A year ago, Navy SEAL Travis Nelson left part of himself in the desert—in more ways than one. While they use the word ‘hero’ back home, he sure doesn’t feel like one, watching all his personal relationships turn to ash. When his old friend invites him to Lone Oak Ranch to meet a special dog and a trainer named AJ who might help him find some normal in his life again, he seizes the opportunity to get away the pressure to perform the role he’s been assigned by his family and friends. When AJ turns out not to be the male trainer he expected, but instead Alexis Jane, a woman with a heart of gold and a voluptuous body that reignites a long-dead fire in him, Travis is forced to come to terms with the parts of himself that haven’t healed since he came home. Travis can’t deny himself—and doesn’t want to—but can he make AJ see herself the way he sees her? And will he be able to control the burn without taking her down in the fiery crash he knows comes next?
Amity Lassiter lives in Eastern Canada with her herding dog, her barn cat, two horses and her Mister. She has loved telling stories her entire life and even before she could write could be found in her grandmother’s basement, reciting fiction into an ancient cassette recorder.
The most influential author in Amity’s life would be Peter S. Beagle, the author of The Last Unicorn, who introduced her to her first achingly impossible love story and made her believe in magic. She met, and shared the most surreal small talk with Beagle in May 2014.
She loves critters, coffee, and cowboys – and she still believes in unicorns.
I loved that AJ trains dogs to help people like providing calm in courtrooms and now assisting veterans. Travis has walls up about being thought of as a hero and others feeling sorry for him because he lost his leg that he reinforced when he realized that the person providing him with a support dog is a woman. He was a jerk at first, but his assigned dog Rudy was so cute and kept trying to cuddle up to him. AJ has been through her own PTSD with an ex-fiance who belittled her weight and broke up with her over it. Throughout the book she kept putting herself down because of her size, but that didn’t stop Travis from showing how attracted he was to her. She had confidence working with the dogs, but not as much about herself. This was a steamy cowboy romance.
AJ turns out to be a trainer of dogs that provide comfort and calm to veterans. Travis has left half of his life in the desert and has built up walls so people don't treat him with pity and feel sorry for him. Travis finds that AJ is a women when he goes to pick up his does and he is a complete jerk. Rudy, the dog, has been assigned to Travis and is cute and cuddly and tries to cuddle up to Travis. AJ had been through her own form of PTSD. Travis has a way to go to convince AJ what he's attracted to her as she doesn't have a high opinion of herself. Their chemistry and relationship finally break down the walls that they both have built up. Highly recommend. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Enjoyed this story about emotionally damaged ex Navy Seal Travis and AJ (Alexis Jane) who meet when his friend suggest getting a dog that she trained for emotional support since he left the military and he just can not get back on track. He thinks AJ is a man so he is all onboard until he meets her face to face and finds that he is strongly attracted. AJ is a big curvy girl and was engaged until six months ago when her fiancee told her she "looked good on paper" meaning that she is too big. Travis and AJ did not hit it off but soon found they had much in common. Can Travis and AJ work through their past in order to have a relationship with each other?
I really enjoyed this book. The use of therephy dogs for emotional support for Vets is well represented. The way that Travis felt about his service and the way people wanted to see him and the way he saw himself were such an issue. He just was so overcome he could not move forward, backward or sideways being stuck was an issue that overwhelmed him. . I loved the way the characters interacted. This is a must read.

This is a new author for me and the story spoke to me on so many levels, it drew me in and had me eager to find out what would happen. I really loved the honesty of the characters, they were imperfect and real and I felt a strong connection to them. I loved the honesty of the story too; the real perceptions of society and the way one action can be interpreted in different ways. I would love to read more about AJ and Travis, and their dogs.

I actually really liked how things took a while for Travis to warm up to AJ even thought he was a bit of a douche canoe to her as he wasn't in the mind set to meet and have a women as the dog trainer nor was he expecting he attraction he felt for her. Both AJ and Travis have set backs to over come and even though neither are looking for love time out at Lone Oak Ranch is just what they need. This is a book you enjoy from start to finish and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this new "Hearts of Heroes" story! It's a nicely developed story that is interesting and intriguing. I really love the characters and how their journey develops; definitely a few bumps along the way. Travis came home from service different. Not only did he lose and leg he has built walls up to protect himself. He has gone to get a support dog from a trainer but when he realizes the trainer is a girl things don't go well. AJ trains emotional support dogs and has her on scars. This is a really good story that was very captivating from beginning to end.
AJ was a dog trainer for therapy dogs. Travis was a veteran that lost his leg in combat and was having trouble being called a hero because he was alive and part of his team weren’t because they ran like cowards like they were commanded. He went to his fellow teammate to see about a dog but then developed feelings for AJ. AJ didn’t want to be attracted to Travis but couldn’t deny how he made her feel. This sweet and interesting story takes you on a journey of love between two broken hearts and souls.

This is one of those small town romance books I like reading. Travis had an interesting backstory and meeting Alexis was a surprise, but it was a good one and a surprise he realized he actually needed to help him live his best life.

A small town romance with the ex-SEAL who doesn't know how to move forward. AJ was his perfect solution. She's sweet, feisty, sexy, and understanding. I loved reading this.

I loved this story about an injured vet who was angry with his reactions of being a hero. It was only after Travis meets AJ and gets a support dog, Rudy, that he realises AJ is his person and they fall in love.
