Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit.
Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.
In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding.
Potter eventually published 24 children's books, the most recent being The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots (2016), and having become financially independent of her parents, was able to buy a farm in the Lake District, which she extended with other purchases over time.
In her forties, she married a local solicitor, William Heelis. She became a sheep breeder and farmer while continuing to write and illustrate children's books. Potter died in 1943 and left almost all of her property to The National Trust in order to preserve the beauty of the Lake District as she had known it, protecting it from developers.
Potter's books continue to sell well throughout the world, in multiple languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats, including a ballet, films, and in animation.
Here’s one for all the Beatrix Potter fans — a gorgeous illustrated hardcover book that you and your young reader could follow together, a story a day.
There’s a very distinctly classic vibe to these new tales centering around Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and their families. They continue to scamper away from Mr. McGregor and wily Mr. Tod the Fox. But we get to visit with Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mr. Jeremy Fisher and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
The nostalgia is REAL.
What I appreciate most, is the continuous manner the stories go from one to the next, where a favour is returned, or mince pie ingredients get cooked further down the line 🤫😋 it’ll be so so lovely for the young reader to follow and to return to every day.
Friendship, family and love resonate very strongly at the end of the 25 days.
Utterly charming, and there’s a totally do-able activity (as opposed to pretty but impractical ones 😂) you can do with your child. Hey, why not make a colourful pasta necklace for Mummy or a rabbit bookmark for Dad this season?
This is best for a project with boys and girls 3-7 this stay home year’s end, or a gift for our lower primary readers.
Okay so I’ll hold my hands up and say I am not a child (a big one maybe) but I have a special place in my heart for Peter rabbit. And it’s Christmas so I embraced my inner child and relived the magic of my favourite fictional rabbit!
Love the sprinkling of Christmas in this as we mark each day of December until the run up to Christmas. Each day sees a brand new story on each day of December, as Peter prepares his gifts for his family, visits some lovable friends and partakes in all the wonders of Christmas (and of course, snow!)
Safe to say, I loved it and my inner child is happy!
I am always on the lookout for new Chrisms book and am so happy to have discovered Peter Rabbit: Christmas is Coming. This book features 24 stories to be read leading up to Christmas day. The book is beautifully illustrated. In addition, each story is accompanied by an activity ranging from crafts, recipes, songs. The supplies required for these activities are easy to find and the instructions are very clear. It is a great find and I look forward to gifting this book to loved ones.
Samuel says, " This was a really fun book. I love reading Beatrix Potter stories." Mary says, "This was a splendid and fun book. I loved reading each interconnected story, one for each day of December 1 thru December 25. Reading with my son Sam made me happy and helped us both get prepared and excited to celebrate this wonderful Christmas season together." Making precious memories.💚😊❤️
The best Christmas book for kids and adults. I love these stories and activity parts of the book. Illustrations by Beatrix Potter are awesome as always ❤️☺️
