American Pioneers & Patriots will allow your 3rd and 4th grade students to explore America's past through the fictional accounts of typical pioneer families. Young patriots of today will gain an appreciation of the courage it took to build this great nation of ours!
I read this book to my two older children when they were in early elementary. I just finished reading this to my third child who is in third grade and it was a JOY to read again! I LOVE this history book!
As the forward mentions, this is not a dry and boring textbook about political and military events. In these pages are fictional stories about boys and girls who lived all over the country during different time periods and experienced adventure in this new country.
This book starts with a story of the first children to leave Spain for the New World and it ends with the Transcontinental Railroad. My son, who really doesn’t love to listen to books actually enjoyed this history book and I believe he now has a solid foundation of our country’s history.
I read this 4 years ago when Caleb and Colin were in 3rd and 1st grade, and they loved the stories. They made a few comments this year and last when it was again scheduled in the My Father's World curriculum for 2nd graders, as I was reading it to Callie and Carson. They commented that they remembered the book and loved it. I also love it for making history come alive and showing the many different ways people lived at different times and in different places in America. It doesn't go in depth into actual history of biographical details etc of people, but it was a good amount for that age.
The book takes fictional children and places them into real historical events that the reader may understand the history and identify with the characters. I understand what the author was doing here, but I'm not convinced it was the best approach to get children interested in history.
We used this book as part of our reading on America per MFW's curriculum. We really loved the individual stories of the families and giving us an insight on the settings during those time periods. And boy, did we travel through time this past school year!
We used this as a read aloud with our second grade homeschool curriculum. Our fifth grader Is looking forward to reading this independently in his free time. The stories are sweet and enjoyable. Excellent book!
We used this book as one of our spines for American History this year. I felt it was a bit young for my daughter. She could have handled more substance, but for a younger child, this book could work a lot better.
Excellent general overview of historical events for young children. The historical fiction is captivating and my girls loved this book. Happy to be reading it again to my younger girls.
A great book to use when studying U.S. History. Stories are used to highlight the life then with teaching on occupations or how a household would process a specific product. We used this as part of our homeschool curriculum.
