Kate Farrell, a McKenna on her mother's side, is a veterinarian who can speak and listen to animals. After her mentor dies in a stampede at the horse sanctuary he worked with, Kate agrees to offer her services to the sanctuary, even though it's run by Chase Brody. She and Chase have a history - they loved each other as teenagers before he up and disappeared after his friend was killed in an accident, breaking her heart. But she still cares and wants to continue her mentor's work. But one look in the horses's minds and she knows that her mentor was murdered. Chase is also dealing with the sabotage of his sanctuary and it's possible the murderer and the saboteur are one and the same. So she and Chase work together to get to the bottom of the mystery. Meanwhile, they will finally hash out what happened and get to the bottom of their heartbreak while perhaps finding a second chance at their lost romance.

On the whole, this was an enjoyable story. I liked the paranormal twist and how that contributed to the story and investigation. I also liked that there were so many red herrings dropped in our laps that there was no way to determine who the actual villain(s) were and to what degree everyone was acting awful. I mean in one sense, it's kinda ridiculous that Chase is surrounded by SO MANY people who hate him. Every single person working for him (and one or two who aren't) has a motive for sabotage...so Chase is in a bad way. But it also means that you have no idea who might hate him enough to have murdered to cover up their actions. And it was fun following the investigation that far.

Now usually, I balk at second chance romances because there's usually someone at fault, there's a lot of bitterness and nothing gets resolved to my satisfaction. This one did things pretty well actually. Chase is clearly at fault and he ran because of fear of repercussions after the accident that got someone killed...and he dropped completely out of touch breaking 15-year-old Kate's heart. She doesn't hate him for it - she still cares and she doesn't trust him not to do it again. And Chase pretty much hates himself for what he did and he owns it. So that I appreciated as well. When it came down to it too, Kate was 15 - she was so young and she wonders how different her life would have been so she's also kinda glad that things turned out the way they did and for some reason in this story it just all felt believable and right. And so I had no issue with the second chance romance. Except I maybe would have liked some sort of discussion of the whole "bet" thing after the final confrontation went down. Also...the fate of the missing horses..heartbroken. Would have been interesting to know how that affected the sanctuary in the long term and how on earth Chase is supposed to replace all these people who hate him.

The intermingling of three stories kept me guessing as to which one was the most important. Reuniting Kate Farrell with Chase Brody, saving the wild mustang reserve or developing Kate's special gift of being able to communicate with animals, especially horses? All of these stories seemed to progress at about the same pace. Moving forward for awhile, then experiencing a set-back. Every set-back was painful.

I was constantly amazed at Kate's bravery...or was it foolishness. She got herself into trouble again and again. Many times needing Chase to rescue her. It was always a guessing game to try to determine who could be trusted. Jealousy and lies showed up again and again. Poor Kate didn't know who she could believe, and Chase had trouble deciding how much of his past he was ready and willing to share with Kate. Again and again he risked losing her. And again and again she risked shutting him out forever.

In the end all questions are answered. I don't want to spoil the ending by telling any more.

Good But A Little Short

Chase and Kate had a love history that ended badly in high school yet, now that they are both back home again it seems that history was catching up with them. Chase runs a safe refuge for wild mustangs and Kate is a vet whose mentor was killed in a mustang stampede. So, of course, their paths must cross and old feelings may be rekindled. The only problem is someone is sabotaging the refuge and who killed Doc, Kate’s mentor? There are lots of viable suspects. This was a good read, but too short. Also, the times didn’t always add up. Her grandmother’s legacy said 33 days after her thirty third birthday she would grasp her legacy, but Kate said she’d been away 20 years and she left when she was 15. That made her 35. Earlier in the story it stated that she was 13 when Chase left town and she hadn’t seen him in 18 years. That made her 31. How old is this woman?

I was looking for a very light read on a day I was planning to spend at the spa. Found this in my stash and it's probably my first Harlequin. With a title like that I wasn't sure I was comfortable reading it in public so I made a makeshift book cover for it.
I have to say it was far from what I expected. One "hot" scene in the whole book for a book title Touch me in the dark. Not an awful read just a misleading one. Of course my low expectations allowed me to enjoy it as an entertaining read.
