A haunting journey, washed with grief, the mysterious bequests of our ancestors and our lovers, and the mysteries of being human. The detail in the writing is so visceral that I almost have sense memories of my reading - the spray of the California coastline, the taste of roadside turkey sandwich and Diet Coke, the dimness of waking up midday in a motel with the shades drawn. Although the journey is in some ways a sad one, I found myself full of hope and breath when I finished. This is a book I’ll think about for a long time. I recommend it to anyone interested in unique and beautifully structured work ... and anyone who loves the real or imagined landscapes of California.
