Rate this book
This illustrated storybook captures the unforgettable fashions, vocabulary, and characters of the iconic 1995 film Clueless with an adorable kid-friendly adaptation about making friends.

Cher and Dionne are the coolest kids at Bronson Alcott Elementary School in Beverly Hills. When a new -- very unique, grunge-chic, and possibly clueless -- girl named Tai comes along, Cher and Dionne take her under their wings. They tell her how to dress and what hobbies to take up to be a part of their friend group. But Tai really likes skateboarding, baggy clothes, and wants to hang out more with the group of skateboarders. Cher and Dionne try a variety of ways to change Tai, alongside a cast of characters including Murray, Amber, Travis, Summer, Elton, and Miss Geist. But in the end, they realize that people are different and that's what makes them so cool!

As if! I like totally found this today when shopping. Cher and the gang are in elementary school and the story was altered a tad to be age appropriate. Oh my, it’s just so cute.

So cute! We just got this book in today and I immediately picked it up!! It was so adorable. The illustrations by Heather Burns were spot on. And G.M. Berrow did an amazing job adapting the movie into the book. Love that it takes place in elementary school, it only makes it that much cuter. I didn’t give it 5 stars because we didn’t get Josh (Paul Rudd’s) character. Loved it though.

Hello, friends! Our book today is Clueless: A Totally Classic Picture Book, adapted by G. M. Berrow and illustrated by Heather Burns, a kidlit tribute to the popular teen movie of the same name.

Cher and Dionne are the most popular, fashionable girls at Bronson Alcott Elementary – they know all the right looks, all the cool people, and all the trendiest hobbies. So when new girl Tai comes to school and they notice how nervous, out of place, and “clueless” she feels, Cher and Dionne decide to help her out. They take Tai shopping to help her find a new look, then they and their friends show her all the hobbies that the cool kids do. And while Tai appreciates their efforts, she still feels out of place, preferring her old style and hobbies. Perhaps Cher and Dionne need a makeover of their own, and learn how to accept their friend for who she is…

There’s been a fun trend of picture book adaptations of adult media lately, with admittedly mixed results. Some work spectacularly, some not as much; this effort falls somewhere in middle. There’s a distinct oddity to the VERY teenage themes of the Clueless film being shoehorned into elementary-age characters, especially for adult readers who are familiar with the source material. However, Cher and Dionne’s obsession with fashion and popularity is not much different than other kidlit characters geared towards little girls, and the main themes of this adaptation are surprisingly sound. There’s a nice lesson in appreciating people for who they are and the things they love, regardless of how different or unfashionable they may be (Tai is far more comfortable with her flannels and skateboarding than the trendier activities, but is happy to spend time with her new friends once they realize and embrace this). The cartoon illustrations are colorful and fun, and feature plenty of nods and winks to older fans of the movie. The length is fine, though the pace is uneven; it took a while for JJ to invest in the story, but she enjoyed the ending. An uneven adaptation, but one that’s full of heart. Overall, we liked it – like, totally Baby Bookworm approved.

This is a very cute adaptation that younger readers will enjoy for its substance and illustrations and older readers will enjoy for its pop-culture origins. As a reader who doesn't have a strong emotional attachment to the original movie, I read this story with fresh eyes. The story felt a little disjointed which effects its overall pacing. I think it might leave some kids confused or disinterested. The illustrations were extremely adorable though and I think that older readers would enjoy seeing 80's movie picture book adaptations like this and be completely content with the stories as-is.

Squeal!!! I loved this so much! It was adorable! And all the characters as kids, so cool! Absolutely loved it! Read it for me, not any kids, but totally appropriate and sweet even if you don’t know Clueless!

A cute children's retelling of the classic 90s teen flick 'Clueless'.

'Clueless' is a quarter guilty pleasure, quarter escapism, quarter feelgood popcorn chick flick, and the other quarter one of my absolute favourite films from the 90s, which is hilarious, feminist and progressive for its time. And it was written and directed by a woman, so it's authentic and wholeheartedly genuine as well as a comedy magnum opus. Plus, I'm a girly girl at heart, who likes bright colours, and pretty clothes and accessories (not necessarily fashion, because I wear whatever I want and don't care for brands, trends and fads).

'Clueless: A Totally Classic Picture Book', which sets the characters in elementary school instead of high school (nice touch having Dionne's mum drive the girls to school rather than Dionne herself driving), is about friendship, and accepting people for who they are and what they like. It's the usual "Be yourself" message from any children's media, but it works well. The main focal characters are Cher, Dionne and Tai; and maybe Travis and Amber. Others such as Christian I think only appear on one page. Josh is MIA in the entire picture book, which is baffling because who wouldn't want to include Paul Rudd in anything? Oh well, I suppose his absence is tied to the downplaying of the romance in this book about elementary school students. The emphasis is on friendship.

It's a colourful, cartoony, fun little book, overall. A must for 'Clueless' fans.

It's great that a female-centric film from the 90s has risen beyond a cult status and has gained the attention and appreciation it deserves. Amy Heckerling's film is a "bubblegummy" comedy chick flick that is much deeper than its surface level suggests. It's the best kind of popcorn entertainment. And it's just a funny, sweet, tender movie.

Final Score: 3.5/5

First, I'd like to thank Hachette Book Group Canada for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Okay, if you're old enough like I am to have seen Clueless a million times, then you're gonna want to pick this cute children's book up anyway! With the amazing illustrations that capture the characters perfectly, I think you'd want to have this on your collection.

However, the story itself revolves around friend groups, liking different things from others, and realizing that it's okay to be different from friends!

Overall this was a cute and entertaining story! Like I said before, as an adult you'll love the connection to the movie, but children will be able to take away that it's okay if everyone is different. That's what makes them all unique and special.

This book was ADORABLE! It was everything I wanted it to be. Such a concise telling of the origial story, but adjusted for a younger audience. This story also has the message that you and your new friends can like different things and still be best friends. This was just the cutest story!

I love the movie, and now I love this book. The illustrations are absolutely adorable, and I love how you can still see each character's same personality, just adapted into an elementary aged version of themselves. But, the thing I really liked about this book is the fact that it's not just about the movie, it also teaches kids a lesson about allowing their friends and peers to do whatever they enjoy, and to not try to force them into doing activities that they don't particularly like.

Loved this. I grew up with the movie Clueless and this was such a fun way to introduce it to a younger set of readers. The artwork was so similar to the movie as well. I think this would be a treat to both parents and children alike at storytime. I enjoyed how they used a lot of the language from the movie and revamped it for a fresh, new audience.

A totally adorable picture book adaptation!

The story is set in an elementary school and follows the same plot of the movie. The book is missing a couple of iconic characters (Josh and the dad), but overall it hits all of the Clueless nostalgia. It is definitely a book for the fans, but readers of all ages will enjoy reading this too.

This is a must read for all fans of the classic movie Clueless. I love how they’ve adapted it for a younger audience. So many lines from the original and the illustrations are spot on and adorable. Reminds me a lot of the Office Picture Book I read last year.

I love this book. Growing up with this film it was nice to see it made into a story for children. The illustrations are amazing and bring so much character to the story. Highly would recommend to The Office fans that want their children to get a little early understanding on.

this was cute and obviously since it was for children, it was adapted well from the movie. However, it would have been nice if the lines from the movie stayed assigned to the right characters (i.e. Dionne says "She could be a farmer in those clothes" in this book adaptation, as to Amber who says it in the movie). Overall super cute though!

An elementary school reimagining of the movie clueless with the kids in elementary school and meeting a new friend where they learn you don't all have to like the same thing.
