A War of Magic. A Legend of Three Elves. Darkness Threatening to Return.
Elves were supposed to be gone, defeated in the great war. Magic is practiced behind closed doors, and only by the elites.
All I was trying to do was survive, maybe with a bit more curiosity about my master's magic than I should've allowed. He caught me snooping, and sent me on a quest to steal a magic scroll. A quest that would change my life.
Soon I found myself caught up in a whirlwind journey that involved elves, monsters, and more than one hottie in my bed.
I was terrified. I was challenged. I was pleasured beyond belief.
I was loving every second of it, and now get to share that journey with you.
Harem elements, though more so in book 2 and 3. The spicy sort, with detail.
F bombs to have f bombs. 55 times the f bomb was used in 282 pages. This author also fell into the amateur's trap of using certain phrases repeatedly. 30 some times the MC or someone else gritted or ground their teeth. Add in too many things that make no sense or contradictory statements makes this a hard pass. Author needs to grow up to write a story worth reading.
2 examples of nonsense: The magical girl states djinn don't need to eat. Later in the story, she brings food for the MC, and she is just as hungry as him.
MC goes into a cave. States he is at the foot of the mountains but they are too far away to see the mountains.
There is no hero in this story. There is not even a protagonist. There is a viewpoint character, who acts as a pawn for every other character in the book. The MC literally lucks into finding a wish-granting genie, and rather than take any initiative towards improving his lot, he decides to first go home to his slave master to see how badly he will be punished, and then after discovering that his slave owner was not a good slave owner, he decides to become the pawn of the genie! That may not be entirely unreasonable considering that the genie is very beautiful, but he thinks that genies are mythical. It turns out the genie was created 50 years ago. That is a long time ago... for a hairstyle or a pair of pants. It's not so long that you forget entire wars or magical races. Perhaps the viewpoint character is ignorant, and he makes a point of saying he has been kept uneducated, but then the author neglects to have the supporting characters fill him in on current events. We have no idea what's going on or why, we can only make incomplete kisses, and that's not nearly enough to build investment or engagement. In this book: the MC stumbles around ignorantly and uselessly while other people actually do things. It's not even good as fap fiction, because there are virtually no erotic encounters, and what few exist are short, abrupt, and don't even change or build the relationships involved. 3/10, would not read again, do not reccomend.
more old school than I'd expected. 3& 1/2 stars Wile this book is short for an average novel it's written in the longer form of fantasy books from the 80's. Yes, the series is shaping up to be a harem later on, and there are sex scenes in the later half of this book, Yet the style has a bit more in common with Piers Anthony and Terry Brooks than with your average modern day harem writer. You could look at this cover and think "Same old stuff", and for the most part you'd be right. Or maybe I'm tripping and this just counts as slow burn. The world building is fair to good, the plot is fairly standard. A big bonus for me that that this is not a "transported form earth" story and the MC is neither a bro, nor a meat head. The hot chick is not a useless appendage. She has thoughts, plans, and power of her own- although the mandatory mystery attraction to the average guy MC is in full effect. I liked the pacing and the tone through out. The stakes were never overwhelming and (brace yourself) the MC has to make an effort to get good and it takes more than one long afternoon. Honestly if I'd read this book 20 harem novels ago I'd have given this 4 maybe even 5 stars. I'm keen to see where it's going.
Good book. A little bit on the short side, but since the 2 is already out it really isn't an issue. I particularly liked the brevity of the battles. Battles to the death tend to not last more than a few seconds in real life, and I really can't stand when authors drag it out and try to over-dramatize it with cliffhangers, last moment moves, cards on the sleeve or ex machina. It could do with a little more descriptions of the characters; I was half-way through when I noticed that the main girl had green hair, and I couldn't figure out what she was wearing until I looked at the cover.
Pleasantly surprised; I had passed on this repeatedly due to the lurid cover art, expecting a standard harem-type thing. Not perfect, but I'll give it 5 stars because it was entertaining, well-written from a technical standpoint (flow, grammar, editing); I enjoyed it and want to read more.
Somebody mentioned the cursing as excessive; it could be the years I've spent in the Army, but I didn't find this an issue. To calibrate that, (and date myself if you share the reference) excessive to me is "Raw" era Eddie Murphy. Good pulpy light fantasy; not classic literature but I found it engaging.
Yeah... not good. If you prattle on about how ‘Magic is mistrusted’ but the MC is a apprentice (of sorts) enrolled in a magic school and all the aristocracy are magicians, it’s a bit hard to keep the immersion. Well, if that was it, perhaps I could push through. But throughout the author keeps mashing the keyboard and hoping for the best. This one wasn’t for me.
3.5 stars, I liked it, not a 4 star but not bad. I enjoy the story and characters. I will continue with the series. The book will not be for everyone with the adult content but I have no issues with that.
TLDR: If you are looking for something smutty, walk away. If not, and you can handle bad writing to get into a pretty decent world, then go ahead!
Full review:
I read this as a joke. I did not come into this with high expectations. So, yeah, it was better than I thought it would be.
Did I like the world? Yes! Did I like the main couple? Sometimes… Was the narration atrocious? Also yes. Was my favorite part of the book when dragons were mentioned? Yes, yes it was. Was I disappointed when dragons never actually appeared in this book? Severely. Was it painful to read this book? Yes. Did I enjoy this book? Undecided.
But, those aren’t the reasons Djinn Unleashed is getting only one star.
Let’s talk about the sex scenes.
I honestly expected more, in both quantity and, okay, not so much quality. To sum up, I was expecting absolute trash sex scenes littered all throughout the book.
What gave me that crazy idea? Besides for the cover, you mean? Well, it literally says on the description that this book is “the spicy sort, with detail.”
Friends, there are only three sex scenes in this book—one at around 56%, one at 94%, and one at the very end. Sure, they were “spicy and had “detail”. But, if you’re looking for smut, don’t read this. It’s a cheat. Read it for the world if anything.
There’s very little in the literary world I hate more than false advertisement. And I’m not saying it was false. I’m just saying it was exaggerated. It’s a cheat code to attract a type of audience, even though it’s just like every other romantasy out there. Definitely not smut fiction.
On the one hand, I really liked the story, but on the other hand, it was way more sexually explicit than it needed to be! The suspense and mystery about the main character and his supposed [later realized] powers was intriguing and engulfing! Questions opened and presented offered a truly great foundation for an all-encompassing fantasy, and they were addressed and answered very nicely, which leads well into the following book in the series. The sex scenes were definitely too explicit, felt forced, and were unnecessary – although conceivably future books in the series will play off them. Perhaps it's just that I personally got nothing but annoyance from them, and when I share the book with my (almost 22-year-old) son, he is likely to feel that way too – although maybe it's just that I'm his mother that makes him uncomfortable with the whole idea when he's around me. Anyway, I like the Djinn overall, and I'm enjoying seeing Grant come into his real self! And I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
The plot was originally a tight-small heist but as it quickly unfolded there were multiple levels of power/authorities in the world-building. The magic system is interesting and hints at explanation in future books which was intriguing.
For most of the book, there was only one explicit scene which was enough for me. Then the last portion of the novel there was a lot of adult content. I'm thinking holy F... this is erotica.
For me, adult fiction should have characters that act like adults, and when the events lead in a certain direction that event should take place. But I don't need or want it to be what the story is about. It pulls me out of the story. Shouldn't these characters be saving the world, running for their lives, or figuring out that important clue not detailing every action in a spring break fling?
But if it's your thing and you want a story around it this series probably has you covered.
In a world where Elves had disappeared, magic was taught in a Mage’s Manor. Grantsome “Grant” was a student who had shown no aptitude in the decade he had been there. Sent on a quest to retrieve a magical scroll by his Master Mage, Viz. Succeeding by the skin of his teeth, Grant also acquired a magical ring in the Emperor’s Palace dungeon where the scroll was kept. The ring held Aleanna, an Elven Djinn held captive for five decades. Aleanna was one of The Sisters Three who were captured by a Master Mage. Aleanna seemed to be a combination of a Djinn, a Demon, and a Succubus. Aleanna wanted to find her sisters. Grant wanted revenge against his Master Viz. Chapter 11 gets considerably warmer from then on. If you’re not into the harem works type fantasy then go no further. Three.point.five for an interesting start.
I enjoy reading LutHeran as much as the next guy, but this really never went anywhere in that fashion. Sure there is one guy that takes a long time to have a story to anywhere, but he finds an artifact that gets him a skinny elf, yay. Big deal. He has powers he doesn't understood to use, nor do we get to see him figure them out until the very end where he uses it "after weeks of practicing!" We never see him getting them to work, but now he has them! ?! The end was enjoyable and I'm willing to attempt the next in the series, but I have a lot better books I'm waiting to read while working through this book. I normally read a book every 2 days, this book took a week. Just not exciting enough to want to read.
Pure escapism, love this sort of books there slightly less linear and the trope is overdone but the op'd protag and his unlikely harem are moving towards their goal, even if they dont know what that is... the book is written well enough, its not a mind numbing slug through way too many details (sometimes there really arent enough of them) and thats for the best, lets the reader use their own imagination to build the world the story is set in, just so long as you realise its magic and not explainable by mortla means your golden lol
and yeah its a bit like a linar game progression, but then at least its always moving forwards, theres nothign worse than stagnation afterall.
I can't say enough about pacing and momentum in a story. Some authors like this one get it, some do not. When they do get it their books are the ones you can't put down. Not only does this one have pacing, bit the story and world are also very well laid out, without bogging down the reader with trivia, just what we need to advance the story.
The characters could use a little more individualized desires and motivations, but they are very good for the first book.
An enjoyable read with the MC a typical orphan who has hidden powers that the bad guys want to use if anyone can figure out how to teach him to tap into that power. A robbery gone wrong launches the young man into a whirlwind adventure with an attractive companion looking for her sisters, but finding a conspiracy which could damn the empire. A good fun read with a bit of sex to spice it up.
Great characters and a story to match that fair clips along. Plenty of action, magic and adult bits which are well done.
The MC is likeable and not OP so it’s nice to see he has to train to learn his skills and get fitter. The story itself is interesting with plenty of background dropped in as the book progresses.
All in all a very good read and look forward to the next one, enjoy 😁
The writing style was good. The plot was promising. But it progressed in a linear fashion which precluded depth. As a result, it failed to get the sense of the fantasy world across or the dilemma facing the protagonist who was incredibly dense. As light reading - read, enjoy, and forget - it would do.
This is definitely written from the male perspective and targeting college aged readers but it is still a fun ride. Mark seems to like an H with a penchant for multiple h's as the next books show so if you know that going in, complaining is a bit futile. You will go on a wild ride throughout this story and they do not end with cliffhangers.
Grantham, or Grant as he prefers, is the MC. Quickly in the story, Grant is trying to avoid capture but failing when he discovers a ring containing a beautiful djinni (genie), Aliana, and his life changes. Engaging. Already have book 2.
This is the start of a new era of saga about lives loves and magical lore in a land of opportunity for the next group of people and magical beings to help each other find themselves.
I read this on the off chance that I would enjoy it. It was a recommended read based on what I had read before. I was not let down. This was a great story. Can't wait to read the next one.
3.5/5 I wanted something light after finishing up larger books, and this was nice. I enjoyed nice intro/ramp up and was pleasantly surprising at pacing and the characters. Will jump into the second book.
The story is weak, the characters are boring and flat. The action is ridiculous. The whole thing is just bad on so many levels I can not even describe them. This is a complete waste of time.
Hard to get through, at least it was short. There seems to be cussing, just to cuss. I don’t believe I’ve read so much bad language in any other book, ever. And sex to replenish power? That’s new. I think it’s just a way to add a lot of sex scenes.
2.5 stars. Better than a 2 so it gets a 3. Basically, this is erotica or porn, depending on your perspective. However, I did find the plot interesting enough to see what happened. I will not continue the series.
10 If it wasn’t for the smiling scenes then this would definitely be a YA and the terrible technique of a so called cliff hanger is more annoying than enticing. The whole book was very teenage boyish. Can only recommend to a select few among the normal crew.
