This is a review of the current series so far as it's sort of on hold I assume largely due to the real-world events forcing many ongoing comics into a temporary hiatus. So keep that in mind if this is read in the future when the assumed issue 8 and beyond are out there!
Bitter Root is excellent. The same creative duo that brought the excellent Power Man and Iron Fist are working together once again on a series with some great racism metaphors. The Sangeryes are a family of monster hunters primarily specializing in hunting something known as the Jinoo. Unlike a typical monster, however, Jinoo are actually people who have been corrupted, so they can't exactly kill them. They have to work on curing them with the titular bitter roots, and in case it wasn't already clear that's all a metaphor for racism being a force that corrupts regular people. And considering this story takes in the 20's it's also clear that for all their efforts this isn't a war that they're winning. The rising tide of racism means more and more Jinoo are showing up every day and the already-struggling family has to work extra hard to do what they can to stem the tide.
But there's also a very, very interesting wrinkle to all of this. Jinoo are only white people, but that's because it turns out that when a black person is corrupted in the same manner, they become something far worse. One of the villains was a survivor of the Tulsa race massacre (A real, horrific event in American history) and the experience corrupted him so thoroughly he seeks only violent revenge against all white people, not just the Jinoo, or the ones responsible for the event.
All around Bitter Root is a great story (so far) full of fantastic racism metaphors that I'd absolutely recommend to someone interested in the idea. I've heard there's supposedly going to be an adaptation of this at some point but haven't looked into the status of that, really. I'll definitely watch it if it ever surfaces, though!
