Wynonna Riggs has to choose. Save her brother. Or save the world.

Armed with the Book of Shadows left behind by a deceased member of the Order of the Red Cloak, Winnie unlocks secrets that no one else could see in the book. These clues lead her to where her brother, Callum, is being held, and why the witches want him.

Winnie's rival in the Sanhedrin, Reyna Havlin, warns of an entity that has entered Steelshore hell-bent on destruction. Reyna challenges Winnie to put her personal desires aside and do what is right for the humans living there. The choice isn't easy, and she might lose some allies in the process. Winnie learns that her father faced the same hard decisions in his life. The knowledge of the past Phoenix unlocks an uncanny sight for Winnie. What will she choose? Save her brother from torture or stop mass destruction in the city that is her responsibility?

Second Sight is the second book in the Stories of Frost and Fire series. This series runs in conjunction with the Dog River Wolfpack series but can be read as a stand-alone series. Characters originate in Kimbra Swain's Fairy Tales of a Trailer Park Queen series.

From early in life Kimbra Swain was indoctrinated in the ways of geekdom. Raised on Star Wars, Tolkien, Superheroes and Voltron, she found herself immersed in a world of imagination. She started writing in high school, and completed her English degree from the University of Alabama in 2003.

Her writing is influenced by a gamut of authors including Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien, L.M. Montgomery, Timothy Zahn, Kathy Reichs, Kevin Hearne and Jim Butcher.

Born and raised in Alabama, Kimbra still lives there with her husband and 5 year old daughter. When she isn't reading or writing, she plays PC games, makes jewelry and builds cars.

This one really makes you fall in love with Winnie if you haven't already. She's developing into the woman she has always had the potential to be. There are some shocking turns that had me yelling at the pages. We learn more about Seamus. There are amazing introductions to new worlds and characters. I love the way these books intertwine with the Dog River series. There are drop ins from several fan favorite characters. There is mystery, romance, and humor. There's something for everyone. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Winnie has really come into her own as a leader and in learning about her abilities. With Callum missing, fairy trafficking and the ORC still causing Havoc, Winnie and her friends have thier hands full. But the fun doesn't end there. She doesn't have to look for trouble it finds her. This book had me laughing, crying and wanting to scream all at once.

This was by far the best Winnie book yet, there was so much going on and a lot to take in but this left me with so many questions. Way too many questions and of course there was a cliff hanger. I don't want to give any spoilers so i can't delve into all of my questions, but I do feel like perhaps it was too many questions left in the wind.
There were some grammatical errors, you can definitely tell when the author was in a rush, although she has definitely come a long way compared to her beginning books in this category - so kudos for that.
I still can't wrap my head around Winnie's transition from child to adult so quickly, I know that's how fairies age but it just seems like there are certain times when you can tell she still has the mind of child and there are certain times she doesn't and it just doesn't coincide with me, its just not believable but this was my favorite book about Winnie so far. She isn't my favorite character, I am anxiously awaiting books about her brothers but i will be patient.
Definitely give this a read!

DNF at around 50%, I just couldn't take the stupidity of the characters nor the rampant Mary Sue-isms any longer.

First the stupidity; They routinely underestimate or ignore obvious threats:

They go to the club that has the Siren that tried to manipulate them before and have nothing in the way of protections for the guy (of course the guy is the weak one, can't have a weak female anymore these days).

There's a character from the secret society that's actively hunting down and selling faeries into slavery. The character has, multiple times, said she's going to kill the MC. Does the MC do anything about it? Of course not, lets just let her come and go from main base of operations as she sees fit.

Then there's the Mary Sue aspects. The MC is given power in the previous books, she didn't have to earn it and apparently doesn't have to take any time to learn to use it. She's just awesome right out of the gate. There's a demon that has been sicced on them by unknown parties and they wander around the city trying to investigate and find it. They re-iterate, several times, how frightened they are of a creature of such power. When they encounter the demon, she just strolls up and utterly dominates it.

It's also more than a little annoying they put a character that's roughly 8 years old (I don't care if she's fully mature) into a senior leadership positions. Physically and mentally mature or not, she's still doesn't have life experience.

I think I'm done with Kimbra Swain. I enjoyed her previous books, but she's falling into the same trap of other UF/PN authors (Connie Suttle being a prime example) where they make their female characters juggernauts of power and the male characters are accessories or facilitators. She needs to take some lessons from authors like Lindsey Buroker to create characters with faults and weaknesses.

Beyond expectations!!

Everytime I wonder how Kimbra could possibly keep the story going she finds ways to add to the story and make it even better. Second sight blew all my expectations out of the water, creating a whole new layer to her world and to Winnies tale that was unpredictable and exciting! Its a book you just cant put down, is so very satisfying and will still leave you eager to get your hands on the next book!!! I adore Winnie and have loved watching as she grows, matures an strengthens with every new obstacle!!! All of Kimbra's characters are so full of life and so real that will live in my mind forever after!!!

I loved reading this second book in Winnie's series. The character has grown and changed as she becomes more confident with her ability to lead, her powers and the people around her. (Please, please, read the first book in the series before starting this one!)

As is standard in Author Swain's books, the flavor of the setting comes through clearly. The dialogue has the sound of real, living language and the pacing of it is great. The story moves quickly and logically through a plot filled with fun, action, adventure, and a bit of mystery.

This is a world I look forward to returning to with each book.

I read an ARC of this book and have chosen to review it.

The Phoenix rises. Amazing book.

Winnie is definitely coming into her own in this book. Absolutely a must read. The characters old and new are interesting, fun and evolving. Kyrie, The Vampirate and the cats. Phoenix, Star folk, fairies and humans. What more could you ask for? This book has it all! Twists turns and what the heck moments. You will be riveted. So many feels. One quote hit me right in the heart. ““Then, if hope doesn’t fill the void, you embrace what you’ve become because of it,” he said.” Kimbra has raised the bar in Second Site and I’m completely invested in Winnie’s story.

This story keeps aging like a fine Merlot

Second Sight delivers all I have come to expect from Kimbra Swain: experiencing the unexpected at every turn. It is filled with creative surprises as it moves both the characters and the plot forward. I especially love how how the author honors the different traditions and pantheons of the world and seamlessly weaves them into her story. Winnie is proving to be one of my favorite characters. I'm loving being part of her growth. Warning: this book is filled with the feels...I found myself moved to tears a number of times from start to finish. I already can't wait for the next installment!

Ms. Season did it again. She gave us another strong female hero. She gave us a woman doing what needs to be done to save her family. Ms. Swain took us on an emotional ride full of twists and turns.

I thought the book started out slow. It took a chapter of two before I couldn't put it down. I liked how she brought in the characters from the Trailerverse.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books from the Supernatural/Fantasy genre that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Without a doubt, Winnie is my favorite character of Kimbra's. She's tough, resourceful, and she's been through hell. Many authors use their 'spin-off' characters for secondary adventures. Minor stuff compared to what the main crew is doing. Kimbra does not do that. Winnie battles a demon, learns some things about herself, and loses a piece of herself all in one book. It's a crazy fun read, and one I think everyone will enjoy.

Between searching for her missing brother, researching who make up the current membership of the ORCs, and facing down a new threat gunning for her, Winnie's world explodes with far reaching consequences. This results in her bouncing around realms, further expanding this universe in new and interesting ways. With danger, heartbreak, and darkness around every corner, Winnie's growth takes a turn in which she will never say never, leaving us to wonder what is next. Fantastic read.

More magic and fairy tales

Ms. Again continues to raise the bar in her story telling. Winnie is her own wonderful self and the bad times just keep coming. Collum is still missing, but she has some knowledge of where. She and a valiant group continue to fight and protect the town and the realm. There is a new man in town, who has come to assist Winnie and to teach her. Jump on, read the book and then bite your nails until the next one is published.

Where are my tissues!!!!!!

Kimbra has done it again. Adventure, love, loss and hope. Winnie goes thru it all in this book. Kyrie has said I love you to Winnie, but she has held back. Until she dies again. This time it broke a bond that was keeping her safe. In the process she realizes how much she lives Kyrie. Only to have taken from her.
Once again Kimbra draws you in so far that your heart cried along with Winnie and her struggles. Onward to book 3.

More frost and fire

The Phoenix is battling multiple fronts against known and unknown adversaries. Based on references in the story, it is probably past time for me to find a reading order for this series and the other series set in this universe. For me, the books are starting to feel a little formulaic but the emotional content and urban fantasy conflicts keep it interesting.

OMG!!

This book was totally AMAZEBALLS!! We get to see Winnie mature more and we learn more about Seamus the Vampirate. The story is very fast-paced, and it leaves you wanting more, which is just what a good book should do. Thank you again, Ms. Swain, for inviting us into your world and letting us read your wonderful stories!

AMAZING!

From cliffhanger to CLIFF HANGER... this book has been a “shut up, hold my beer and watch this!” Thrill ride.

I love the never-never, neverland and wonderland references, as well as the Jedi references.

My only fault- unresolved questions... now I am anxiously awaiting the next part of the drama...

I'm loving this spin-off series about Winnie from Kimbra Swain. The characters are learning and revealing more about themselves and there are definite surprises in store. It was great visiting with old friends as well as being introduced to new. My emotions were on a rollercoaster and I may have yelled at the author a time or two as I was reading, especially when I turned the page and there weren't any more. It went by much too quickly and I can't wait for the next installment.

Excellent

I’m not sure what touched me the most the words and feeling in the epilogue or the authors notes at the end. God bless you and keep you safe. I’m sure you know this already but you did your Memaw proud. ( and I know that you know that is a proper sentence here in the South)

Second Sight flows beautifully with the entire "trailer-verse."
It begins with Stories of a Trailer Park Queen series, then this series and the Dog River Wolfpack series (the last two should be read together, in the order of publication, in my opinion), and the reader gets lost in an entirely different world.
The characters are deep and rich, and you're sure to see them again.

Just finished the two book series about Winnie's adventures in her fairy immigration company. Very entertaining and unusual. I wish Winnie had a few more books of her own!

It was almost as satisfying as a Grace and Levi book16. I would have liked to know how Lillian turned out as well.

I love this book! Winnie is really starting to grow up and accept her position in the world. She still has those immature moments from a young woman who is approximately 19 to 20 years old. This story has it all: tears and laughter. Plus, a little bit of Neverland. Releases Feb 4th.

Winnie’s thirst to prove herself as a leader, as the Phoenix and as not just the adopted daughter of the Queen of Winter leads her to make decisions that teach her to be less impulsive. Another good read in this series
