My father is missing. As the head of the Callaghan mob family, he has lots of enemies. Somehow, one of them got their hands on him. So now my brothers and I are on the hunt for a kidnapper. Can't wait to meet him, and end him. But while my father is missing someone has to keep the family business running. And that means collecting on our loans.
When one of the families can't pay up, they offer me their daughter instead. Ciara is stubborn, feisty, and deliciously not interested. I never back down from a fight. I'll prove to her I'm the only one who can meet her needs, And I'll find my father.
Declan is the first book of the Callaghan Mafia series.
Savannah Rylan is a romance writer that spends most of her time writing and reading with her cat, Gris. When not penning the next great American novel, (HA), you can find her on the beach with a drink in her hand or at the gym testing out some strange new position. Yoga, obviously. She lives in Southern California with her husband and Gris, the true love of her life.
My opinion remains the same - I enjoyed it and it was a quick read. Declan was ruthless as the new head of his mafia family and he gained Ciara as a payment of debt owed by a rival family. And although ruthless to everyone else, we began to see a softness with Ciara and Ciara alone. It was a worthy read and a good introduction to the series.
Original Review: 1/30/21
Declan was the first book in the Callaghan Mafia series by Savanah Rylan.
Declan was the eldest Callaghan sibling of four sons. Their father (adopted step father) was missing and Declan was the interim head of the Irish Mafia family. His sole purpose was to find the kidnappers as soon as possible. In doing so, he crossed paths with Ciara, the daughter of a rival family. Simultaneously with the introduction and development between Declan and Ciara, the major plot had a suspenseful vibe that will carryover throughout the series.
Overall, it was a quick and entertaining read that was a good introduction to the series. It set the stage for the series players as well as what to expect from each one going forward. There were still some major questions to be answered, so hopefully we’ll get more with Brody next.
i seriously don't know how this book got such a high rating. this was my first time reading one of Rylans books and i'm not sure i like it that much. I'll cut to the chase.....
1. i really dint like the way she just kept on saying "Declan....... Declan!.......Dec-LAN!!!!!!! (how do u pronounce that last 'Declan'?) when they were doing the whoopdie doo.
2. It says that she hates him in the summary thingy...... she doesnt actually..... she fucking likes him! This is after she gets sold to him by her father to pay off a debt. When I read a book I like my characters to lust after each other and then after a bit, love. About 30% into the book they say they love each other. I cannot see how you can love someone without at least knowing them.........She said she hated that she was being bought and that she was going to lose her v-card, but dude....... in chapter 6 (its a very short book) they practically had sex!!
3. I feel like this book isn't exactly a mafia book. it felt more like a family drama. never once did it talk about the "work" that the H does.
Short version of the story, all it talks about is how Richard (step-dad) gets kidnapped from this office (in the house) and his wife doesnt even hear all the commotion going upstairs when she's in the kitchen. She calls her sons and tells them to come home and they do. They start "investigating" but the only investigating that happens in the book is that they think the h's father took him. H comes to collect the debt the h's father owns to his family and daddy dearest sells his daughter in exchange for him to relive him of the debt. H takes h to his house where his mother looks at the girl snootily (if thats even a word) and the h asks the H if his mother doesn't like her. Seriously? She dint even get in and she's worried about mommy's feelings than what they H is going to do to her?
All in all this book was a huge disappointment to me that I would not read again. i think u just gotta read it to understand what i'm sayin.
This was book 1 in "The Callaghan Mafia"Declan is the eldest son of the Callaghan family must take the reins of the business when his stepfather disappears. The first step is to collect a huge debt from another crime family James Daly when he is offered an alternative payment Declan takes the offer his daughter Ciara. Ciara has been abused by her father her whole life and she has the scars to prove it. This was a pretty good read and my first time reading this author. Declan has things that he likes when it comes to sex he's the tie them to the bed type and it was hot Ciara who is a virgin she doesn't know what to expect. I wanted more of a backstory on Declan and his brothers. His mother Fiona tried to get Ciara to leave Declan but she didn't she went to find answers from her father who beat her again but Declan went to get his girl. These two fell in love fast it was a lot going on in this book. Who killed Richard? This book had a few errors in the grammar but nothing that made me want to stop reading it. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
I’m not sure why this is advertised as a Mafia book. It does mention the mafia at a times, and does involve stereotypical issues, but they are all in the background of an otherwise drab story. There are way too many lines thrown out and not enough brought back in for any of it to make sense. It’s not horrible, but it’s really not good either. I won’t be reading more from this series.
Fantastic start to a new series! This is one action packed mafia romance that had me glued to the pages from start to finish reading. The author brings a strong cast of characters , centered around Declan and Ciara, who meet under extreme circumstances. There's so many emotions flowing through the pages .. you can feel the pain and despair , the anger and the fear as well as the desperation and need for understanding and love on Ciara's part and you can sense the control and leadership on Declan's part as well as his growing feelings for Ciara. The scenes are described in vivid detail, bringing the story to life with all the drama, mystery and violence as well as the sexual erotic scenes. The story is told in the dual POV , flows fluidly and was a true page turner for me and still left with wanting more at the end. I'll anxiously be waiting for the next book. Highly recommend if this is your genre!!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
A little too instalove and instakinky for me and Declan doesn't ooze Alpha at times but still a somewhat engaging story. Ciara is TSTL at times and her OOC actions were something to behold - both with her dad and the speech at the end.
I have the second book in my sights but I"m not sure if I'll actually continue to follow the series.
One of my favorite authors. She didn't let me down with this new series. The Callaghan boys, less Flynn, are coming back to Chicago when their mom calls and says their father was taken. Declan the oldest takes charge and since he would be the next in line to head the family. Ciara is the daughter of another mafia boss. Her father is sleazy and he gives her to Declan to cover the famiky debt. Declan and Ciara are attracted immediately but she is an outsider and from an enemy famiky, will his famiky accept her? This has all the sexy scenes you want but the true mystery is what happened to Richard, their father, and who us involved? Their mother appears to have lied about some things, but she's their mother. Richards brother, though loyal, also has motive to kill him. Then there are the other families. I think the only thing that got me was how quickly Chara want from submissive to strong. Good sex helps a lot but her transformation was amazingly quick. Look forward to Brodys book. I was given this book for an honest voluntary review
What a great start to a new series by Savannah Rylan. Declan The Callaghan Mafia Book 1 was a thrilling suspenseful beginning into the dark world of the Irish Mafia in Chicago. This story surrounds Declan Callaghan along with his two brothers who returns to Chicago to take over the family business when his father Richard head of the family goes missing. Ciara, is a young woman who has been abused and tortured and kept prisoner by her father James Daly head of one of the mob families in Chicago to be used to increase his power. Declan is a tough rough alpha man that can be brutal to anyone who hurts his family and now he has to pay a visit to James who owes a debt to his family which has never been paid back and to find out if he had anything to do with his father's disappearance. An altercation happens between Declan and James and when Ciara is thrown into the room landing at his feet, he becomes captivated by one look at her. When he notices her scars and how afraid and frail she is, he decides to forgo the debt and take Ciara instead as his wife. The interaction and chemistry between these two was steamy and passionate as Declan and Ciara are both sexually drawn to each other. Declan has no will power when he is with her and has to make her his and so he begins to bend her to his will. Ciara can no longer deny her feelings and she wants all the passion and desire that Declan brings out of her as they become one as this is the first time in her life she has someone who will love and protect her. Will she submit to Declan fully and can he trust her as he wonders if she has the information he seeks?
Between all of the chaos, drama and violence that surrounds this family will Declan stop the fighting within his own family over Ciara and his position of power and get to the truth? When Ciara is offered the means to leave Declan, she will soon discover that other players are involved in this scheme. Now Ciara is about to embark on a dangerous journey to get her life back, will she be put in danger? When Declan finds Ciara gone he will discover the one that betrayed him and is racing to get to Ciara in time. Between all of the drama and violence that happens during her rescue, Declan learns that Ciara would never betray him as she has become this feisty, strong woman who confronts her tormentor not caring for her own safety. Declan has finally found the one woman who is worthy of being his wife who will be by his side as the love that has developed between them is strong and unbreakable. When new information is brought forward, Declan has no choice but to gather all the families to enforce his power and strength and announce that he now is in charge of them all. Who can be trusted, will they ever find out what happened to Richard. With all of the twists and turns we are now left wondering what is going to happen next to this family. You will be on edge with this arousing thriller which is a must read! So excited that Brody's book is next in this dark thrilling series about the Irish Mafia. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Savannah Rylan’s newest novel, Declan, is a sizzling, hot powerhouse of a read about a man searching desperately to find his missing father, while stepping up to keep his family safe and together, and the family business thriving. Despite the battle that is about to start for control of his father’s throne, Declan Callaghan is offered the gorgeous and terrified Ciara Daly in payment for what her father owed to the Callaghan family. Declan knew that her father had something to do with the disappearance of his own father and he hoped that Ciara would tell him all she knew. He noted scars and bruising on her body when the tiny dress she wore rode up and was sickened by the fact that any man would treatment a woman in such a manner, let alone his own child. Declan was infuriated. Ciara understood quite well what was happening when her father gave her to Declan to clear his debts and she did not dare protest or question him. As for Declan, he could not take his eyes off the beautiful girl and determined she belonged to him. He knew he had to win her over because he did not want her to fear him as she obviously did. I could not put this book down and read it through in one sitting! There are more twists and turns in this plot that I did not see coming, and the danger Ciara and Declan experience took my breath away. Ms. Rylan has proven repeatedly that she knows how to write a terrific romance novel, and Declan is no exception. Declan is what romance novels are all about!! READ IT!!!
A Perfect Book One for a New Series. Declan, The Callaghan Mafia #1 is a new gem of a series written by the lovely romance writer, Savannah Rylan. Declan is the eldest of four brothers who has rushed over from Ireland to Chicago after they receive an alarming call from their mother that Richard, her husband, the boy’s stepfather, and the head of the family business (mafia) has disappeared. Thus starts a mafia murder mystery where not only do the brothers look at other families in the business but their own extended family as well. Declan, who is the temp head of the family, and will be the permanent head of Richard turns up dead, he quickly begins going through financial records to see who owns what to the family. The largest debt is with the Daly Family. Not only is it the largest, it’s been on the books for a long time. Declan decides to go visit Mr Daly and instead of paying Declan he offers him his youngest daughter, Ciara. Ciara has withstood years and years of physical and emotional abuse from her father. Declan notices are the scars and takes her. What no one counts on is how quickly Declan and Ciara bond. This is a great first book of a new series. It really held my interest as so many things were happening but intertwined that I just didn’t want the book to end. The little teaser of book two provided at the end made my hungry for the book to be out quickly. I’m wholeheartedly recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. Peace.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this truly fascinating mafia romance & it is an excellent start to the new series. The characters are well-developed & interesting with good chemistry between them even through their initial meeting was completely unconventional, in particular I like the way the female character continued to develop throughout the story-line to become a capable strong-willed individual. The story-line and plot is intriguing, well-thought out and written, it makes the reader wait with great anticipation for the next book in the series. There is: a abused & scarred young woman (Ciarra)who has been kept a prisoner by her despicable father (James Daly, head of Daly crime family) is given to a tough alpha male (Declan, the eldest son & acting head of the Callaghan mafia) who is collecting all outstanding debt due, a missing father & mob boss (Richard), his manipulating mother (Fiona), suspense, drama, intrigue, twists & turns, mafia, secrets, mystery, action, adventure, threats, danger, violence, conflict, deceit, betrayal, confrontations, assault, abduction, blazing guns, vengeful feelings, attempted escape, emotional turmoil, verbal conflict, fear, manipulations, discovery, some steamy scenes, suspicions & vengeful feelings. Sadly this book does end in a cliffhanger & there is a tantalizing glimpse of the next book in the series. I will be waiting with great anticipation.
i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the first book in a new series called The Callaghan Mafia. In this book, Declan and his brothers Brody and Gael return to the US from Ireland when their step father goes missing. Declan steps in as the head of the family until they find their step father. Declan goes to a rival family's leader to collect a debt owed and it is paid with his daughter Ciara. Ciara was raised to be used by her father to pay his debts and always knew she would be given away some day. When Ciara learns she is going to be given to Declan, she wonders if he is going to kill her, or treat her badly. Declan was unsure about taking Ciara until he saw her, then he wanted her for himself. Declan found himself wanting to care for Ciara and they grow closer, but Declan is also still trying to find his step father and dealing with even more problems that arise, making him wonder who to trust. i really liked this book, i liked Ciara, i think she was stronger than she thought she was and i think she really cared for Declan. Declan was a strong alpha and a good leader, but he didn't want to see Ciara hurt. I like that Declan was willing to step up and lead the family and wasn't afraid of anyone. I look forward to reading the next boo, Brody and learning more of the story.
I mean this book isn’t it at all, this isn’t how mafia is supposed to be,I mean if she didn’t write mafia then I would have understood because the book is not worth it.It is childish and not well written,I have read a lot of mafia novels and this just looks like child’s play to me.
When I started it honestly I was excited because the girl’s part was nice but then Declan part started and I was honestly disappointed ☹️ because how can they receive a phone call from their mum saying that their step father has been captured by unknown men and his own security staff doesn’t know and Declan and his brothers immediately hop on a jet to meet her and automatically decide that he will be the one to take care of things that the man left behind.Like the story isn’t real at all,how can u say things like”we jump to no conclusions..the “brothers” kept quiet and I gazed out the window”like they are your brothers not mine🧐.It didn’t give me the satisfaction I thought I would have after reading the plot,I honestly had doubts but I read comments and thought it was safe to read then I met that😔.

Declan must do what must be done for the only family he has ever known, but at what cost? When he comes back to Chicago, he wants to find his father, but is met with more questions than answers when he looks into his father's disappearance. So when he digs deeper, he is met with resistance from his mother and Uncle. So when he brings Ciara into the fold, his decision is questioned yet again...he wants to be kind to family, but leading with a heavy hand is sometimes needed. But what will he do with Ciara?
Ciara has been groomed to be a pawn when her father needs to get something from someone else. So when she is instructed that she will be given to another man and become his problem, she wants to fight, but can she? When she meets Declan, she feels scared and protected. Can this actually work for her? Can she have a future and choices?
This is an explosive start to the series and I can't wait for more and more and find out what happened to their father!!! I received an ARC of this book from the author.
Wowzer! What a rush... This is the first book in a new series by Savannah Rylan. Declan follows the Callaghan Mafia family and takes you into the dark world of organized crime. The story is about Declan, the eldest son of the Callaghan family, who must take the reins of the business when his stepfather disappears. The first step is to collect a huge debt from another crime family. When he is offered an alternative payment, Declan takes the offer. Ciara is the daughter of James Daly, who is deep in debt to the Callaghans. The circumstances she finds herself in are frightening. As her situation improves, she finds a strength she did not know she had. As Ciara and Declan form an alliance, the search for the stepfather heats up. Savannah Rylan writes a cohesive tale with fully fleshed out characters and plot, taking the reader on an action-packed ride with many twists and turns. However, this book ends in a cliffhanger, as the author sets up the next book in this series. Great book, strong plot and entertaining makes this book a 5-star read!
This is an action packed mafia romance that had me glued to the pages from start to finish reading.
Declan is now the head of the Callaghan mob family. Declan Callaghan along with his two brothers who returns to Chicago to take over the family business when his step-father Richard head of the family goes missing. Declan doesn't want to be the bad guy, but, he's being pushed into that roll of leadership.
Ciara's father owes millions to the Callaghan family. Declan takes Ciara as payment. Ciara's father kept her under lock and key, never allowing her to do anything except to go to school. She has lead a very sheltered life and doesn't know much about the real world because of her father.
Will Declan be able to find his step-father Richard? Will Ciara be able to move past what her father did to her when she was growing up? Will Ciara be able to trust and love Declan? Can Declan trust Ciara to stay with him?
I did receive a free ARC Copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.
Declan and Ciara leapt off the page! Could not put down!
Declan is called home when his father goes missing. Being the oldest, he has to step up and take charge of the family business in Chicago. When he starts to dig for information about the disappearance, he takes payment of a debt owed in the form of Ciara, a rival’s daughter, whom he has promised to marry on the proviso said debt is paid in full.
Ciara has been sheltered and abused all her life by her father and when she is sold off to pay his debt she cannot fathom what new nightmare she will be thrust into for the sake of escaping her hell.
Declan and Ciara have great chemistry and as secrets unfold so does their complicated relationship.
If you love bad boy mafioso men and the women whom they give back a lease of live to then you will love this book! Excellent start to a new series and I am excited for what comes next.
I voluntarily read this book for an honest review.
“Declan” is the first book in this new series and while not my favorite story by Savannah Rylan it still rates a 4 star review. Declan the oldest son of the Callaghan Mafia family leaves Ireland and travels to America to search for his missing father and to head the Irish mafia while his father is missing. The rival Daly family owes quite a bit of money to the mafia but is unable to pay. Ciara is given to Declan in exchange for the money. Ciara has been mentally and physically abused for years by her father and doesn’t know what to expect from Declan. The search for Declan’s father and the relationship between Declan and Ciara provide plenty of drama, suspense, intrigue, passion and mystery. If you’re looking for an exciting plot with steamy sex, much danger, amazing chemistry and of course love, “Declan” is the book for you. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I can’t say that I loved this book. I really really wanted to but something just isn’t there. I thought the story of the mafia boys was outstanding. There is a family rift and drama and violence.
Declan seems to do a good thing looking out for his family despite all obstacles. He seems strong and has the leader aura. On the other side his sexual appetites (BDSM variety)are not my thing. Neither was his insta love for Ciara. That just surprised me. Maybe he should have remembered her from his youth and how much he liked her and such. More connection.
Ciara was really believable as a character and I felt for her more than once. Although there is a couple times she seemed too outspoken for her place and her past.
The brothers Gael and Brody are interesting but I didn’t really get connected to them. They almost were too out of the picture for me to connect to draw me into learning about them more.
I got this book last year through stuff your kindle day. Didn’t read it right away because my TBR is way too long for my own good, finally working my way through some of my kindle books and thought to myself “short read I’ll have this read before I need to go to work today” Now I’m just in a mood because I feel I wasted my time. I love me some Mafia books, I have read many and this just didn’t hit the mark. On top of that the lack of communication before he just “took”her was off putting, she is a virgin, has been abused and she just comes around in a day? There are holes in the story and it could have been a good one had the author taken more time to outline and fill in certain areas.
***please research bdsm dynamics before trying to right about them. This was so off putting and gross in how a Dom should behave. There was no discussion, the FMC had questions she should have been free to ask had he communicated and not shut her down. Gave me the ick.***
I love a good mafia story. But I'm torn on this one.
I want to give it a good review, because there's a decent plot and some spice and really, that's what most of us are looking for in a quality book.
But there are a lot of negatives to this one. The spelling errors, for one. I'm... really bad with grammar. And if I find a lot of errors, I have trouble enjoying a book. I tried, really I did. And at least I finished the book. Putting something on my DNF list is never something I enjoy. Focusing on the plot is what allowed me to go but it was a confusing one at the best of times. Smut didn't make sense where it was put at and neither did certain situations that the characters found themselves in.
Altogether, not horrible, but not the greatest either. 3 solid stars for the plot plus smut, so go in with eyes wide open.
As Declan comes home to head up the family after his father goes missing, he is given Ciara, a woman that has been abused and scarred by her father, to pay off her father's debt. I love sexy reads, but without knowing too much about the mafia clans and the characters involved, including Declan and Ciara, there was a bit too much sex and not enough story at the beginning. As their story continued, Declan and Ciara were both fleshed out with a story that became a solid read. Make no mistake, Declan is ruthless, but the author writes him so the reader will fall in love with him. Looking forward to Brody's story as the saga of the Callaghan's plays out, Declan does end on a cliffhanger. **I was gifted "Declan" and leave my honest opinion based on my reading** 3.5 Stars!
Oh my. This book was freaking intense and definitely I need more so much more of Declan and Ciara. From the start when Ciara is given off as a debt payment to Declan I had no and was seriously curious as to how would they translate into a loving relationship. Moreover I didn't know if I was gonna even like Declan. But THAT MAN😍🔥. HE'S HOT & INTENSE & ALL ROUGH MASCULINE PERSONALITY that'll lit you up on fire just like Ciara was. 😜. I really could go on reading about them. I really loved the writing that pieced this story to such a great built-up and making wanting for more. Declan as the head of the family, new responsibilities yet Ciara is and will always be his queen. I'm so re-reading this one again. Loved loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was about Ciara Daly who's father sold her to pay off a debt to Irish Mafia leader Declan Callaghan.
So much suspense, danger, drama and intensity in this book which I have to say was absolutely wonderful. It has a cliff hanger type ending but is certainly a book that leads on to a different brother's story.
I loved Ciara who had been sheltered all her life but abused by her father. She comes into her own power during the book on a few occasions and made me want to cheer. But Declan also was a great character and those two together. Perfect!
Can't wait for more in the series. Just excellent!!!.

Declan is Book 1 of The Callaghan Mafia series. Upon reading the blurb for Declan, I knew I had to read the book. After I started reading Declan, I absolutely loved it. I adored Ciara and Declan. I foundCiara to be a lovely person, and Declan I found him to be your typical sexy Mafia Don. I thought Declan to be both suspenseful and a page-turner. I throughly enjoyed reading Declan and can hardly wait to read the other books of this series. I also thought Declan to be an enjoyable and entertaining story. Also, I thought the author did an amazing job on telling the story of Ciara and Declan. I would most definitely suggest this book to other readers.

I don’t know why this was so highly rated. I got this book for free on stuff your kindle day. I think the plot of the book was just too sped up for what the author was trying to do. She was sold off to him for her virginity and to pay off her father’s debt. She hated him and was scared, crying herself to sleep and then the next day wanting him and they were already doing it. And he didn’t even do anything for her, he was just attractive and she wanted to jump his bones. It just made no sense. That was way too fast paced for that type of situation for her to do a 180 like that. The way he thought about her was gross and a little creepy. And the whole “mafia” plot was no where to be seen, it all felt like it was in the background of the book.
What in the sexually frustrated fever dream is this even?
This so disappointing. First, the grammatical errors. One or two minor ones, ok. But this was like reading school papers by kids who don't know what grammarly is. Spoiler** Unthawed does not mean defrosted. Moving onto the logistics of the sex scenes...I just don't even know where to start. SPOILER But, please lets tie her to a chair on the same night she had to have a blood drained from her inner thigh-if I even understood that scene because how tf did that happen in a gun fight?
Seriously, there were parts tgat really worked and parts that really made no sense.3 stars because there is a solid story there if you can wade through all the disappointment.
I really enjoyed this story, it’s the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m looking forward to reading more!
The story is well written and the characters are endearing and have good chemistry…. I was expecting not to like Declan at first but I did he was strong and dominant but respectful and showed his softer side to ciara and became protective to her which gave her the confidence to stand up for herself.
The only thing that stopped me giving it 5 stars is that the story and timelinefelt very rushed and not really realistic - or as realistic as a mafia romance story can be!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Savannah Rylan threw in some jalapeño peppers in this one taking the steam level past a simmer and boil!! This mafia family’s definitely not one to mess with lightly. Declan and Ciara (after she came out of her shell) proved to be a power couple in the making. Nothing like good loving to give you that extra boost...and she got it Xs 1000000!! I have an idea about who did what and I’m anticipating finding out more in Brody’s story. Great job as always!! I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
