Paws For Murder is the first book in the Barking Mad Mysteries by Scarlett English. It was published in January 2020, and I learned about it through a blog tour opportunity with Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. Since it was a first in series, I opted to read and review it. What a fun, easy-to-read, and immersive debut book! Let's get into the review...

Petronella is a veterinarian in a small English town. Garrett is an American cop who gives up his job and moves to England to support his aging grandmother. He's given a senior-ranking police officer job before his arrival, and on his first day in town, he's asked to look into a murder. Little do these two realize, Garrett's nana lives in an attached home with Petronella, the woman accused of killing a dog breeder for being nasty to people and dogs. Things definitely get sticky, but rather than become a trope, this story becomes quite amusing -- they recognize they like one another rather than argue about the murder. Petronella also doesn't do a whole lot of investigating on her end until the end when clues fall into her lap. A great twist on a traditional cozy.

Another fun aspect was the dual POV. Chapters alternate between Garrett's and Petronella's perspective, which is not normal in a cozy series. I rather enjoyed it for the most part. On a couple of occasions, we had a bit of repetition/duplication to a scene, but not a lot. I worry whether it'll be easy for readers to remember which character knows which information, as sometimes I found myself saying... 'wait, she already found out that... oh, never mind, that was Garrett." With a few adjustments, I think this can easily be worked out for the future.

The first half of the story flew by. I couldn't believe I had finished as much as I did in a single setting. It's not overly long, but it's not a short novella either. As we started getting to know the town and the characters, I felt a little detached from overload of info, but that always happens in a first book, as we need time to get comfy with everyone. Minor stuff... it was such a good debut, I definitely recommend it. I loved how the ending was clear but a little shady too... depending on what you want to believe, the murder could've gone down two ways. It was interesting to see how the author navigated this approach, and I found myself curious when someone else died at the end. Who really did it?

I look forward to the next one, and I will definitely stick with this series.

Petronella Knight is a veterinarian in the small village in which she grew up, Adlebury. She finds herself accused of murder after an argument with a client. Garrett has moved to Adlebury to join their police department. He has left behind the crime in Atlanta for what he imagines will be a quiet career. He moves in with his grandmother, Petronella’s neighbor.

This is the first book in the Barking Mad Mystery series. I enjoyed the book and recommend it.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Paws for Murder by Scarlett English is a wonderful mystery, set in a quaint English village, with terrific characters.
If Petronella didn't kill Mrs. Harrington, then who did?
Petronella
Petronella Knight or better know to her clients as Dr. K. is our sleuth. She is also the number one suspect for the murder of Gladys Harrington. Petronella is one of the local veterinarians. However, this is the village that she grew up in, and lots of the people still think of her as the little girl with a learning disability instead of a veterinarian. However, for the most part, Petronella just ignores them, but with Garrett, she seems to have a bit of sass.

Petronella is a fabulous character. I like that she knows when to be quiet and when to speak up. She has a great heart, and her friendship with Lilly is lovely.
Garrett
Garrett O'Leary's mother is from Adlebury, and his father was in the USAF. He left his life as an Atlanta Police Detective to move to England and take care of his Nan (his mom's mother). He took a job as a supervising Constable (or something like that) in the local village.

Garrett is a great character, and I love the way he is there for his grandmother.  He seems like a competent investigator. He will have a hard time keeping his Nan (Lilly) and Petronella out of trouble.
Paws for Murder CRThe Mystery
Well, I thought that the victim deserved what she got, especially after getting to the conclusion. As for the second victim, I also believe he was an idiot using her power for personal gain. I didn't figure out the culprit. But it was fun reading about how we got to this point. The story is told by Petronella and Garrett's points of view. This book is the first cozy that I can think of with two points of view. And I enjoyed getting both of their perspectives.
Four Stars
The story has a marvelous mystery, and I like the characters. Therefore I am giving Paws for Murder by Scarlett English four stars. It's a sweet read; check it out if you have time; it is worth the time.

“Considering both countries were supposed to speak English, it was like a whole other language.“

What a fun series debut this was to read!

Everything from the quaint English village setting to the charmingly befuddled (but sharp! and handsome!) American detective to the plucky veterinarian heroine who makes gooseberry wine to the guard duck named George – it’s endearing and witty and all-around entertaining. The characters are vivid and layered, and I look forward to spending more time with them in future books. I also loved the dual POV that we get in this book – the perspective shifts between Garrett and Petronella so we really feel like we get to know them well by the end of the story. Garrett’s grandmother Lillie – who is also a friend to Petronella – was also a delight to meet on the pages.

The mystery in Paws for Murder is extremely well-written and cleverly plotted. It kept me guessing through the whole book – and with as many mysteries as I read and grew up reading, that’s not easy to do. A host of plausible suspects with even more plausible motives … as well as some unlikely suspects … filter through the investigation, and it takes some surprising turns along the way too.

Bottom Line: Paws for Murder is a delightful read from start to finish and was a fabulous start to what looks to be an equally delightful series. The lovely setting, the engaging characters, the smart plotting, and the witty writing style are strengths of this story, and it’s a quick read overall too. Definitely recommended for fans of cozy and/or British mysteries!

The first book in this new series was so much fun to read. I have really become addicted to cozy mysteries in the last couple of years and this new series will be added to my must buy list.

I am not one of those people that goes into a mystery trying to figure it out before I get to the end, I like to go where the author is trying to lead me and just enjoy the ride. I like the quirky characters and the situations that arise.

The author does a wonderful job introducing the characters and the town in this first installment, so by the end they feel like old friends.

Cute!

This book was cute from the first page to the last. The quaint English village of Adlebury was the perfect setting and all the characters were perfectly fitting. I loved all of the gossip and amateur sleuthing. Ella and Garrett are beyond adorable.

I want more!

The Vet, the American and the Cat

Wonderful read. Gentle, easy but with a style that flows and embraces you in the life of a small village near Newbury. Our FMC is a petite veterinarian who loves all her clients and had to overcome dyslexia. The HMC is an American police officer who upon getting a tongue lashing about his Gran. Resigns, moves to the UK and a new job. The crime, if it was a crime, is the death of a mean spirited dog breeder. Disliked by all who knew her.
His first day in the UK has him attending a scene of a special constable, belligerently hovering over a young woman, a dead body at the bottom of the cellar stairs and the dead woman's son demanding that she be arrested for murder. Watch as he and the vet (the young woman) both investigate the crime but from different angles. Add in steroids, blackmail, a bed ridden grandmother, a dead cat, murder and a small village where everyone knows everything and everyone. Can they find out what happened? Will it all come out or will it just be a hypothetical answer?
Lovely style, loved the way it was so understated but that is what gave it that memorable vibe.

Enjoyable

This story was a surprise read for me. I really enjoyed it. The setting was interesting, being a village in England, the characters well developed, and while I had a pretty strong suspicion of who done it, I enjoyed the journey to the end. The only injection I had was a bit of adult language at the start which did not carry through. I loved the animals, was emotional with some of the cruelty that one of the characters perpetrated and threatened to perpetrate, so that to me shows strength of writing to stir such emotion from the reader. I certainly would read the next book in the series of there is one, which I hope there is.

I love a good twist and i love a good story., This is the best of both. Scarlett English really delivers in this cute little mystery. Petronella has the classic feel of James Herriot, a vet in a country english village. Garrett has a great sense of humor and the struggles with moving from being a big town cop in Atlanta to now working in Adlebury with different policies, procedures and even language and culture. Murder has come to town but the twist of who done it really will knock your paws off.

Not my typical read but I really liked it.

Paws for Murder is the first "cozy mystery" story that I've read. I typically only read romance – anything from sweet to NSFW (not safe for work) – but when I found out that Victoria Sue, one of my favorite authors, was co-writing something totally different from anything I've read by her before, I knew I had to read it. (For those familiar with Victoria Sue's writing please know that this is NOT a gay romance.)

I loved the world building and the characters in the story were fleshed out and interesting. The book really caught my attention, and held it, right from the beginning.

I liked the combination of an American police officer, Garrett, who moved to England to be with his nan (grandmother) and the small, but feisty, English veterinarian, Petronella, who doesn't let her size prevent her from tackling anything. These two don't exactly hit it off right away because Garrett must investigate the murder Ella is suspected of committing.

There were several LOL moments for me in the story. Here's one example of something that Garrett said to himself:

Pearson nodded. “I’ll make sure A and E let us know when they’re going to let him loose.” I paused for a second until my brain translated A and E to Accident and Emergency, or their ER. Considering both countries were supposed to speak English, it was like a whole other language.

Maybe it's because I don't read a lot of mysteries, but I had no idea of who the bad guy was until the author wanted the reader to know. That right there is the mark of a great mystery in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to reading more books in this series.

I borrowed a copy of this book from Kindle Unlimited.

Paws for murder is a very cute book from the first page all the way to the last page. Garrett is very likeable rom the very beginning. I loved how he packed up his whole life and moved to a small village in Adlebury to help care for his grandmother.

I love the relationship between Ella and Garrett grandmother. They have bonded over their love of crime solving and wine drinking.

Ella and Garrett are beyond adorable and I can't wait to see what happens next for them in Probable Paws( The Barking Mad Mysteries Book 2).

Petronella Knight may be young and only 5 foot 3 but don't underestimate her. She's a fully qualified veterinary surgeon in the village of Addlebury in Hampshire, England. She's prepared to handle anything while her boss is out of the office. The one emergency she isn't interested in handling is euthanizing a sweet puppy just for being difficult to train. Yet this is exactly what Mrs. Gladys Harrington wants Petronella to do! No way! Petronella would rather pay 500 pounds to adopt the puppy herself! At lunchtime, Petronella beings the money for Sherlock Bones to Mrs. Harrington's home only to discover the lady lying crumpled at the bottom of the stairs! As Petronella tries to help Gladys, her son Kyle arrives and accuses her of murder. Constable Atkinson is quick to harass her and grill her. Petronella would never commit murder, not even to save a dog's life! How could this be happening to her? Garrett is the grandson of Petronella's neighbor Lily. He's come back to his native England after becoming burned out working as an Atlanta police sergeant in America. After wrapping up a grisly case, he decides to drop everything and move to England to care for his Nan. He is eager for some peace and quiet in an English village. What ever happens there? Famous last words! Garrett is thrust into action his first day in England. A local dog breeder has fallen down the stairs and another local woman is accused of murder. Garrett wasn't prepared for how beautiful Petronella is but for some reason, she takes him into dislike! She's spunky and prickly but he's certain she didn't commit murder. He doesn't think anyone did but he'll investigate anyway, just to prove Ella is innocent.

This was really cute. While I managed to figure out whodunit, I hoped I was wrong. I didn't think that was possible. There was sometimes a bit TMI about the animals, especially the farm animals and the llama birthing scene. Garett handled that like a trooper! I'd say "You want me to put my arm WHERE?! DO WHAT?!" The dual point-of-view was interesting but a bit repetitive. I had a hard time distinguishing between British voice and American. I was under the impression police procedures were different in England but I guess not.

I enjoyed all the quirky characters in this village. I relate a lot to Petronella, being short. I don't like being called "honey" or "sweetie." Petronella is strong, smart and independent. She's overcome dyslexia to graduate with honors from veterinary college, something I couldn't do, and become a modern-day female James Herriot! Some of her pet parents and their furbabies reminded me a lot of James Herriot's stories and I have no doubt they're all true! Lily is Petronella's best friend. Lily is normally spunky and lively with a strong sense of curiosity but since the deaths of her daughter and son-in-law, she's been broken and alone. I felt so badly for her. She's let her home fall apart or perhaps doesn't have the money to fix it. Garrett's arrival and given her a new lease on life. He did the right thing. Garrett is a kind, honorable man. He hints at the grisly things he saw in Atlanta and I don't blame him for being burned out. That once case would be enough to give me nightmares forever. An English village sounds appealing. Garrett never once considers Petronella a suspect and he doesn't care for the pompous local constable. I really liked him but I didn't like how much he dwelled on Petronella's looks. Yes, she's short, move on! Compliment her intelligence, her calm handling of a veterinary emergency, her lack of squeamishness, ANYTHING but her looks! Other than that, he's a good guy.

Not so good was Gladys Harrington. She was a nasty piece of work. I wouldn't be surprised if someone did murder her. She has numerous enemies. There's Petronella, Katie and Mrs. Babbington who all heard Gladys ask for a sweet furbaby to be "put down." Then there's the PETA type folks who don't believe in dog breeding and fancy dog shows. There's also everyone else in the village who hates that her mother-in-law, Rose, is elderly, bedridden and living in a dilapidated cottage with no help from Gladys. Her death doesn't seem suspicious unless she was pushed. I would bet my money on her son Kyle. He also seems like a nasty sort and doesn't take care of his grandmother, in spite of owning several successful gyms and a farm. Yet, something happens that makes me think he may actually be naturally upset at his mother's death and in his grief, too quick to accuse Petronella. I still get a nasty vibe from him. Constable Atkinson is a conceited, pompous blowhard who wouldn't know a murder suspect if he stumbled across one. No wonder they need real police in this village. I'm not sure about Kyle's old coach, David Readman. Is he really telling the truth about what happened? I don't get a strong trustworthy vibe from him.

Rose Harrington is a sweet little old lady. She's a bit of a crazy cat lady but her babies bring her comfort because she's mostly bedridden. Her attachment to Susie warmed my heart and made me cry. Dr. Hainsworth is a good man. He respects Petronella's abilities and is happy to let her take over someday soon. He's fair and not judgmental and I liked how he wouldn't allow himself to be bullied by Mrs. Harrington. Detective Pearson, Garrett's new partner, is also fair. He has a sense of humor too and that's important when working in this crazy little village. Mr. and Mrs. Hislop seem nice enough. He must really appreciate having another vet in the village for emergencies but he doesn't truly express enough gratitude for Petronella's assistance in the emergency. He's now fast friends with Garrett though! I think he's a little paranoid. Who would steal a llama? Apparently someone did, or so they say. Weird. Maisie, Petronella's best friend closer to her own age, is loyal. She's also a spitfire and not afraid to tell it like it is. I really like her for calling Garrett and telling him in no uncertain terms to get his butt to England and take care of his nan. I have a feeling Maisie and Petronella could get into some mischief together but we don't see enough of them together in this first novel.

I am majorly in love with all the zany animal scenes in this book. There's George, a guard duck, who cohabitates with Maisie, the pub owner's daughter and Lily. It's even funnier when we meet his namesake. Sophia, the spoiled, spaghetti-eating Abyssinian cat made me laugh and cringe (TMI). Hands-down, the funniest, wackiest scene was with Tiny and Duchess Angelica. I LOLd a lot! I know this happens and the people should have let it happen and not tried to stop it. Oh boy! I am eager to find out what happens next with this um lovely couple! I had no interest at all in learning how llams give birth and ensuing complications- TMI take two!

I really want to read more about Addlebury and the wacky animal population! This is one of the better Kindle Unlimited cozy mystery offerings.

Oh my gosh,,,I loved this story and absolutely adored Petronella the vet! I am a huge animal lover especially dogs and just everything about Paws for Murder was enjoyed by me. I know it is so awful of me to say but I didn't feel any sympathy or one bit of sadness when that nasty Mrs Harrington was found dead! I despised her! What a mean and greedy character! It didn't take any time before i breezed thru this cozy! It was so very good!

I got a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Surprise ending!

Great characters, both human and animal. Smooth read with an overall upbeat feel.

Paws for Murder takes place in a small village in England. It has all the characteristics of one as well. Everyone knows your business, your strengths, weaknesses, every mistake, public humiliation, and so forth. They are also there if you need help, someone to watch over you... You get my meaning. You've got good people and bad. But murder? Not in their small little village.

The author kept me guessing as to who did what, why, and how. All while introducing me to some unique souls that I couldn't help falling in love with. Just wait to you find out who George the guard duck was named after.

A couple of times I thought I knew who the culprit or culprits were, but a few twists and turns jept me guessing until the end.

Overall it was a diverting read and I look forward to reading more by this author.

Paws for Murder is the first book in a new series by Scarlett English. A young, local veterinarian is having a difficult time with some of the other locals. She's a capable and competent vet but some villagers refuse to accept her. When one resident, a local Sheepdog breeder, comes to the clinic on a day she thought the original vet worked and discovers it "only" Petronella, she proceeds to verbally assault Ella. Later, when Ella goes to the woman's home to pay for a dog the breeder was going to have put down, Ella finds her dead. Ella then finds herself on the opposite side of the law when a constable accuses her of murder. It's a good thing for Ella that a new American police officer's first day on the job brings him to the scene of the grisly murder. Now, Ella, with help of her friends and the American cop, must try and figure out who would want the woman dead.

Paws for Murder is a wonderfully written cozy mystery. I enjoyed the characters, the character development, and the world building. I was able to connect to Ella, who is friendly, compassionate, and smart. The fact that some characters in this book find her sub-par boggles the mind. The book is fast-paced (but not too fast), never dull or slow. The points-of-view in the book alternate allowing the reader inside the minds or more than one character. Knowing Ella's thoughts and Garrett's thoughts gave the book a nice feel.

If you are looking for an amusing, cute, quick read with lovable characters, a terrific plot, and a story that doesn't give away the suspect, I highly recommend Paws for Murder.

This was so much fun. A mix of British gentle mysteries and American cozy mystery reads.
Garrett has had enough of his job as a US detective. He is looking forward to a quiet post and unadventurous lifestyle taking care of his grandmother in a small English village.
Before he can introduce himself he is knee deep in a murder case.

Told from alternating points of view, both under stress, we follow along as Garrett meets Petronella, the local vet, albeit a young woman who is still trying to prove herself to the older residents who have watched her grow up. Whether at a murder scene or at a dog show brawl, Petronella seems to be in the thick of the action.

Will Garrett get to enjoy his dreamed of quieter lifestyle or will life continue to be unpredictable as he gets to know his new neighbors better, we will have to wait until the next book to find out.
This first of what I hope is a rolicking series, is very exciting.

A nice gentle start to a new series, also nice and short so ideal for commutes!

Dr Petronella Knight is not having the best of Mondays when a local dog breeder comes into the veterinary surgery demanding that a perfectly healthy dog is put down, because he is a runt! Petronella says that she will take him and which point Gladys Harrington says that will cost her £500, Petronella agrees and says she will drop the money off later, when she arrives at the farm though she find unhappy English Sheepdogs and a dead Gladys! Within minutes the local special police officer is trying to arrest her for murder, but luckily her next door neighbour's grandson (who has just arrived from the US and is taking up the role of local liason with the special constables) decides that arresting her is not going to happen, at this point the fun (literally and figuratively!) starts and the giggles kick in!

Such fun!

I really loved this fun mystery! Living in a tiny village myself the idea the neighbours know what you had for breakfast before you do is so true! And in this, allegedly fictional, village the grapevine is well oiled!! I loved that it managed to be quintessentially English and wonderfully confusing for the poor American whilst still being modern and fresh. I had several theories regarding the "goings on". All completely wrong! And loved all the animals, including a guard duck and randy dog/donkey :-D This is a fab read for an afternoon on the sofa with a pot of tea and some homemade biscuits

Set in a quaint English village, this mystery has all of the elements of the typical cozy mystery – including a likable amateur sleuth, a charming detective, and a victim that is hard not to dislike. And animals. Lots of animals. Petronella is a vet and we are treated to a glimpse into all that goes with that job alongside her efforts to prove her innocence and identify the killer. The main characters are well developed and the plot moved along at a nice pace, with interesting developments as the story unfolded. With a sprinkling of humor and a healthy dose of romantic suspense, Paws for Murder makes a delightful start to a new cozy mystery series.

A perfect cozy mystery

Paws for murder is the first book by Scarlett English in The Barking Mad Mysteries. I really enjoyed the storyline and characters. A small town where everybody knows everyone and their business. A murder has everyone pointing fingers at the young vet in town Ella. Thankfully she has the new very attractive American policeman on her side. Fall in love with the village of Adlebury and the great cast of characters.

This book was super fun. The writing had a lot of humor and colorful scenes, with quite a few making me actually laugh out loud. The mystery was done well, and I applaud the direction the co-authors took to make the resolution more unique. The very end held a little too many convenient coincidences for my taste, but did not detract from my enjoyment of the book as a whole. Between the twists and the charming characters, I'll definitely be reading more in this series.

I absolutely adored Paws for Murder! It has all of the elements that I love in a cozy mystery book: humor, great characters, animals, and squeaky clean content. I’ve given it 4.5 stars rather than 5 only because of a couple of cases of inconsistency….one pretty big one in the epilogue. I read the section several times to make sure I didn’t miss something, but I didn’t. So I had to take a half star away for that.

Paws for Murder is a very quick read. You’re not going to want to put it down. Despite the fact that it’s a quick read, you’ll be totally invested in the lives of these characters. They’re well-developed and jump off the page at you. I love the small English village setting as well as the fact that a former American detective moves there to be with his grandma. I sure do miss my grandma! Since Petronella (Ella to the detective) is his grandma’s neighbor, I’m sure a romance will develop between the two. That’s fine with me as long as the romance doesn’t overshadow the mysteries! I enjoy reading cozies with no romance in them too. However, I do like these two characters a lot, so I am fine with a romance between them.

I definitely recommend Paws for Murder. It’s a fun, quick, quirky cozy mystery that will leave you ready for the next book! This book is FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

So, first of all, I absolutely love cozy mysteries but I find it hard to find a true cozy mystery. Well, the search is over. This one has everything that I look for and more. We have the lovely Petronella (that is one name that will stick with you) who finds herself embroiled in a murder and Garrett, the American detective that is still adjusting to life in an English village. Add in their interactions and you have everything possible you would want in a cozy mystery. I can't wait for more.
