A strong...tale of operatic moral corrosion.-Kirkus Reviews on Gods & GangstersJoey Diamonds is on the verge of being a "Made" man, with ice cold blue eyes that pierce through the hearts of women...and men. After being disowned by his mafia family, losing the love of his life, and realizing the world at large is his enemy, Joey throws extreme caution to the wind on his journey of self-debauchery in the name of fame and fortune. "The Purple Don" is the story of how self-destruction is never simply an internal state, and everyone around can be destroyed in the process. While Joey Diamonds takes over New York, Miami, and Hollywood-aligning with various mobs and nefarious gangs-we learn how the truly ruthless are never out to play checkers. It's always a game of chess.
I saw this book at the library and picked it up on a whim. The storyline is great! That I would give 5 stars!! It had me hooked from the beginning. Lots of twists and turns, I couldn't put it down. It is extremely graphic though! A LOT more that rated R, more like rated X. Graphic sex, rape, and violence. That will turn a lot of people off, not sure who I would feel comfortable referring this one to. I did really enjoy the story though.... Now I have to go wash my brain.
Joey Diamonds is the son of a prominent New York mob boss and a gangster in his own right. Things, however, get turned upside down when his father finds out that his son is bisexual and effectively disowns him. When members of Joey's crew as well as his boyfriend are gunned down, he takes revenge by ruthlessly taking over the entire mafia.
It takes a lot to shock me and there were parts of this book that had my jaw on the floor! Nevertheless, I was glued to the page the entire time. This book had plenty of graphic sex, graphic violence, and manipulation! Also, it was great to finally come across a gay book that wasn't political, sentimental, or saccharine and that it's main character wasn't a victim, a doormat, or some one dimensional milquetoast. After his boyfriend is murdered and as the book progresses, Joey hardens and sees everything and everyone as pawn. He becomes drunk upon his own power and his need to dominate the very people who look down on him for his sexuality. This novel is raw! VERY RAW! It paints the criminal underworld and its members realistically. The only criticism I have and why I didn't give this book 5 stars is because there are some spelling and text formatting mistakes in the book. Obviously, the editor wasn't paying much attention but, nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I picked this book up on a whim. The storyline is great! It had me hooked from page 18. Lots of twists and I couldn't put it down. It is extremely graphic though! A LOT more that rated R, more like rated X. Graphic sex, rape, and violence. That will turn a lot of people off. I did really enjoy the story though.... Now I have to go wash my brain.
Joey Diamonds is the son of a crime boss but he’s been disowned because of his “lifestyle”. At first he doesn’t know what to do but after his lover is shot down for simply being his lover, he decides she has to take charge. Hooking up with an old friend he jumps right in & goes on a reign of terror. His plan is to take over. He wants the world to accept him for who & what he is...& they will. He’ll put it in their faces to make sure. He also plans to make sure the underworld pays for kicking him to the curb. He aligns with & disposes of whoever to get what he needs at the moment, without a second thought. This is a rollercoaster ride of adventure going on here. You won’t be disappointed.
