Their Future Depends on His Past Specialist Rakhi Chen has spent her life focused on taking care of others—her squad mates, her friends, and most of all, her umbra wolf. The last thing she wanted was time to focus on herself, but a combat injury forces her and her wolf into some mandatory shore leave. Having a too-pretty veterinarian invade her space was not going to be an improvement. Javad Priddy was one of the youngest doctors to work with the rangers and their umbra wolves, a pinnacle position that he'd almost convinced himself he'd earned. But the benefactors whose help greased the way to success have come to collect, and the only payment they'll accept is one that sets fire to all he's accomplished. With his options dwindling, he goes on the run to deliver a warning to Chen and her wolf. Time is running out for Javad, and for the people he cares about, which he's come to realize includes a gruff, irascible ranger and her light-hearted bondmate. He's seen rangers do superhuman things, but every hero has a weakness—and Javad worries that the depth of his betrayal could destroy Chen's already-bruised heart as well as their future.
3.5 stars for - Chen, bk#3 in JC Hay’s TriSystem’s: Rangers series - a Close Proximity trope, sci-fi romance, space opera novel with a wolf partner (or futuristic K-9) and a HEA. This was my 5th JC Hay novel, the 3rd I have read in this series. I absolutely loved the other 4 stories I’ve read. (I rarely give 5 stars but gave Grenville one).
Chen seemed slower moving in general, to me, than the previous books in this series (perhaps partly because Chen/FMC and her wolf partner are on medical leave for therapy and healing of a recent injury). Also, it seemed to me that this story was centered more on Chen working through her relationship issues (both past and present) than on simply action/adventure alone. I prefer lots of action and minimal drama/angst but other readers may enjoy this switch in focus. I still have enjoyed this series very much, have wondered who Chen was as relates to her team members and Chen/#3 addressed these questions for me. Penzak is #4 in the series and I am looking forward to purchasing it next.
Each book in the Tri Systems: Rangers series can read as standalone titles, but I believe they are more enjoyable read as a series, in order. Plus, books #1 and #2 are really great fun! (Inouye and Grenville). The Tri Systems: Rangers series features military futuristic Rangers who work in tandem with their wolf partners. The partners share a mental/emotional connection which allows them to work very well together. Yet when one partner is injured the other partner suffers as well. The wolf partner aspect keeps this series fun and fresh for me. If you enjoy light, fast moving, action adventure sci-fi romance, I suggest giving JC Hay novels a shot. My copy of Chen was a Kindle version.
Reader Cautions - Violence - yes but minimal, PG-13. This is sci-fi with Bad Guys, blaster type and present day firearms/blades. Language - yes. Rare/strong profanity (10? or so). While in character- military. Sexual situations - yes, the one intimacy scene between the 2 MCs occurs around the 61% spot. IMO, it is fairly brief and rather easily by-passed if deemed necessary. It is also mentioned briefly that due to her past experiences, Chen/FMC felt emotionally safer with same sex relationships than hetero relationships, prior to becoming serious with veterInarian Dr. Javad Priddy/MMC in Chen/#3. Readers who would would be offended by any of the aforementioned should look elsewhere.
