Dog-loving divorcée and amateur sleuth Lilly Echosby is not the only one who wants her new foster poodle. Some are willing to kill to have him . . .
Lilly's best pal Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson has done it again! She’s convinced eccentric poodle-loving billionaire Archibald Lowry to sponsor a grand fundraiser for the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue. Tragically, it’s too late to rescue Lowry, who is murdered at the event. His pet poodle is now orphaned, so Dixie begs Lilly to foster the adorable pup. Of course, she already has a poodle—her beloved Aggie, named after Agatha Christie. Fortunately, Aggie seems to like the new addition to the family, whom Lilly renames Rex, after her second favorite mystery author, Rex Stout.
But she’s barely welcomed Rex into her home when there’s an attempted poodle-nabbing, foiled with Aggie’s help. As desperate characters try to get their hands on the canine cutie, Lilly turns to Dixie’s dog training class to help her sort through a litter of suspects. Ultimately, she may have to unleash Rex as bait to collar the killer . . .

This is a cozy Mystery, and it is the 4th book in A Dog Club Mystery series. This is also the first book in the series I have read. I really enjoyed this book. The main character Lilly is so great, and the dogs during more to the book. The mystery was good. I won a kindle edition of this book from a Goodreads giveaway, but this review is 100% my own opinion and a honest review of the book.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Net Galley and Kensington Books in return for an honest review. The release date for this book was 11 Aug 2020
This is a cute cozy mystery series - but I guess I am biased in the fact that this book deals a lot with poodles and I am already hooked on another series involving these lovable dogs and I just couldn’t help comparing the two. This book just couldn’t hold a candle to the other series. It’s entertaining enough, it just doesn’t have the extra flare I like. It’s a fast flowing read and I’m sure most readers will ultimately enjoy it.
Paw and Order by V.M. Burns is the fourth book in her Dog Club series and was the best one yet.
Every time I begin a book by Ms. Burns I feel like I have stepped into the world of old friends. Lilly, Dixie, Stephanie, Red and Joe have all become "real" to me and I am so glad to be in this comfortable world again. This time Lilly has two murders to solve with only a few suspects. There is trouble with Stephanie and Joe's relationship but Lilly's determined to stay on the sidelines while they work it out. The pace of the story is perfect with descriptive details that just make me feel right at home and rooting for Lilly and the Dog Club members to solve the mystery.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Lyrical Press via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
I’m always thrilled to find a new story in one of my favorite pet cozy series! It’s not often—more like never before—that Lilly Ann Echosby finds a tiny silver poodle with bloody paw prints that lead straight to it’s murdered owner! I immediately fell in love with the (now) orphaned male poodle, Indulf aka Rex, who becomes fast friends with Lilly’s female toy poodle, Aggie. The plot plunges into action as someone tries to dognap tiny Rex who Lilly is fostering until someone decides where his forever home will be.
With best friend, Dixie, and attorney daughter, Stephanie by her side, Lilly is close on the trail of the killer and determined to protect Rex’s rights, also. Author V.M. Burns pens a lively tale of greed and corruption, and blends humor and compassion into scenes to provide a satisfying mystery and a story pet lover’s will enjoy!
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington. Thank you.
When poodle-loving billionaire Archibald lowry is murdered at an event he is sponsoring for the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue at Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson’s request Lily Echosby finds herself fostering the billionaire’s pooch while trying to catch his killer.
Friendship blooms within these pages, Lily and Dixie are women I would love to hang out with in real life. They always have each other’s back and their love for their canine companions is heartwarming. Lily and Red’s relationship is evolving nicely. Lily’s daughter Stephanie comes for a visit, there is a little tension in her relationship with Joe and she needs a little TLC from mom. Her mom may need her for some advice as well. I enjoyed the way Dixie’s training group gets involved in all the chaos. All the characters are well-developed with plenty of room left to grow.
The story has an excellent flow with action ratcheting up in all the right places. There are several suspects and different events for them to be observed and questioned. Well-crafted twists kept me guessing right up until the very end. I continue to be amazed by Ms. Burns tells such a great story in less than 200 pages, especially with her wonderfully descriptive writing style.
Paw and Order is a delightful cozy mystery that I enjoyed start to finish. Engaging characters, precious poodles, a great mystery, with a touch of romance and a nice amount of humor make this story a perfect escape.
While this book can be read on its own for maximum enjoyment I recommend reading them all in order.
I just love this series! Paw and Order, the fourth book in V.M. Burns’ Dog Club Mystery series, is a fun, quick, and entertaining story that is perfect for a lazy afternoon. At only 168 (kindle) pages, it is nonetheless full of fast-paced action, wit, humor, friendship, cute dogs, and yes . . . murder! Ms. Burns makes every word count in this delightful cozy mystery.
Lilly Ann Echosby and her best friend Dixie Jefferson are hosting a fundraiser on behalf of the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue Association at the Chattanooga Museum when one of the charity’s most generous benefactors, Archibald Lowry, is murdered, leaving behind a toy poodle with an unpronounceable name. Lilly is prevailed upon to foster the abandoned dog (who she renames “Rex” as in Rex Stout), however, she gets more trouble than she bargains for. In quick succession, Lowry’s distant relatives offer an absurd amount of money for Rex, a second murder takes place, and there is an attempted dognapping. Lilly and her boyfriend, TBI officer Rex Olson, must find the perpetrator before anyone else gets hurt.
What I love most about this book are the characters. Lilly and her best friend, Dixie, are as close as sisters. Lilly’s daughter Stephanie is a multi-faceted person with real-world problems. Red is suave and charming, and the perfect counterpart for Lilly. And of course, the dogs! Aggie, Rex, Chyna, Leia, Lucky, and Turbo are so precious! It’s really a plus that Ms. Burns is able to weave so many different themes – ranging from trusts and estates law to dog agility --into the story.
Fast-paced and well-written, Paw and Order is a gem of a story. If you love dogs and deftly-plotted cozy mysteries, this is the book for you!
Note: I received an ARC of Paw and Order from NetGalley and Kensington Books. The above is my honest review.
This is my completely biased review for Paw and Order. :-) Seriously, if you like cozy mysteries and dogs, then I think you will enjoy this book, too. Every book in this series features a different breed of dog.

Review:
The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. I so enjoy the relationship between Lilly and Dixie, her best friend. They are always ready for a good time, but they can be serious if need be. They are known to track down killers when it is necessary, and unfortunately it is needed now. I enjoyed getting to spend time with Lilly’s daughter and Red, Lilly's boyfriend.
The mystery is well plotted and there were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider. I did not know for sure who the killer was until the reveal at the end.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and it helped bring the book to life in my mind.
I would highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. I cannot wait to see what happens next with Lilly and her friends.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Paws And Order is the fourth book in the A Dog Club Mystery series.
Lily Echosby’s best friend Dixie is heading up the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue Association fundraiser and has asked Lily to help at the gala event at The Chattanooga Museum. The event’s Guest of Honor is recluse and millionaire Archibald Lowry. As the guests are arriving, Lily sees a man who appears to be a homeless person and she goes in search of Dixie, but it turns out to be Lowry. A short time later Lily hears a lady screaming and runs toward the scream. When Lily arrives she finds Lowry has been stabbed and is dead. Dixie asks Lily to take Lowry’s puppy, Indulf, while the police do their investigation. While the police investigate, Dixie and Lily, discuss tomorrow events. There was to be a silent auction and dog trials at Lowry’s estate. They decide that Lowry would want them to go on as planned. Before the police release everyone, an attempt is made to steal Indulf.
The next day Dixie’s dog club members have been assembled and are putting their dogs through various examples of dog training. The silent auction is doing well. But there have been a couple more attempts to steal Lowry’s dog, who Lily has renamed Rex. But then, there was also another murder, one of Lowry’s employees has met an early demise.
Lily begins to wonder if the attempts to steal Rex have anything to do with the deaths that have recently occurred. Lily, Dixie, and the members of Dixie’s dog club will put their heads together to help the police with their investigation.
The romance continues to blossom for Lily and Red, but maybe not so much for her daughter Stephanie. Stephanie and her boyfriend have come across a few bumps in the road and she has decided some time away might help. It’s difficult for Lily not to offer advice, but it’s nice to have Stephanie around to help find the murderer.
The book is well-written and plotted with an interesting cast of developed and believable characters. I particularly enjoyed reading about the interaction of pups as they frolic with each other and as they are put through their paces in the trials.
I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this great series.
I think this is my favorite so far of the series! It was just that awesome. From Lilly and Red's growing relationship to a little side story about her daughter Stephanie her boyfriend Joe to the dog club friends working together as always to solve a murder. I always love how they get together and have their assignments of people to talk to. It makes me feel better that the main character isn't always on her own.
I just wanted to cuddle and kiss that sweet little puppy Rex! I could just picture him and how cute he was--and what a good little sweetheart Aggie was being! Lilly always worried about her behavior and obedience in the past, but Aggie knew when to come through. Gotta admit, at the showdown something so sweet happened that my eyes just had to leak from being happy about it. I was pretty sure about the person who was doing the killing, but there was a good twist and definitely plenty of suspects! I'm never disappointed in this author's books. She really writes an amazing mystery that makes me want to keep reading.
Disclosure: I did win a Kindle copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway, but that in no way affected my review. I would have pre-ordered the book or bought it eventually, and my review would have been essentially the same. Even though it's not out until August 11, I couldn't resist reading it now. I can't wait for the next one!
After I finish reading a Dog Club Mystery, or any other of the author's series, I find myself with a range of emotions - happy for reading such a wonderful book, sad since I have no other mystery of hers to read and hopeful because I know another book will be coming! Paw and Order evoked such feelings. A new "man" comes into Lilly's life in the form of a lovable poodle named Rex. The problem is someone may be willing to kill to get their hands on Rex and his murdered owners fortune. Lilly and company are on the case to make sure this doesn't happen!
Each of the characters in the series is so well-written that any could have a series of their own. Dixie, the feisty dog trainer, Stephanie (Lilly's daughter who is an attorney), Red (Lilly's boyfriend) and the other "team" members work together beautifully. It's wonderful to read a book that has diverse characters. All of the characters are relatable and believable. The romantic and humorous touches in the book enhance the story without overshadowing the mystery. A perfect book!
I'm hopeful and ready for the next mystery!
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed are my own.
When an eccentric billionaire is murdered at a fundraiser for a poodle rescue group, Lilly agrees to foster his adorable miniature poodle puppy who is now orphaned. Lilly renames the puppy Rex (after Rex Stout), and all is going well with Rex fitting in with Lilly's other poodle, Aggie (after Agatha Christie), and the other dogs in their dog training class. But almost immediately Rex is the subject of an attempted puppy-napping, and it's clear someone seems to really want this dog. The members of the dog training class jump in to help, both with finding the would-be kidnapper and the killer.
Paw and Order is a wonderful, sweet cozy mystery. Lilly's family and friends are supportive, fun and engaging. I loved all the dog-related action and events. Paw and Order is part of a series but I think you can begin here if you choose.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own. #PawAndOrder
Lilly and Dixie are wonderfully creative loveable characters that readers enjoy more and more with every new book. Their pets hold your heart and keep things interesting, and now Lilly has added a new little four-footed bundle to the mix. Paw And Order delight and entertains.
When someone kills Archibald Lowry at a fundraiser that involves Lilly and Dixie, they can't stop themselves from investigating. Suspects seem to come out of the woodwork, and even Dixie might be on the list. Lilly takes over the care of Archibald's beloved pet. It looks like she may have taken on more than she could chew. After several attempts by someone to steal the small dog, Lilly's realizes that she can't let him go, and has to find out who is trying to dognap her new fur baby.
There are plenty of red herrings in this animal/pet cozy story. Characters are likable and exciting, with enough quirks to make readers smile and laugh. The pets, mostly poodles, will have you wanting to cuddle with your adorable pup or kitten or wanting to get one of your own to love. The evidence leads straight to the murderer, but not everyone will guess precisely what happened, who did what, or why until the end.
Lilly has several suspects on the run and comes up with a plan to catch a killer. The plan doesn't go quite the way she had hoped, but in the end, the killer is caught, and Lilly's new pet, Rex, is safe and sound. The cast of returning characters and animals in this book brings interest, action, and moral support. The location is a setting built for mystery, murder, and dogs. Readers will be thrilled with the plot, the writing, and the ending. I am happy to recommend Paw And Order.
Paw and Order by V. M. Burns is the 4th book in the Dog Club Mystery, and another wonderful addition. I have enjoyed this author's Mystery Bookshop series, and the other books in Dog Club Mystery series. Ms. Burns is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Lilly Echosby move to Florida after her husband left her. Lilly's has a toy poodle is named Agatha Christie, and she can be a handful. Good thing Lilly best friend, Dixie, trains dogs. During a fundraiser for poodles, billionaire Archibald Lowry is killed leaving behind his beloved poodle. Dixie talks Lillly into taking the dog and fostering him. There is so much going on in this book, between her friends, her work place, her boyfriend, and the murder, you just can't be bored by this book. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love cozy and fun mysteries, I strongly recommend this book/series. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
When Lilly Echosby meets Archibald Lowry at a fundraiser run by her friend Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson, she thinks he is eccentric to say the least. Still, she is shocked when he is murdered at the fundraiser. Dixie convinces Lilly to foster Lowry’s pet poodle (whom Lilly renames Rex) and Lily soon grows quite fond of the dog. So when someone seems bound and determined to kidnap Rex, Lilly vows to do everything she can to protect him but will that involve confronting a killer?
While “Paw and Order” is the fourth book in V.M. Burns Dog Club cozy mystery series, it is the first book in the series that I have read but it certainly will not be my last. I loved everything about the book starting with the characters – Lilly, her boyfriend Red, her best friend Dixie, her daughter Stephanie, and all of the supporting characters. I also love all the dogs in the book – they play an important part in the mystery. Speaking of the mystery – I did figure out a few plot points – some very early on – but I was still taken aback by some of the plot twists. All in all well done.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters, they're colorful and kind to each other especially the dogs. The dogs are great also. The book is well paced without any slow spots. The investigating is well done and the reveal is exciting with all the characters involved. PawandOrder #NetGalley
This is a new author to me and I had so much fun reading this story! It is book 4 of a series, but I didn’t feel lost. The pup and the characters are funny and delightful. Thanks to Kensington Publishing for an ebook ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Paw and Order is the fourth book in V.M. Burns’ Dog Club Mystery series. The storyline is well plotted, and the well-developed characters are affable. The story flows at a steady pace, with humorous moments, and an interesting mystery with enough twists and red herrings to keep the reader engaged and guessing. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys reading a well-crafted cozy mystery.
Lilly Ann Echosby and her toy poodle, Aggie, are settling into their new life after deciding it was time for a fresh start and moving from Lighthouse Dunes, Indiana to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where her best friend since college, Scarlett “Dixie” Jefferson, a dog trainer and dog show judge, lives with her husband, Beau, and two champion standard poodles. Lilly loves her job as a temporary accountant at the Chattanooga Museum of Art and is dating Dennis “Red” Olson, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigations Officer. She has two adult children, Stephanie, a lawyer in Chicago who is dating Joe Harrison, a K-9 handler for the Lighthouse Dunes, Indiana police force, and David, a successful actor who lives in New York. Lily’s boss, Linda Kay Weyman, the museum’s executive director, agreed to host a fundraiser for the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue Association’s fundraiser. When Archibald Lowry, a reclusive eccentric billionaire, is murdered at the fundraiser, Lilly agrees to foster his adorable toy poodle puppy, Indulf, who she renames Rex. Red knows he can’t stop Lily from getting involved with the investigation, so instead of telling her not to, he cautions her to be careful. Lilly, Dixie, Stephanie, and the members of one of Dixie’s training classes look into the death. Rex becomes the subject of an attempted dognapping, and two of A’s relatives try to buy him from Lilly. Stephanie and Joe are having some problems, so she and her golden retriever decide to spend a week with her mom. Joe and Turbo, his K-9 partner, make the trip to Chattanooga and help Red with his investigation.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
Paw and Order - A Dog Club Mystery // by V.M. Burns
Lillie Ann Echosby is enjoying her quiet life in Chattanooga, Tn, and is excited to be hosting an important event for a poodle rescue at the museum where she works. After the shocking discovery of a murder, she is asked to foster the victim's poodle puppy, which she hesitantly agrees to. Of course, she falls head over heels in love with the little one and quickly adopts the adorable pup, renaming him after a favorite book character of hers - Rex. After several failed attempts of kidnapping of little Rex, Lillie becomes suspicious and starts to investigate the murder herself with the help of her dog club friends.
Paw and Order by V.M. Burns is a cute cozy mystery set in Chattanooga, Tn, an area I enjoy having in my books because it always gives me a cozy, homey feel. Lillie is a likable character with a supportive friend group that instantly makes you want to be a part of it too. While parts of the story bothered me a little (like a coroner giving them information about a murder, which should be confidential at least during the investigation), if you look past those little things, this was a really cute story that also included little bits of dog-related advice that can help dog owners in real life. I have personally not read many mysteries yet but this did make me want to dive in a little more into the genre.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
With this being the 4th book in the Dog Club Mystery series, I was expecting a fun story, but this one was the best so far. In this story, Dixie has arranged a fundraiser for the Eastern Tennessee Poodle Rescue, and has convinced eccentric billionaire Archibald Lowry to sponsor it. He is also considering the rescue as a beneficiary of his estate when he dies as he has not children. When he is killed at the fundraiser, things get shutdown. As his will is shared, it becomes confusing as to who is responsible for his death and is this the real will??
I love both Dixie and Lilly. They are strong and independent women so love dogs, a lot. Lilly takes on Archibald's little poodle, who she renames Rex until the will is probated and his ownership is cleared up. I love the dogs in these books. They are smart, they are fearless, they are loved and they often help to solve the crime. Once again, Lilly's daughter Stephanie also makes an appearance, but is having man troubles. She is not sure about her relationship with Joe and takes up with a smooth talking, handsome lawyer in this one. Lilly and Red's relationship continues to grow and I enjoy seeing this development to the series. They do work well together, even though it is reluctantly as Lilly doesn't listen to him. I was pretty sure who was doing the killing, but there was a good twist that had me questioning myself. The motive was awesome. I'm never disappointed with V.M. Burns books. Her plot, character development and humour are all well developed and will keep any cozy mystery lover happy. I listened to the audiobook of this one, narrated by Madison Vaughn. She has narrated all the books in this series and has given voice to Lilly, Dixie and the other characters that I have grown to know and love. With her tone and expression, I enjoyed her performance. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of PAW AND ORDER (Book 4 of the Dog Club Mysteries) by V.M. Burns in exchange for an honest review. Lilly Ann Echosby feels like she has almost adjusted to being the owner of Aggie, one little poodle with a huge personality, and to being an active member of a dog club. When a wealthy benefactor is found dead at a fundraiser, his little poodle puppy is left homeless. Lilly, being of soft and squishy heart, ends up taking the wee beastie home and renaming him Rex. Soon, mysterious figures repeatedly attempt to steal little Rex while the man’s never-before-seen relatives hound Lilly for ownership. This raises Lilly’s hackles; now, neither she nor Aggie will rest until they sniff out the truth and make their newest pack member safe.
I liked this book and enjoy the series. I recommend this book to fans of the series, to fans of V.M. Burns, and to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, dogs, dog clubs, dog events, new beginnings, adult children, and mature sleuths.
Book number four in the series does not disappoint! This series has grown to become one of my favorites. Lilly and the gang return in this latest offering and it was even better than I expected. The characters are easily some of my favorites to read about. The whodunit had me hooked from the beginning and I did not want to put this book down. One of my top five mysteries this year. I highly recommend this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
4 stars Paw and Order by V.M. Burns This is such a great book. I love how Ms. Burns deftly writes characters who are real, entertaining and so incredibly likable. Each book in this series just keeps getting better. The Chattanooga setting is so fun too! The mystery was easy to figure out who did it but the reason they did it was a surprise! I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is truly a cozy mystery with no sex or swearing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The views given are my own.
I am a new reader to this series and I really enjoyed this story. Lily, Dixie and company make for enjoyable characters and I think Ms. Burns did a wonderful job with keeping you guessing about the murder. Great twist! My only peeve has nothing to do with the author. The story deals with Dixie raising money for a poodle rescue. Lily owns a poodle and fosters another in this tale. So why use another breed of dog on the cover? Publishers, please stop ignoring what is between the pages!
I received this ebook for my fair and honest review. I loved this book! I haven’t read the previous books in this series but the author did such a good job that I was able to jump right in and enjoy the book. The character development was very well done and the world building was excellent. I will be reading everything by this author!
I enjoy this series so much! The characters are interesting, and the mysteries always keep me guessing until the end. Plus there's poodles and it's set in my home town, Chattanooga. I highly recommend this book and the series.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
Fun, interesting and keeps you reading. An involved crime with the entire crew working on it in their own ways. Lovely relationships, dogs and Dixie is a hoot Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc
I like this series and this volume lived up to my expectations. Stories about dog owners and dog shows provide a lot of enjoyment. More please VM Burns!
Just reread this terrific installment! What a pleasure.
