Every great play needs a drama queen. Preferably alive.

The French city of Avignon is known for many things: its Papal Palace, the annual summer theatre festival, its Medieval bridge of nursery rhyme fame…and now murder.

When a popular actress is killed during the town’s summer theater festival on Avignon’s famous medieval bridge, all the evidence points directly at Maggie.
In order to prove her innocence she will have to wade through the foreign and often cut-throat world of actors, directors and festival organizers to find the killer who wanted the city’s most popular actress dead—and why.

Will Maggie be able to prove her innocence? And can she do it before the grape harvest begins and Luc heads off to college? Or has this expat amateur sleuth finally hit her last snag?

I love the books in this series, I’ve read all17,18? Of them. They just keep getting better! Handsome french husband , a winery, settings all over France and a murder mystery is always a good read. I wish I could read them a little slower😊

Another great murder mystery in this wonderful series

Another great mystery in this series.

Hard to believe that I've been reading (inhaling?) Maggie Newberry mysteries for a good ten years, pre-ordering them as fast as the author can get them published! I almost hated to start this one since I knew the next one wouldn't appear till January 2021. But start it I did and of course couldn't put it down till I finished it.

In this "episode" Maggie has gone to Avignon, a beautiful city on the Rhône where the Popes resided for a time before ending up in the Vatican. The Palace du Papes dominates the city (almost as famous is the bridge in the children's song, Sur le Pont, D'Avignon). Maggie is without the assistance of husband, children, or dear friends in this story. Laurent has taken Luc to an internship in California and Mila to visit her grandparents in Atlanta. Maggie went to Avignon to meet a woman (Suzanne) during the city's annual theater festival who promised to connect Maggie with potential readers of Maggie's newsletter about an ex-pat living in Provence. Of course there was a murder and Suzanne, having heard about Maggie's sleuthing, begs Maggie to clear the name of her friend. The twists and turns of this mystery were totally engrossing, many possible suspects, police who seem only too eager to close their case, and all taking place in a city I adore. Maggie, as usual, puts herself in danger as she painstakingly follows the clues.

This has to be one of my favorites in this series (#17) reading it in the middle of a pandemic and wishing I could be living in Provence instead of the U.S. And now having to wait 6 more months for the next one, Murder in the Lavender. Be safe my friends.

Murder in Avignon is the seventeenth book in the Maggie Newberry Mysteries by Susan Kiernan-Lewis.
The Maggie Newberry series of books by Susan Kiernan-Lewis turned out to be a great cozy mystery series that kept me engrossed the whole way through. Throughout the series we follow thirty-something, Maggie Newberry, an advertising copywriter who has been unlucky in love. Her ‘normal’ life gets upended when her sister, who has been missing for quite some time, turns up dead. Then to add an extra layer of complication, Maggie must now travel to Frace to locate her young niece that she didn’t even know existed. Arriving in France, thing take a dangerous turn when her sister’s murderer then sets his sights on Maggie and her niece. Add in a sexy Frenchman to add a little extra layer of intrigue, plenty of dramatic developments, secrets, lies, crime & investigation, and the story takes an engrossing turn.
From book #2 onwards-
Maggie’s sexy (French) boyfriend, who we met in the first instalment has inherited an ancient vineyard in a small rural village in France- so Maggie quits her job and sets off for a year abroad. But trouble soon follows, when a vicious murder takes place, thrusting them into the middle of an investigation that links to a 50year-old murder. What happens makes for intriguing reading….and so the series unfolds, with each book bringing another cozy mystery for Maggie to investigate. Sprinkled with mystery suspense, tension, drama, danger, romance, marriage, motherhood, travel, and recipes- made this series a memorable read. It is a light-hearted and enjoyable series, the ‘clean’ stories mean there are no sexy times, violence, or profanity.

Happy Reading…

Thank you, Susan Kiernan-Lewis!

I enjoy reading the Maggie Newberry stories.
I especially enjoyed reading about Avignon, a place I have always heard about (sung the song as a kid) and always wanted to visit, Not sure if that is possible right now. In fact the festival this year was cancelled due to the virus.
I liked this story but not crazy about the ending and who the killer was. it certainly was surprising,
So a bit of suspense trying to figure who the bad guy/girl was but it was a good read.

Can.t wait for the next maggie Newberry, now that the kids are older and wanting independence in their lives.
Now I am waiting for book #18.

Amazing!

Once again Susan has you guessing who is behind all this chaos. She is so very good at making all the characters seem guilty at some point in the story. And then she reveals who the culprit is and you're saying I never guessed that! Simply astounding! I would like to know what made Laurent extend his stay in California, though.

Just wow! I never expected the ending!!! Amazing read from start to finish I was SAT.

I CANNOT BELIEVE WHO IT WNDED UP BEING. I was trying so hard not to be swayed by the author and actually figure it out myself but for the life of me I couldn’t
