London, England. The Tower of London. Almost 1000 years ago to today. Sinclair McKay’s The Tower of London Puzzle Book is a very clever book! The author provides a condensed history of the Tower of London, and at the end of each chapter, puzzles are presented to the reader that are based on the information of the previous chapter. Easy? Absolutely not! Fascinating! Definitely. For example, chapter 5, The Shadow of the Axeman discusses some of the famous people who were executed in the Tower. Queen Anne Bolelyn (Henry VIII’s second wife) was executed on May 19, 1536. The puzzles at the end of this chapter relate to these people. One puzzle has the spaces for the names. One has to decide which name goes where. There are clues to guess the answers horizontally (not connected to main subject). If successful, the name appears vertically, and the person’s last words are seen below the puzzle, horizontally, as the letters have been taken from the shaded areas. Challenging but clever! 4.5 stars plus one learns history of The Tower of London.
