Colonel Sean Quinn is stranded in another universe, along with two thousand people under his command. They've been hiding from the enemy long enough, now it’s time to return home. Outnumbered against a superior foe, Sean must risk everything in a daring operation, but the mysterious enemy has a few surprises of their own.

Meanwhile, a division threatens to tear the colony apart and Connor Gates is caught in the middle. Their best chance to prepare for a formidable multidimensional aggressor is to form an alliance with one of their victims, but the more they learn about New Earth's inhabitants, the more resistant to an alliance the colonial government becomes.

When a shadow group seeks to undermine the alliance, Connor must do what he swore he would never do in order to protect the colony. For Connor, the stakes have never been so high or so personal. The price will be paid by everyone if he fails.

I gave Book 7 in the series the lowest rating possible because nothing was resolved. The author just stopped writing. I understand the nature of series. Some aspect of the plot is left unresolved, but book 7 was ridiculous. Book 8 was short, but it was a complete book.

.

If you have read 7 of these books, you definitely have to read Fracture, but for the reason previously stated (spoiler), I can’t give this book more than three stars.

Good Read!

This is a rarity for me ( I mean a book review). I'm 65 years old and still remember how much I hated book reviews in elementary and junior high schools. But, this series is too good not to let folks who want pure enjoyable escapeism know about it. The story line is great with well developed characters and imaginative locations. I'm on to book 9.

Fracture: First Colony — Book Eight by Ken Lozito is an outstanding continuation of the series, raising the stakes in every possible way. This installment masterfully blends political intrigue, tactical warfare, and deeply personal character arcs into one of the most compelling entries yet.

Conor’s storyline is a standout, as his carefully orchestrated plan to uncover and expose the hidden intelligence agency unfolds with precision and intensity. What makes this arc so gripping is the constant sense of risk—every move he makes feels like it could tip the balance, and the deeper he digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes. It’s a brilliant exploration of strategy, trust, and the cost of pulling back the curtain.

John Walker’s role in Operation Sherlock brings a thrilling, high-tech edge to the narrative. The Raven-class scout ship is central to this mission, and Lozito does a fantastic job of making the operation feel both grounded and suspenseful. The pacing during these sequences is razor-sharp, and the tactical decisions keep you fully engaged. Walker’s leadership and decisiveness shine, making him one of the most compelling figures in this installment.

Sean’s involvement with the emerging Krake faction adds another layer of complexity to an already rich story. This new faction is unpredictable and intriguing, shifting the balance of power in ways that keep the reader constantly guessing. The tension surrounding their intentions—and Sean’s place within it—creates a sense of unease that works perfectly with the book’s themes of fragmentation and uncertainty.

Noah’s recovery from his coma is one of the more emotionally resonant threads in the book. His journey back isn’t easy, and Lozito takes the time to show how deeply the experience has affected him. It adds a human element to the larger, high-stakes conflict and gives the story real emotional weight.

Overall, Fracture lives up to its title—alliances strain, truths splinter, and the future of the colony feels more uncertain than ever. With expertly woven plotlines, strong character development, and relentless tension, this is a five-star read and a must for fans of the First Colony series.

I mostly liked this book as well as previous ones. However, there is an exception, the Sean Quinn story line.

***Spoilers ***

Sean, in this book, goes back to being an entitled asshole who treats people as mindless puppets. I was disappointed that the book didn't address this at all, but instead presented him as a hero.

Sean makes a questionable decision, and after his second in command privately voices the crews concern, Sean tells his SECOND IN COMMAND, and a friend apparently, to shut up and do as he's told, cause Sean's the boss and what he says goes.

Now while that's all technically true, military commanders tend to talk things out amongst themselves. The commander gets the final say, they tend to be more explany to their 2ic's and more understanding in working with them. Telling them to f off and follow orders does not make for a good working relationship, which in this case, leads to a mutiny. After surpassing the mutiny, Sean has a good hard look at his actions and in a nod to Principle Skinner, he decides that "no, it is the children who are wrong!" and amazingly enough, his civilian girl friend is fine with it. Not only that, she is cool with him flushing people out the airlock in an execution.

I was appalled that his actions were justified by the book, and he was applauded by non military personnel. Also no one mentioned captain Ahab...

Fractured thoughts & people

Connor is finding fractions within the colony, the Ovarrow and to an unknown extent the CDF itself. Despite the grave warnings Connor gives people, a growing number of the community is starting to lean towards Lars & his splinter group.
In the meantime Sean is keeping the missing battle group together as best he can while unrest is brewing.
Connor is very determined to find Lars & the other fugitives before they can prevent any further peaceful interactions between the humans and the alien Ovarrow, much less form any kind of cooperation with them.

At this point, it's almost a bit comical how the author's total wish fulfillment, Gary Stu main characters are written. They're strong, tall, handsome, smart, and always right. The people that disagree with them are mean, stupid, nasty, and ugly. Their wives are always hot and smart, too, but they never *really* push back on them enough to feel like real people.

The character work in these books is nonsense, but hey, if you're already seven books in, you know that already.

3 stars because, despite the amount of times I'm rolling my eyes at some new description of just how perfect and competant Connor is, the plot is just fast-paced enough, and the world-building is just interesting enough to keep me going. These books are fast, easy reads, and as long as I don't expect too much, I can't really be let down. And truly, I do love some of these characters (not you, Connor, never you).

Long winded

I took a break from this series due to dislikes that I couldn't get over. I saw that the latest book is a return to Earth which I had previously said was an almost overlooked plot line.

Now this book, well more drama than action. More power struggles and political nonsense through out. Tons of words that can be skipped, unnecessary is an understatement. Author really needs to cut out a lot of the soapie style melodrama.

Not much really happens to further theain storyline until the end, under Sean's chapters. Noah is still an annoying character.

"Fracture" continues the adventure of the surviving humans on New Earth. General Gates is worried Col. Quinn might be stranded in another universe. But expecting the Krake to attack sometime soon he is even more distracted by the Politics involving the Ovarrow. Can they help or will they be a bother to contend.
The series is becoming more complex, now dealing with Politics and internal human strife. All in all a great book.

Intriguing

There’s a lot to like about this book and series that brings human relationships frailties, strengths and courage into unknown worlds and universes. Strange and exciting concepts that have integrity and imagination to continually maintain and interest to keep on reading.

Another cracking book in the series. What I particularly liked was that Lozito didn't go with what may have felt like the obvious outcome to the main story within this book, and what he did felt surprising yet also right. I am (as if it weren't obvious by the fact that I'm still invested in the series) hooked!

still thrilling me after 8

Even after 8 boos, I want more. It seems each book opens up even more avenues to go down in future stories. I guess that’s a smart thing to do as author, however you still need to make each book at entertaining as the previous or even better. That’s what he did here. I can’t wait to keep finding out more about this world he created.

Solid

While not the strongest book in the series, fracture builds upon the story thus far and gives meaningful resolution to the Lars arc. I'm excited to see where Ken takes the story from here

A frActure of factions

Murphy's law in action with groups. The factions include the military, government and a rougue GroupWise the ovarow. There was even a Krake group fighting another. So to put it back together and build trust is an immense challenge. Rehab or airlock.

Arguably the best book in the series so far. The characters continue to be well rounded, realistic and suitably complex and the story benefits from dividing it’s attention between various intriguing subplots.

This book pays off a lot of the set up in the previous few, so is a fast paced and satisfying read. There is one thing that seems a little out of character, but perhaps will be explained in the next book. I suppose I had better start it and find out!

Great continuation of the story however I disagree with an action of one of the main characters. I feel he wouldn't have made that choice.

The internal strife reaches a breaking point. The enemy within is a bigger threat to both the CDF and the fleet lost in another universe.
