Wow - I would go so far as to say this is a life-changing book. If you are interested in health and functional medicine, or suffering from any kind of medical issue, you must check this out.

If you’ve had any kind of weird physical ailments, fatigue, fibromyalgia, brain fog or similar (*raises hand*) you may have been searching for ways to feel better, and in that search you may already have heard of glutathione. I too knew about it from my own research, but found this book to be by far the most in-depth look at glutathione for non-scientific folks that I’ve ever read.

You should know up front that this author is a pharmacist and is, as he admits, “in the glutathione business” — he sells a transdermal solution. Despite that though, I did not feel this book was giving me the hard sell at all. In fact, it provides many many ways to increase your body’s own production of glutathione through supplementation, nutrition, exercise, sun protection (who knew) and more.

This book accurately reflects my own experience with IV glutathione (effective but only for a few hours) and explains scientifically what that’s true. So don’t go wasting your money on pricey glutathione IVs like I did about three times. It also has a lot of really valuable advice and charts on nutrition, and tons of ideas for increasing glutathione production through food and relatively inexpensive and low-risk supplements.

I am really glad I had the chance to preview this book because it reinforced what I already knew but also expanded my knowledge greatly with much more very accessible science and practicality. I’m going to start trying some of the nutrition and supplementation tips immediately.

Thanks to NetGalley, Nayan Patel and Hachette for this great and informative book. I will let you all know my results!

Do not buy this book! Here's why: it advocates a vegetarian diet which is the very worst diet for supporting your body's production of glutathione. Here's the science, the actual science, not the "Science" TM.
Glutathione is constructed from three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. When you give your body these three building blocks for glutathione, it makes its own without having to buy this author's expensive transdermal solution or go for IV glutathione transfusions which this author advocates which only last for hours.

Want to know how to get those three amino acids? Hopefully, the word amino acid tipped off even the least nutritionally educated among us--that's right, you get those amino acids primarily from ANIMAL foods, since amino acids are what make up protein.

Let's start with glycine, shall we? The best way to get glycine is from the skin and bones of animals. It's also in red meat, fish, milk, and eggs. I make my own homemade chicken and beef broth weekly. For times of sickness, you can also supplement with collagen powder. There are small amounts of glycine in beans, but you have to eat 1 cup of black beans to get 1.12 grams of glycine whereas you can get 13 grams from bone broth.
Next up, let's talk about cysteine, shall we? Guess what foods are the highest in cysteine? Red meat, fish, chicken, eggs, and dairy products. Once again, small amounts can be obtained from eating a whole head of garlic or a mountain of cruciferous vegetables. But the amounts to support glutathione are almost impossible to get from plants alone.
And finally, the amino acid glutamic acid. What are the highest sources? You guessed it: red meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. It is present in small amounts in beans, but not in high enough concentrations to support glutathione production for someone's stores with are depleted.
So why are we being told to avoid meat, the very nutrient the highest in all three amino acids that support glutathione production? Beats me.

This book is junk science, and if you want to a true researcher who will back up everything I've just written, check out Chris MasterJohn PhD. https://chrismasterjohnphd.substack.c.... He has a ton about how to support glutathione through--guess what--eating more eggs, broth with collagen, and red meat.

I happened upon Chris Masterjohn when I was suffering from a prolonged case of the "Wuhan Special," and I began his regimen of greatly increasing my intake of glycine in the form of some collagen powder I had on hand, some homemade broth, and 4 eggs. I also increased my intake of cysteine through the supplement NAC (N acetyl Cysteine). Normally, I plan to keep up my cysteine supply through meat and dairy consumption, but because the Wuhan special had severely depleted my glutathione stores, or so my weeks of exhaustion seemed to indicate, I thought I'd try the supplement. Within a day I felt like a new woman. So I wanted to read more about this glutathione miracle I had just experienced, but found the science in this book woefully lacking. One blog post by Chris Masterjohn is more informative than this entire book.

There are two fascinating medical studies in which researchers gave patients in their 70s supplements of glycine and cysteine (apparently glutamic acid didn't need to be supplemented). After a few weeks, the older people were showing the same levels of glutathione in their bodies as twenty-year olds! Read results here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33783...

One last thought. I normally find that Dr. Mark Hymen has somewhat rational things to say. Why he wrote the forward for this book is completely beyond me. Maybe he became a bit weak-kneed at the thought of receiving some crisp, green bills?

For those interested in health and functional medicine, this is definitely an interesting read. I did not know a lot about glutathione prior to this, so the first part of the book was informative. At points it did feel like a bit of a sales pitch, though the author does recommend some alternative ways of boosting your glutathione other than his own (expensive) products. The action plans at the end I thought were a bit lacking. The meal and exercise plans were very basic and a lot of things recommended I would expect a reader interested in this topic to know already. He does provide some very specific supplement and detox recommendations which I thought were helpful and will definitely refer back to.

I found the title of this book interesting and in very glad I chose to read it. Dr. Nayan Patel, explains glutathione in a way that is understandable by the average person. I look forward to sharing this book with friends and family experiencing diabetes, fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, and so much other health concerns. After reading this book, I looked into the glitter Ffion in more detail and have ordered some to try with my daughter and other family members. This is a worthwhile read, one that will benefit many peoples health. I’m glad this is something coming to light for others to know about.

This is the best health book I've read all year! Dr. Patel's book clearly explains the importance of glutathione for health, and how its lack can cause many types of problems. He explains how to increase your body's own glutathione, as well as how to supplement so that your body can use it. This knowledge will help a lot of people! I highly recommend this book -- I would give it ten stars if I could!

I received a free electronic copy from the publisher, with no expectation of a review. This is my own opinion.

Very well written book explaining in great detail the benefits of glutathione for a wide variety of conditions, and how it is very essential for everyday life. Very informative, packed with good information. After reading this book I have every intention of putting that information to use, because I have a family member with early stage of Parkinson's.

An eye-opening book that gives good knowledge that all people could use to better their lives.

I knew a lot about glutathione going into this book, but I was unaware of the differences in delivery mechanisms making quite so much of a difference, nor was I aware that specific types of testing (erythrocyte) were so much more accurate than serum. I'm going to do some of my own experiments in testing and delivery of NAC, topical liposomal, and topical water-soluble glutathione and see which really makes a difference... but I'm excited about the prospect!

I’ve never even heard of glutathione before reading this book. This was easy to read and understand. Quite interesting for a medical book and now understand the importance of glutathione and looking at ways to incorporate it. I like how he didn’t push his website to sell his products (actually had to dig a bit to find it…$$$) but looking at other alternatives and foods that have it. Must read if you are interested in this sort of thing.

He lost me when he started talking about climate change affecting glutathione levels.
Then he promoted the vegetarian/vegan diet not because of glutathione but because he thought it was best.
And lots of comments about his product that he sells.
It was a hard no for me.

audiobook review:
This read like a snake oil infomercial the whole time and didn't really give actual advise besides eating more vegetables.

Read as audiobook from Audible.

While there was some useful information gained from this book, it ultimately read as a long infomercial for the author's products.
