Through the Storms

Rate this book
Eric Gaudion has fought a long battle with chronic illness: 22 years, over 100 admissions to hospital, more than 30 operations, several near-death encounters, the trauma of transplant surgery and the constant expectation of death. Eric writes of his struggle to come to terms with his faith and his condition. Facing Post Traumatic Syndrome and huge questions about healing raised by his Pentecostal/Charismatic faith his illness led to much soul searching and the need to dig deep into his faith in order to survive. This is the story of the enormous challenges he and his wife Diane faced as they set out to follow Christ and serve him at home and overseas. Eric offers insight into post-trauma recovery, medium to long term strategies for overcoming the down-drag caused to faith and psychological well-being by chronic pain and apparently unanswered prayer, and gives hope to those facing long-lasting struggles of all kinds that seem resistant to prayer.

Storms in life are an inevitability – here is a manual. What a wonderful gift.

The first fifth gives an outline of the author’s twenty-two years of harrowing illness and pain and it’s certainly not as dismal as you might expect! Eric Gaudion writes with a twinkle in his eye and gentle, self-deprecating humour throughout that is in itself a miracle, given all the he has been through. His story demonstrates that God is with us all the time and that the promises of Scripture are not just for a distant eternal future but for now. Don’t miss out this part of the book. It sets the scene, and there’s reassurance, encouragement and helpful insight for families of those who are seriously ill as well as for the sufferer.

The remaining four fifths of the book are the manual itself, covering a long list of issues that will all too familiar to those battling with long term conditions of any kind – waiting, silence, medication, loneliness, self-worth, uselessness, disappointment, post traumatic stress, rejection, failure, mental health, faith and suffering. For each, he reflects helpfully, using his own experience in order to provide wise and very practical advice. This part of the book can be dipped in to, as well as read straight through.

Eric Gaudion is a preacher and a pastor ‘to trade’ and has a clear concern to share all the lessons he has garnered on his journey so that others will benefit. His book truly is a gold mine. He has proved that God is good all the time, and his book spills over with that good news. What he has produced is an immensely helpful resource for anyone facing any long-term battle – whether physical, mental or social – and also for carers and health professionals. To mix metaphors - if you’re looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, you might well find it here, and discover that there can be light in the middle of the tunnel too.

Through the storm was written by Eric and his living wife Diane. Eric’s storm has lasted over 20 years, a chronic illness of excruciating pain and heartache. Over this time when they thought he would never get through this illness his wife Dianne took care of him. There were many times when their every day needs were great, and had to trust the Lord for all they needed, and the Lord provided in a wonderful way. Eric wrote this book for anyone who is going though their own personal storm whatever that might be, and for those who care of them. If that is you , may be a Christian or non Christian, I thoroughly recommend this book to you as you ride out the storm.

Eric Gaudion spent more than twenty years battling the most excruciating pain suffering from pancreatitis. He went through near-death experiences, countless surgeries and yet was an Ealim Pentecostal pastor with a healing ministry. His faith has been hugely challenged with many doubts as he also suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and yet God was the place he went to and found all the strength he needed to persevere through the terrible storms that assailed him. His courage and faith are an inspiration to all of us who feel we are in hopeless situations.
