4☆ A Festive Romp that mixes Christmas with Dark Comedy Horror! I Loved It!

Candy Canes and Buckets of Blood is a Cheeky, Fun, Festive Romp that mixes humour, Christmas and comedy horror.

Esther and Dave have decided it's time their kids meet for the first time, and what better time to do it than Christmas.

So Esther and her sixteen year old Son Newton travel up to stay with Dave and his Eleven year old Daughter Guin.
Things are a little frosty between the two kids, but Newton is determined to get Guin to like him, for his mum's sake.

First stop is a Christmas market. But things don't quiet go according to plan, with disastrous consequences when Guin goes missing, and danger is lurking at every corner in the form of bloodthirsty Murderous Elves lol

But can the four of them pull together and survive the horror that is unfolding around them?

I really liked the dynamics of the characters.
I particularly liked Guin and Newton, they were both very unique, complex and quirky, perfect for the story.

I didn't really like the start I felt like there was something missing, if I hadn't known it was a first book in a series I might of thought it was a continuation.
However after the first two chapters I became fully absorbed in this crazy, rollercoaster blood fest.

This book is definitely a Christmas Read with a twist.
There's oodles of blood, gore, violence, suspense, wit, and plenty of madcap humour.
It's a fast paced read, that will have you laughing out loud and jumping in all the right places.
A Must Read, if your looking for a Unique Christmas Read!

Thank you to Kelly at Love Book Group Tours for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I have to admit I had no idea what I was getting into when I agreed to review this book and sometimes I like it that way. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be written for children, adults, in a humorous way and seriously bloodthirsty way. It was all a bit of a mystery!

What I now know is That this is a Christmas cracker of a book. It has to be the most quirky, crazy book I have ever read in my life and it’s absolutely fantastic.

The characters are really well developed in a short space of time and as a reader you really feel like you know them. They are all very different and have their own flaws and quirks. Esther is an eco-warrior, activist and feminist but also a bit of a prude. She is visiting her boyfriend Dave with her son Newton who is lovely and gentle but terrified of letting anybody down. Dave is a straight-talking paramedic and just likes to keep the peace and enjoy a drink and his daughter Guin is a studious book worm who seeks company and solace in her selection of ‘junk model’ friends.

Brought together for the first time, the two families are pleasant but the situation is really awkward. It becomes more awkward when they are held hostage in a strange B and B by a bunch of murderous and blood thirsty elves. It’s delightful to follow the development of their characters and relationships throughout the book and I loved every one of them by the end.

The story does contain some very interesting ways to defend yourself against blood-thirsty elves and is by no means suitable for younger children however the horror aspect is light and very tongue in cheek. The chapters are short making it easy to pick up and put down if you only have short reading periods and the story is so enjoyable you just kind of become lost in it.

If you’re looking for something completely different this festive period I highly recommend this book.

Krampus would be embarrassed. It's that good

If you're familiar with Oddjobs or Clovenhoof, this won't be too much of a shock.

It starts off all lulling and sweet... but the creep factor ratchets up fast, and next thing I knew, I was checking the title and realizing that, yup, I had been given fair warning and I could either jump on this weird, wild ride or drop it and... I dunno... switch on Oddjobs.

I'm very glad I hung on. The characters leaped off the page and took over, rearranging reality in the internally-consistent delirium these two writers specialize in.

It was a bit bloody and gruesome in spots (caveat emptor) but that was just what I needed today.

Tremendous fun. That said, I will never view an English country town Christmas fair the same way, ever again. Have fun!

An enjoyable festive murderous elf romp. It's not every day you get to say that.

This was quick to get into and the authors did a great job of layering the characters with a short time frame to operate in.

I found this more amusing and didn't quite have the amount of belly laughs of some of their previous books, but it was still a crackling read!

Well worth a Sunday afternoon

Great laughable one liners and plenty to keep the pages turning. Thoroughly enjoyed this dark comedy. I gave the book 5 stars because it is a good read but the editing had quite a few continuity issues and some places I had to reread several times to make sure I got what was going on.

Utterly bonkers. Totally brilliant. Definitely creepy. With a generous sprinkling of comedy thrown in. I couldn't stop reading! I think my head needs a rest after that haha

It's Christmas time and that means it's time for Dave and Esther to let their kids meet each other for the first time.
This entails meeting up at the local Christmas market it's a little awkward but that is nothing compared to what is about to be unleashed on the little village.
Murderous elves have taken over the market and they are out for human blood.
Suddenly this blended family are closer than they ever thought, they are locked together in a deadly fight for survival against the elves who stole Christmas.
Omg I read this with my niece, at times we were howling with laughter, this was the best festive book I've read so far this year.
Horror, comedy, fantasy and Christmas, what more can a reader ask for?
Great fun and bought the rest in the series.

A truly horrible, heartwarming Christmas tale

Iain Grant and Heide Goody tell a story of an almost-combined British family who attend a rural Christmas market in northern England, only to have the supposed bonding experience turn into something far less family-friendly than they had planned.

Dave, a NHS paramedic, and his fiancée Esther, plus his 11 year old daughter and her teenage son, came to the rural village’s annual fête to shop, eat Christmas treats, and introduce the children to each other for the first time. It was to be a lovely seasonal outing, and might well have been, except for one thing.

Think “evil elves”.

Heartwarming for the Twisted Of Mind

I mean that in a good way. Hilarious, as all these authors’ offerings are. Requires a good sense of humor and a knowledge of folklore and elf knowledge to fully appreciate, and an ability to not take oneself to seriously. Anyone who loves Terry Pratchett will appreciate.

Dark and funny

The most bizarre and funny Christmas novel I've ever read. Some real laugh out loud moments as well as some mental cringing of the 'I can't believe that just happened ' kind. The name of this book is disturbingly apt! All I can say is beware of Christmas markets and not all elves are like Patch or Legolas.

A fun tale of two families coming together to survive Christmas and the terror that a village full of bloodthirsty elves brings.

I enjoyed this read, it was in a similar style to other books by the authors with fun, humour, and a little bit of tame horror thrown in the mix.

Brilliantly absurd. Jokes that a christmas cracker would ashamed of and gives christmas traditions a good kicking into the bargain.

I love Christmas, but I'm not one for schmaltzy seasonal books and films - Die Hard is my Christmas movie! But give me murderous Christmas elves and I'm right there!

Lovers Esther and Dave are hoping to marry soon, but their kids haven't met yet. So Esther and her 16 year old son Newton are going to spend Christmas with Dave and his daughter Guin, who is 10, to see how they all get along. After picking up Esther and Newton from the station, the soon-to-be family head off to spend the afternoon at a local Christmas market before moving on to Dave's house. But this isn't like any other Christmas market, and the team spend the rest of the book trying to outwit and outrun hundreds (at least it seemed that many) of blood thirsty elves.

This is the kids' story. Newton is adorable, probably gentler than most teenage boys, he loves his mum and his visits to his local stable. He is a sweet boy, who does his best to make people, particularly his mum, happy and keep their spirits up. But when pushed into a corner, he proves to be very resourceful. I loved Guin. She's an unusual child, without many friends, so she makes her own from wire, tin foil and the like and has deep philosophical discussions with them. Of the four, she's the most level headed and inventive in trying to get the family out of their predicament. Although Dave and Esther deserve a mention for their 'elf-stabbing tractor fender'.

This is such a funny story, but with loads of complete gross out moments. It's full of blood, body parts, gloop and violence - it's not for the faint hearted! But it's delivered with a hefty dose of humour. The story, as I've come to expect from these authors, is more than slightly bonkers, but I mean this in the best possible way! It's hugely creative and I loved the nod to various action movies. And the elves know the term 'Bobby Dazzler'! I laughed out loud at that.

My copy (eBook) had a few typos in it, but hopefully these have been picked up and remedied now. Those aside, I loved this book - definitely my kind of Christmas story!

This is a dark little Christmas horror story that is balanced by tongue in cheek humor and sarcasm.

On the surface it is the story of two single parents introducing their children to one another at Christmas in the hope of becoming a 21st century Brady Bunch. Guin and her father and picking up Newton and his mother at the train station and planning a visit to the Christmas Market. Guin's father is a widower and a paramedic. Newton's mother helps displaced and abused women, likes to craft and upcycle.

Their trip to the Christmas market goes terribly wrong and they can't leave the town. The plot of this is straight up horror but the humor, absurdity and sarcasm keep the book from being a true horror story. Or it won't give you nightmares.

My favorite bits were the characters struggling with being critical of an attacking force while being "woke". For example, wondering if disguising themselves as elves to escape their attackers is cultural appropriation. And being offended when one character calls the elves midgets. "We don't use the M word"

This is a book for everyone but if you like sarcasm, can deal with zombie reindeer and other walking dead type horror it is an excellent book.

I needed a change and that's what I got!

It turned out to be a nice and easy read that also perfectly fit in with my strange sense of humour. The title was the first thing that drew me to this book, it wasn't to be your typical happy holiday novel at all. But I also loved the fact that it also wasn't a normal horror book either, it was different and I found it was really an enjoyable read.

I did feel that it dragged a bit at the beginning. I was waiting on the buckets of blood which took a few chapters to get to. It does however give you more background on the characters so you can understand better how they behave once things start getting strange.

The characters themselves are to be a blended family and are spending time together for their first Christmas and getting to know each other. What's a better way to get to know one another than being stranded with mythical killer elves?

Even with the bloody title and some disturbing things described it is also very comical as well and found myself still laughing throughout. It also certainly brings to prospective how some disastrous holidays certainly could be a lot worse.

Glad to have read it definitely just what I needed.

Having just finished a few deeply serious and dark books I turned to Heide and Ian for some lighter reading. Having read a few of their books before, I knew it would be gory with a good splash of fun, and they didn't let me down
Dave and Esther are single parents just getting to know each other and have arranged to spend Christmas together with their respective kids, the first time the kids will meet. Esther and son Newton travel by train and Dave and daughter Guin drive to meet them. On the way back to Dave's they take a detour to a quaint village with a Christmas market. Unfortunately Dave's car breaks down and that's just the start of their troubles. Strange sights and noises lead to the discovery of murderous elves. The elves attack and the family gets split up, can they all survive, get back together and escape the elves clutches?
A strange sleigh pulled by equally strange reindeer is a crazy and dangerous roller coaster like ride.
As usually these books are well written, Newton is full of puns and crazy jokes which he never fails to bring out at the most inopertune time. The rest of the family are equally fun and very diverse.
If you're looking for a darkly comedic read you can't go far wrong here.

Carrying on in the classic tradition of festive favourites like Die Hard, Gremlins and Home Alone, Candy Canes and Buckets of Blood is a brilliant and hilarious Christmas action movie in book form. Chock full of gratuitous slapstick ultra-violence with a generous helping of extreme festive family jeopardy on the side, it is the perfect comedy antidote to any cosy seasonal fiction you might be tempted to read at this special time of year.

The story stars a tribe of elves, but they are nothing like Santa’s cheerful little helpers or lovable Buddy from ‘Elf’ - these psychotic fairy folk are a complete nightmare and they are on a deadly mission not only to ruin Christmas but to take over the entire world in the process. Can Dave and Esther and their teenage offspring save the day for humankind?

There’s only one way to find out...

Candy Canes and Buckets of Blood is not your usual Christmas story , if you couldn't guess from the title - think of it more as a nightmare before Christmas but with murderous elves!! This is dark comedy that appealed to my sense of humour, with funny one liners and the overall general sense of humour amongst the chaos that ensues from these murderous little elves. A lot happens to this blended family in one night and honestly I couldn't stop reading. They couldn't quite believe that elves are real, or the fact that they are also on a killing spree. When the elves attack the family gets split up, and it soon becomes and fight for survival.

This was a bizarre book to say the least, full of humour, blood and violence - a great alternative Christmas book that is for sure, and I can wait to read more from Heide and Iain

Elves have never been so scary

Esther and David are a couple who are using Christmas to introduce their kids to each other.
They attend a Christmas market together in a small village but things don’t match up there and they see things that make them question things.
Guin is a prickly child with ways to deal with things by creating her own dolls and uses them, Newton is a shy teenager with a love of animals.
This book has a great premise and a typical great story from Iain and Heide love everything they co-write.

What starts as a lovely story about families and the magic of Christmas soon turns into something a bit odd, and then into something rather more sinister. But this is a story written by Heide Goody and Iain Grant, so I wouldn’t expect anything less than a different take on what starts as a heart-warming story. There is a lot of humour in the writing, but a somewhat darker humour in this book as it turns into more of a horror story. Utterly bonkers in places, which is exactly what I love about how these two authors write as you never quite know what they are going to come up with next!

This was not my usual reading genre but I thought it sounded interesting and it was fab, fab, fab. I loved it.

Two families come together for what they think will be a lovely festive period and end up fighting murderous Christmas elves! I wouldn't know whether to list it as dark comedy, horror or humour as it has it all. Blood, gore and laugh out loud one liners. I really don't want to give any spoilers out for this little gem but I highly recommended you read it.

A massive 5 stars.

I loved this book! We have all had a Christmas from Hell but the premise of a sleigh of murderous Elves descending on a family is fortunately something that we (hopefully) haven't had to deal with yet!

This isn't your normal horror book and is splattered with lots of humour which had me laughing throughout. This is an entirely unique book and if you fancy something different to the normal Christmas stories than this is the book for you!!

A mad-cap world of murderous elves, makes this a book full or twists and turns and adventures. With a bit of gore thrown in and some odd characters this made a different read from your normal Christmas book. The action never stops, drawing you into the book. Its and easy, quick read with some amusing episodes and if you want something different to read then this is it.

Another new series from these prolific writers with their characteristic weird with a heavy dose of sarcasm and wit. A fun, easy read with a Christmas theme about families coming together set alongside some murderous elves and a soupcon [or bucketful!!] of gore. It might be a little manic for some but for me it is another great 'laugh out loud' tale that I thoroughly enjoyed.
