Cornish Cream Tea with a dollop of death on the side.
When a body is found in her sister's bakery, Morgana rushes to Ellie’s aid. She’s supposed to have ‘abilities’ to see more than most, but she’s suppressed them for years. However, if she wants to help Ellie, then it’s time to dust off her pointy hat and get back on that metaphorical broomstick.
With her brother-in-law in custody, her wicked twin back in town, not to mention a smoking hot chef raising her temperature, Morgana has more than enough to distract her. Can she hone her skills again in time to find the real murderer?
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery with three witchy sisters - twins Morgana and Morwenna and their kid sister Ellie - all of whom are in their 20s living their own lives. Morgana owns a witchy shop in Portmage, and her sister Ellie runs the local bakery. One morning, they find a dead body in the bakery, and Ellie's husband Gregory is accused of murder. Morgana and her sisters have to help find the real murderer before it's too late. Lot's of witchy fun.
I needed some light relief after a hard week at work and this book did just that. I finished it in a day. Some of the plot was a bit far fetched but then it was a book with witches in it…
This was a great beginning to a new series for me. This story contains some really great strong female characters that I began to really care for, and one very cranky and picky cat. It of course has a little bit of paranormal thrown in with the mystery. The small town, hometown vibe was really great and I loved it. The romance is small in this book and I'm assuming it grows with each book in the series? All in all would highly recommend.
Body at the Bakery (A Cornish Witch Mystery Book 1) by Stella Berry
A body is found in the freezer of Morgana's Sister (Ellie) Bakery. Morgana wants to help, she is not an ordinary woman, she is a Witch. It is not long before her sisters husband is accused of the murder, and it is up to Morgana to find the real killer. To complicate matters Morgana's wicked twin sister comes to town to add mayhem to the already complicated situation.
A fast paced story with an interesting plot. The Sisters are likable, each with their own magical personalities. The mystery to solve has some twists, easy to follow and a likable handsome Police Chief. I found Body at the Bakery an enjoyable read, and feel those who like a cozy mystery (with Witches) will enjoy it as well.
The somewhat unusual storyline has a good mix of murder and magic with a sprinkle of humor and romance with a twist at the end that you definitely won't see coming. Well worth a read, Baz
Extremely enjoyable indeed. Morgana enjoys her life in Cornwall, owning and running her own little shop dealing in witchy things and aimed mainly at the tourist market and living with her cat Lancelot. Her mother, an artist, lives nearby and her eldest sister Ellie runs a local cafe. Ellie has just hired a new baker and is trying to set Morgana up with him but all comes to a halt when Ellie enters the bakery one morning and opens the fridge to have a body fall out on her. No one recognises the girl until a photo is shown to her husband - who runs his own chain of bakeries in Bristol - who recognises a secretary who used to work for him and his old partner. Things go downhill from here on until Geoffrey finds himself under arrest for murder, Ellie can't cope and it is left to Morgana and her mother to look after things and find out the truth. An excellent read for an evening, and I am glad that this is one of a growing number of books set in the UK (or Australia) which uses UK or Australian terminology and spellings. Nothing spoils the setting more than constantly being jerked out of the story by phrases or words that simply would never be used in that country. I really enjoyed reading this and hope to start reading the second in the series later this week. Highly recommended.
A good start. Perhaps a bit too drawn out as it seemed likely who the culprit was the more you read even if the motive wasn't clear. A plot of greed, murder and malice. The characters just seem a bit stereotypical of what you would expect from three witch sisters and need a bit more oomph to make them stand out a bit more. Our FMC is the twin who tries not to use her power as they have never been strong in the first place. However when her elder sister finds a body in her walk in fridge at the bakery and then her husband is arrested, she knows that a bit of questioning has to be done. The arrival of her flamboyant twin always throws sparks into life and now at the start of a new relationship it's not what she wants. A receipt, greed and a set up lead to her finally working out who and how. The why still leaves her wondering. Can they catch the killer and get a confession that will stand?
This book is so full of warmth and charm. Based in Cornwall, 3 witch sisters (way better than the charmed ones) must solve the mystery of the body in the bakery. Each character lovingly developed with their owns loveable foibles. No surprising, Mog was my favourite character, overcoming her own difficulties with her powers. However I wouldn't kick Tristan out of bed 😳😳
The story telling very reminiscent of Marian Keyes and I was delighted to see other stories of the Cornish witches ready to devour on amazon.
The descriptions of the Cornish coast were perfect for a warm garden read and the humour a welcome lighthearted, change to the gritty crime and hard-core fantasy so often reviewed. Can not wait to jump in to more mischief with Mog. It would go perfectly with a cream tea ❤
Perfect 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me. You won't regret this one, I promise.
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters and a fun and entertaining storyline. Magana is a witch in a little small coastal southern Englishtown. The town has a lot of magical mystical history and still has a few witches living around it. Morga owns a little mystical souvenir shop along the main street and her sister owns a local bakery. Her familiar a cat named Lancelot and her live above her shop. She helps solve a mystery to find out who is responsible for a dead body that showed up in her sisters bakery. It is a cute and entertaining story with fun characters and a bit of magic. Check it out
This would easily be a 5-star cozy mystery if the author could use a semicolon correctly. Punctuation errors abound, and almost all involve the use of commas instead of semicolons to separate disparate phrases in a single sentence.
References to an earlier mystery made me thing this was Book 2 in a series, but it's apparently the first.
The author does capture village life, sibling rivalry, and psychic abilities well. Names, settings, and plot lines fit nicely; one could easily be convinced the police have got the right culprit.
A story about witches where the witches , especially Morgan's don't act like typical witches. There were a few grammatical errors and one instance when Morgana was referred to as Morwena. Despite these, the story was sufficiently easy to read and held my interest. The identity of the murderer was not difficult to work out but that did make the story any less interesting. Well-developed characters for whom the reader can create visual images as they are introduced.
Morgana is unique, to say the least. As a matter of fact, her whole family is unique. And when her brother in law is accused of murder, the family stands together to clear him, using their unique skills. There are interesting plot twists and interactions between the characters. I enjoyed the book, and if you are interested in reading a good story with Interesting characters, I believe that you will enjoy it too.
This book was a fun, quick read for me. The main character Morgana is so much fun! She is a which who can use her third eye to see things about you. Her and her family live in a small town and they are all witches. Morgana always seems to find herself getting involved with the murder investigations and using her powers to help. I can’t wait to finish the rest of the series!
It's a wonderful brilliant read! I especially loved the characters of Morganna and her twin Morwenna. Their banter is so amusing and funny. A dead body is discovered in Morganna's Elder sister Ellie's bakery. Her husband Gregory is taken into custody. Morganna decides to investigate and the events that follow are super exciting and beyond imagination. The climax was too good and the murderer turned out to be an unexpected one. Brilliantly written.
Stella Berry is a fabulous para cozey mystery murder writer it's wonderful how well she's started off this series getting to know all the mane characters vibrant, colorful, witchy sisters, all wild in their own way and being reminded family supports family, know one messes with family. Following along trying to slowly piece together what really happened Saturday night, it truly very well written giving you a truly enjoyable read.🙂😯🥺🤔😏😀Kat
When a dead body shows up in the freezer of her sister's bakery, Morgana finds herself trying to solve the murder. While Morgana and her sister are both witches, that doesn't play into the plot as much as Morgana's drive to solve it. The witchcraft plays more of a background character throughout most of the book, so those that love cozy mysteries but aren't into the paranormal as much can enjoy it along side those that enjoy witches and all the craziness they tend to bring.
I started this book thinking it was the first in the series, so I was confused at first by references to an earlier mystery. That said, this is an engaging story with interesting characters and a flavor of Cornwall. The recipe at the end was a nice touch too. I'll be reading more of this series.
I gave five stars because it was a good story🥰 I like this book. It combines a little of witchiness with mystery and baking as well. I think that Stella writes with humor and enthusiasm into her books. The characters were well rounded and the story keeps you guessing who is the killer right to the end🥰
Can a murder mystery be cute? Because that’s how I would describe this! Maybe it’s the cover that gives me that vibe, but this was a cute murder mystery. The village of Portmage sounds idyllic and the fact that it’s got witches that the community is aware of makes it better. I enjoyed this book a lot as a quick, fun read, that was also a murder mystery.
This is a gorgeous murder mystery with a little bit of witchy goodness. Really enjoyable read with strong, female characters, loving family bond with a true sense of sibling rivalry. And yes, even though you might guess the murderer, it still has a few *gasps* moments. Highly recommend. I love this book & will be buying the complete series asap xo
Morgana and her sister, Elaine, are more than shocked to find the body of a young woman in their bakery's freezer. Signs point to Elaine's husband since the dead woman was once his secretary. It was hard for them to believe he was guilty so the two women set out to uncover the murderer. A nice cozy mystery!!
Fun little paranormal cozy mystery featuring three witchy sisters. Unfortunately, it was chock full of comma splices, which nearly had me giving up at chapter two. They didn't get any better, but I'd give the desire another chance.
This book had enough unique characters and interesting turns that it doesn't feel like a cookie cutter mystery of the many witch cozy mysteries in this genre. I loved the King Author backstory connections. Lots of creativity in this series.
Morgan's has to help her sister who's husband has been accused of murder. You'd think that a witch would be able to "see" who was guilty. Very tense! You'll never guess!
This had everything I like in a mystery and none of the stuff I dislike. The plot was pretty decent. The setting and the characters were well done. I truly enjoyed it from start to finish.
I gave 5 stars because it was a good story. However toward the end, I connect the characters. Did I miss it? Who was Marianne? Was it Kendra's sister? Mother? Or no kin at all? Oh well it was a good story anyway.
With no knowledge of this area of the world, I still felt immediately at home with the lead character Morgana and all of the town folk...Written with windows into personality and human interaction, this book was a joy to read from beginning to end!
A delightfully witchy mystery about a local girl who takes it upon herself to solve the murder of the body in the bakery and thus freeing her brother-in-law from the murder charge. An intriguing read that leaves one guessing till the end on who the murderer is.
