect the sudden and abrupt ending. Went to turn the page at around the 80% mark and there was no next chapter! Every plot line and character was left hanging! I find that very aggravating. I have read other Kathi Daley series but none of them had such an abrupt and unexpected ending.

I will read the next book in the series because I was interested in some of the characters. However, I will read the reviews more carefully for the next series I read to avoid this kind of frustration.

REVISED: I started the next book and realized I just didn't care about reading the rest of the series. I'm just not that interested...

Excellent series starter

This is the beginning of another series by Kathi Daley and it is exceptional as usual. The setting is a beautiful island, the characters are long time friends who are each suffering with an important life decision and there is a series of missing girls including a friend of theirs from 20 years ago. I love the first book as it has all of the important aspects of a cozy mystery and it is written by my favorite author. Can't wait for the next book in this series.

Old friends, new beginnings

Six friends spend summers together. Twenty five years after one disappears, four of them plan a reunion (sadly, as life would have it, the fifth had passed away from a car accident). In this first installment, the first two of them get reacquainted, and while waiting for the other two to arrive, work with the local sheriff - a friend from their teenage years - to try to solve the mystery of their friend’s disappearance, and discover that other girls had met the same fate.

Connections

When her twin dies, Kelly goes back to visit the island her family vacationed in. She reconnects with friends, including once bad boy turned sheriff, Sam. Sam has been looking into the disappearance of her friend, and found several other missing girls. Will they solve the cases before a new girl is lost? We can only hope...

Life

When four of the original six friends gather for a reunion, they all find that life has not turned out the way any of them planned. The characters are complex and intriguing and the location pulls you in til you want to be there too. Adjusting to the new realities of their lives, they are also pulled into the missing cases of young girls. This is a cliffhanger and will continue into the next book, but it is so good it will be worth the wait.

I loved the characters and story line in this first book of a three book series.

With a cold case or three, and old childhood friends who haven't spent much time together in a long time, there is a lot of emotion, mystery and even a dab of romance.

Since this book is part of a trilogy, I can't wait to jump into the next two to find out the ending. If they are as good as this one, I will be a very happy reader.

Friends and motions

The characters in the story are so relate able. Suffolk in live with each one. it is nice to have a love story combined with the intrigue of the missing of their friend so many years ago. A wonderful story of connections and devotions of a life time between these adults. Who have remained in touch over the years. A great book to read on a Sunday afternoon!

In this new three part series. We meet four friends who meet up on summer for five weeks. There will be romance and an old mystery which will bind them together.

They will together to solve an old case and romance will ignite during the time they spend together.
This is a bit different than the author usual cozy mysteries and it seems like a promising start.

Ending

The ending was the end of a paragraph. Right in the middle of a scene. It’s as if the writer sent it to the editor without finishing the book. Wouldn’t be so bad but the next one doesn’t come out until the end of May. I am writing this in mid April. I am very frustrated and angry I doubt if I will read another book by this author, I have read most of her other books.

Loved it!

Really good 👍. Characters that you can warm up to quickly. The grief was intense and heart wrenching but characters showed strength in the way they handled it. Plot interesting and mysterious. I would have given this book five stars but it is a cliff hanger. Please hurry with the next two episodes.

First in a trilogy that finds four of six remaining friends getting together to remember the twin of one of them who recently passed, and the friend who disappeared twenty-five years ago. All of the friends have past and present grief and troubles to deal with and healing to do, which starts in this book. Can't wait for the other two books.

Mediocre. Too much repetitive “I” from the narrator, and for myself, if another main character seems to be drinking too much, why are they opening bottles of wine each evening? I also felt as if the author couldn’t decide if this series is more romance or mystery. Perhaps the story will improve with the next installments

Friends and mystery

As always you can't go wrong in reading a Kathie Daley novel. This three parter leaves you guessing and looking for clues plus seeing how four friends lives have changed in the last thirty years. I have read the first of the three box set and am looking forward to reading the next two and finding out who the killer is.
