From the first book to the last the entire series was awesome. All the characters were realistically amazing. It was at times funny and quite mysterious. It had twist I didn't see coming. From the mystical town and inhabitants, to the mortal town, the acceptance, joy and final mystery made it a really good read. Trust me all will enjoy the series. I can't wait to read Susan Harper's next series.
The story line for the 12 books was fine. The introduction of new characters in later books added to the story. My biggest problem was the amount of grammatical errors. I found them to be distracting and that diminished my enjoyment of the stories. With the online tools available today, these errors could have easily been fixed.
It's not been edited properly and abounds with errors. Sentences and paragraphs that make little sense and some really glaring continuity issues.. like Eli the onocentaur whose entire family was wiped out according to page 157 yet somehow has recently visited and is forming a relationship with his biological parents some 200 pages later.. it's not the only error of its kind but it does rather leap off the page.
A good editor would have picked up on the "too numerous to list" grammatical errors, helped the author establish more natural dialogue between characters and correct the many issues with sentence structure. All too often there are extra words where it appears Harper couldn't decide which to use so stuck both in, had basic issues with sentence structure and missed out or confused similar words.
That said the series was mildly amusing if rushed and wasn't so dire I gave up reading it. I did make my way to the very end. It's a shame Harper didn't make more of her idea. The Abigail Williams narrative could have been so much more than it is.
Some of the books are much better than others. Unfortunately the time travel episode was one of the worst for convenient clues and ill conceived plotlines. After all why would a witch hater use magic and how in the 17th century could someone from Salem acquire a magically imbued necklace and powers from a slave in Barbados? Sloppy writing.
The finale was too twee and cutesy, and really do we need to end everything with a Disney Princess and they lived happily ever after.. pass the sick bowl now!
Having said that I am giving it a middle of the road rating as it's not anywhere near the worst thing I've read..
I do believe that the author needs a new, stronger editor to give her guidance and support to improve her grammar and dialogue issues.. advice to any current or budding author: don't rely on friends, family and followers for editing or proofreading they are never able to step away from their personal feelings enough to provide an honest, unbiased review and asking them to deliberately point out mistakes rarely achieves a well edited novel.
Engaging characters, a little more editing would have been nice
Engaging characters, intriguing mysteries, and wonderful worldbuilding makes for an excellent series. I would be happy to see this as a series on the small screen ( Netflix, take note!)
If only this author had a good continuity editor, I could have given it five stars with enthusiasm!
Unfortunately, almost every book after the third had some kind of glaring continuity error. Mona's engagement that disappeared. Grace's surprise name change. The semi finals game that happened twice. It was all rather jarring. It's a testament to the otherwise excellent writing that I was able to let it go and enjoy the series despite the glaring errors.
I couldn’t help but compare the attitude of the Remembrance group with any hate groups who need to tear down the worth and dignity of anyone who doesn’t agree with them. The diverse Werewolf team with so many different mystical and mortal team members getting along and working together is truly how the world should be with everyone respecting others differences and caring for one another. Hatred and elitism have no place in society. It is not naïveté to believe and live the belief that goodness and truth will win out. It will. This series of books show its never going to be easy, but it’s always worth the effort
I read this entire series, as I started on book 1, I got hooked. This is truly a great and one of a kind read for the whole family. Action, a love story, and mystery. It has it all. The story and characters that met under good and weird ways. But that's what makes this an exceptional read. As the two worlds collide and time travel to see why things have happened. You will fall in love with all the characters and when the end comes you still want more but alas all good things do come to an end and the ending was just so perfect. Hope you take my advice and buy this whole series.
Had I not gotten the set I would have stopped at book one and given it two stars. However, as the series progressed the writing got much better and the story line became more in-depth with more interest and protagonists. The first few books were too much unicorns and rainbows and seemed childish, but as the author progressed they improved greatly. I think the author shouldn't have rushed the first three books into print but taken more time and had more editing done. It might be a good idea for her to revisit the first three books and rewrite them so that readers older than ten will be willing to stick with the series.
What an amazing series! I have been wrapped up in it and have had trouble putting it down from the moment I picked it up. It's definitely face paced, funny, well written. The characters are well thought out. The way the whole thing comes together is just amazing. I can hardly wait for the new series! This is the second series I have read from this Author and she does not disappoint.
I loved it. Lots of mystery, twists and turns, action, romance and stacks of humor. The characters are charming and one can easily identify with them. I just couldn't put the book down (all 12 books), spent lots of pleasurable reading hours devouring the adventures of Monica and everybody else.
Fun, funny and fantastic stories. Can't wait for more adventures from Susan Harper, hopefully with this cast of characters. I will definitely be checking out her other books.
All r reader will love this set. Fun interactions between all characters and storylines. Love the twists and turns that poke fun at each other and people they meet along the way.
This was exactly what I expected it to be—a series of entertaining, lighthearted, paranormal mysteries. Each story stands alone, but the collection has a strong through-line.
While I think that overall this would have benefited from a little stronger editing/proofreading, it’s a solid collection of fun stories.
This is an awesome series one you won’t want to stop reading until you’ve done them all. They can be read as individual books but you get so much more out of reading in order. No sexual references or language so I easy recommend this to my preteen advanced reading friends.
I chose 5 stars because if I begin a series and I don't immediately fall in love with the characters I don't follow the authors even though I might finish the first book.. I read all 12 books in the series and would recommend to all who happen to read this genre.
I enjoyed this series. The character development and descriptions were very good, and the storylines entertaining, if a little (quite, at times) predictable. Some further editing would have been nice, the typographical and grammatical errors were a bit distracting to me.
This set of books was really fun to read. You enjoyed the characters so much and loved the magic. I never wanted them to end. What a neat idea to have a mortal bookstore as a front to a Mystic bookstore with it all being built over a portal to the magical world. It was fun to read and loved all their adventures.
Susan lead you from one book to the next beautifully. She brought in all the paranormal creatures and blended them with humans and myth . I'm looking forward to her taking the characters into more adventures and mis-advdntutes.
This was a fun series to read. Each book is a novella about 100 pages long so they move pretty fast. I enjoyed these books a lot. The only thing that was annoying, and this is because I read them back to back, is the repeated refresher in each book about the characters.
These books are well written as are the characters. You get to explore two worlds one magic one normal, with murder in both worlds. This is truly a fabulous adventure and I highly recommended these books.
Wonderful set of books to take you on a path less travelled
Each one of these books is a stand alone story, the real vs. Magic or mystic world. Very entertaining. Love the characters, Monica, Mona, Abigail, Brian and all the other colorful characters.
Less than two pages into the books and I was hooked! Each book surprised me with all the minute details of each adventure. I was delighted to read "for now" when you some of 12 being the end of the story.
Great series, likable characters, a few typos that were easy to over look. All the stories were paced well and kept you interested! Nicely tied up at the end with potential for future mysteries.
I found this story sweet heartfelt and lovely the mysteries were well thought out. I was able to not figure out exactly who done it until the end more than once. The author definitely put a lot of thought and energy into these books.
Really enjoyed the whole 12 book set and you need to get it all as it explains so much as you go along. Very interesting characters most out of the ordinary. This isn’t my usual type of reading but I enjoyed it a lot.
This boxed set was an amazing read! I loved every book and couldn't put it down! Loved all of the characters, and was sad to finish. Can hardly wait to read more from this author. You will truly love reading this set of books...enjoy!
Keeps you turning pages. Never boring, no areas you just slim thru. Surprise after surprise! To go from mortal to magical and back is better than a dream come true!
Gripping series. No moment of boredom. Always wanting to read the next chapter and book to see what happens next. A must read for all especially at this time when most of us have time on our hands and not know what to do.
There are too many errors in the first 7-8 bks that should've been caught in proofreading. They kept me from enjoying the stories until about the last 4 of the boxed set.
