Solomon Walker's formal education started and ended the day he walked miles to the nearest school and was turned away at the door. As an adult, Solomon made sure that his children would have the education that he was denied. Solomon's son, Ron, went on to become a teacher, principal, and award-winning educator - and is the founder and Executive Director of COSEBOC. In his new book, Solomon's Plan: Gift of Education from a Father to His Son, Ron Walker reflects on the ways that education shaped his father's life and his own.
Overview of African American history through the lens of one family. I like the way this is personalized. The clear writing makes it legible at the 2nd or 3rd grade level. Timelines, data charts, and index being included makes this a good resource for classroom use as well.
I really enjoyed this book. This memoir was interspersed with facts about the history of African Americans in the US, especially as it relates to education and work. An easy-to-read history lesson and story about one family's journey.
