I quite like this book. It's small and therefore not indepth, but it's useful as a little pocket guide if you were out shopping and spotted a crystal. There aren't loads, but it covers quite a few of the "common" stones you're likely to come across, though there were a few I hadn't heard of before as well.

There's a nice little section at the back about chakras and using crystals with them.

It's a nice little starter. Good for someone with little to no knowledge of crystals, but people with more knowledge might be annoyed with this book.

tl;dr Very little information is given in this book, but it is beginner friendly. Even though this is meant to be a small guide/pocket book, one sentence per stone, with most of them not having accompanying artworks to help you visualize it, makes this a 2 star for me.

Not tl;dr:

The book opens with a (very) brief introduction of crystals, including various shapes and cuts you may encounter. Then goes into the types of crystals, with tips on how to choose one, then lists common stones and their metaphysical uses.

To start, the art is absolutely gorgeous. It's an interesting choice to use art instead of photos, but given how well drawn the artworks are, I think they work well enough as a replacement for photos. But that said, there is a REAL lack of artworks in this book, really to its detriment. Not every crystal is paired with an artwork, so as someone unfamiliar with most of these crystals, I have no idea what they look like.

On top of that, the descriptions of each crystal are very short, only a sentence per crystal. So for a reference book, it doesn't go in depth at all, which is disappointing. There was definitely plenty of space to include more information, and even if they wanted a brief book, they could've easily added at least one or two more sentences per crystal.

I am secular, so I'm not approaching this as someone who believes these things, but I do get worried when I see health advice tied to these things, such as 'this stone wards off cancer' or 'heals blood disorders'. 😬 When glancing at other resources, I also noticed not every stone's description matches with what other places say it means, but I suppose that comes with the territory. It doesn't help that it's only one sentence each. I imagine things would line up more if the descriptions were longer.

After the descriptions is additional information, such as cleansing, setting intentions/using the stones, grids, and chakras. (I also noticed some repeated art in this section, which was disappointing. I feel like that space could've been replaced with more unique artworks for the crystals that had none.)

From my limited understanding of crystals, this seems to cover the basics, so for beginners like myself, it could be an okay choice, but given the lack of art/images and limited descriptions, I think it'd be better to invest elsewhere.

I feel bad giving this book such a low rating. Had there been more art at least, I would've felt more generous. As is, it's just not a useful enough resource.

This is a very pretty book, with lots of full color pictures. There's also a nice beginning section that gives a basic introduction to the main ideas of working with crystals. However, the crystal "dictionary" section has very, very little information. It's only got about a sentence or so about what each stone "does" or is commonly associated with.

Though, again, the pictures are very nice - large and in full color. And it's being marketed as an introduction, so it is what it says it is. If you're already into crystals or have any other books on working with them, you won't find anything useful here. But it's a pretty introduction, and the RP Minis series seems like it could be an attractive set of introductory books for display or for casually leafing through.

You finish it really fast and it’s perfect for a beginner. Love that it’s super small and portable, so you can literally take it anywhere with you and check on details.
Learned A LOT from this small book, will definitely get more.
