Some secrets are meant to be broken— the rewards outweighing the consequences. Some, however, bring about a change unlike any ever imagined.
The Mating Games challenged me; not only physically, but mentally, and the emotional toll it wreaked was the hardest part. Yet, I was starting to realize that the worst… and best… was yet to come. Joining the Resistance opened up possibilities for me I'd never considered, but just like anything else worth having, the price was steep. The question I struggled with, was that cost worth it? I thought seeing Izzy safe would be enough to make me answer yes, but with my emotions strung as tight as a coil between the men who had found their way into my life, I had to face the fact that the dreams I always had were no longer part of the future I envisioned.
There was one thing for certain though, no matter what path I chose, somebody was going to wind up hurt. And by the Stones, all signs were pointing to that somebody being me.
USA Today bestselling author Helen Scott spends her time alternating between fantasy and reality. She likes to think she’d be sorted into Hufflepuff and would have been a Physical Kid from Brakebills. Her days are fueled by tea and cuddles from her four-legged kids and amazing husband in their home in the Chicago suburbs.
When not reading or writing, Helen can be found baking, enjoying a walk in the woods, crafting, or playing video games. She’s a lover of sushi and K-Dramas and is convinced there is magic in the world if you know where to look.
Whether paranormal or contemporary, Helen loves writing sassy, kick-butt heroines and drool-worthy love interests. She's the author of the House of Wolves and Magic series, the Cerberus series, and the Of Demons and Dragons series.
I just kinda wanna shake all the characters until their brains fall out and they grow new ones. Predictable and nothing important gets said because interruptions.
Pages: 180 My rating: 3.5 Read other books by this author in the future: yes
The second book of the Series The Hollow did not get me as much as the first one did. Of course the Mulan thing is gone now, after it was revealed she is a girl. But I wished we got to know more about her magic and the story would have moved a little further than it did. But there was some smut and relationship stuff, as Cal forms her Harem. Still the book was entertaining, but I had to take a break several times not like the first one, which I could not put down.
Disappointed. Riddled with editing errors, simple plot inconsistencies (for example, the 2nd and 3rd stone shipments were supposed to be an hour apart at one point in the book and then were a day apart in another), and poor plot building. It felt like the story jumped around and things happened without explanation. The men are jealous and competitive at the beginning of the night and then are suddenly fine with one another. Um, why? What happened? Also, very stupid characters that don't pick up on stuff or bother to wonder about odd occurrences - like pulverizing an entire headboard into ash out of nowhere. Very heavy handed foreshadowing and coincidences that are just a bit too convenient, too.
Another reviewer said they just wanted to shake everyone, and that’s the most accurate take on this book. So many plot conflicts relied on people not finishing their sentences. The lack of communication just makes things juvenile. At the same time they also have a lot of unrealistic info dumping conversations. The ending was extremely predictable to the point that I was disappointed that the author went with that plot direction. I hate when a heroine is shown as TSTL, and the authors took our brave (albeit naive) heroine from book 1 and gave her her femininity back in this book only to add in extreme stupidity as well. She’s warned about the last mission and stupidly ignores the warning thinking she’s ‘untouchable’.
We also really haven’t gotten anywhere near enough answers or descriptions of the political situation, there just isn’t enough world building. I think the author had a cool idea for a dystopian fantasy book, but just doesn’t have the bandwidth for the word count needed to really bring this elaborate of a story to life. Based on the page count and the fact that this is just a trilogy, the author needed to cut back on some of the layered situations because at this point it’s all crammed together. At one point I remember thinking the author kept throwing in little ‘rules’ that didn’t exist previously to try and explain why something logical couldn’t work (instead of establishing the magic rules up front).
Also WHY did this girl make such a big deal about shaving after she woke up from a coma? She has been living as a man for her ENTIRE life, growing body hair would have boosted her disguise, so logically she would have never shaved before, so WHY would her first thoughts and first actions on waking up be about shaving her legs and pits?? It’s something she would have never worried about before but now that she’s exposed as a woman she needs to suddenly take care of that? And she’s able to shave her legs and pits with a sword? On what has to be one of maybe a handful times in her life that she’s shaved? I don’t buy it.
I kinda want to know what happens, but seeing book 3 is only 178 pages doesn’t give me high hopes considering how many loose ends would need to be resolved in that span. Like I would argue at this stage there is 3 books more worth of story to be told.
Seduction is a great followup to Survival. Which I really enjoyed book one, book two brings more to the table. We have some action, a lot actually. Which I enjoy a good action packed story. Keeps me on my toes. Plus this book has some good sexy hot times.
Cal is really growing into herself and who she is. Which again, I enjoy watching characters grow and realize just who they can become. She is strong, caring, sweet, funny and feisty. Which of course makes the best female leads.
I love alpha protective males. This has them!!! Fox and Ash are fierce and I love it!!! We learn more about Marcus and get introduced to Hawk.
I enjoyed the multiple POV, and yes the steam factor is next level here. There is still a search for the traitor among them. Still a-lot about Cal that we do not know about. So overall, a great second addition that will leave you needing book three.
I liked the first book in this series but this one was even better. It had a bit of mystery and some more action. Plus some hot scenes. It was a fun watching Cal realize she could now be a woman and she could chose what kind she wanted to be. It did have a few scenes that made me laugh and pointed to what was to come. Although a few points of views from the guys were there to move the story along it was really all bout Cal spreading her wings and her choices. Now I cannot wait to see what comes next especially due to the ending and the few reveals that left me wanting more. Just a fun quick steamy story that entertained me yet was not nasty.
Still needs some editing though as there are several typos.
But this is good, we see Cal forming her harem and finally being able to live as a woman. I really do enjoy this little series even if some of the plot is glaringly obvious.
I really like Fox, I think he’s a great strong character and Ash is cool too a little insta love there though. Hopefully this will be explained. I also do like Marcus and hope things in the next book turn out ok for him. Calypso is totally going to think he set her up I hope that doesn’t last that long.
This is a fantastic continuation full of mystery, action and some hot and steamy scenes. Calypso continues to grow and develop and as does her relationships and interactions with the other characters! Great storyline that I am excited to see where this takes us next!
It actually didnt start out that bad. I mean, there were some definite writing issues, a lot more than in the first book. Misspellings, missing words, word mix-ups (manner instead of manor) but also simply the writing style. Calypso keeps having these inner dialogues with herself explaining her own actions, motivations, intentions etc.. very annoying. If that was meant to make me understand/like her better, it sorta backfired. I quite liked watching Cal morph into Calypso in the beginning. Had fun with Ash and Fox, Izzy and Bear. And then it started going downhill fast. Didn't like how she acted all entitled and full of attitude towards Marcus, also couldn't see any purpose to adding Hawk other than number filler.... But where I ultimately lost interest was when she decided to become this rebel fighter which could've been cool. Sadly, the transition was not convincing. Cal seemed to become stupider by the minute. You know, all TSTD.. and the story itself become very predictable. Sorry, not gonna waste my time on that...
This is book two of The Hollow series, which is a reverse harem romance tale. The main character is Cal or should I actually say, Calypso. In book one we got to know her as a woman hiding as a man and having to work in the mines, mining for magical stones for the Divines. She took part in the Mating Games to keep her housemate and only true friend, Izzy, safe from any other male predator. She has been rescued by the resistance and gets to know more about Ash and Fox, one a fellow miner and both secretly part of the resistance along with their leader Bear. They don’t trust her very much, especially when she connected with a Divine during the Mating Games. She has somehow ‘bonded’ with this man, called Marcus, and is getting messages from him during her sleep.
To enable the resistance members to trust her, she has asked Marcus to prove he is on her side and won’t betray them. This proof is given to her over a number of nights and will hit the Divines in their main pocket, the delivery of their much needed magical stones from the mines to their cities. Calypso wants to ensure that Izzy is now safe and can find her own true love and happiness for the future. Bear seems to be taking to her, but as the leader, one minute he is burning hot, then almost icy cold, the next. Calypso needs to have a word and doesn’t care that he is the local resistance leader or not, Izzy is far too important to her, to be messed about with.
Calypso’s own relationship gets her closer to Ash and also Fox, with a somewhat unusual first encounter between the sheets. Both are into her, but so is Marcus, as you find out later. Her secret info on the stones deliveries is passed onto Bear and this brings a higher up from the resistance to the secret location. His name is Hawk and he is used to mixing it up with the Divines and high up Hollows and dresses the part. He also has an arrogant manner. He is eying up Calypso and has set his eye on bedding her, but only has a record of one night conquests! Not the sort you want a live long relationship and not someone you should really trust.
The higher ups have decided that Bear’s resistance group should attack all three delivery routes, never mind the human cost that it may bring. Calypso is kept in a separate location, ready to use her magic if needed. Both of her new mates are experiencing some strange events after being with her, but haven’t discussed it with her as yet, not knowing if she is the common denominator. Izzy thankfully is not brought along as a fighter, so Calypso knows she will be safe at least. Ash and Fox both keep their eyes on Calypso as the first delivery is hijacked, but they all come away fairly unhurt. They are not so lucky on the second hijacking event. It seems the news of a mole within their resistance group has been true and they have fallen prey to the mole’s actions.
Someone is going to be hurt and Calypso is beginning to believe it might be her! Her magic is now a well-known fact within the resistance and although many other Hollow’s are quite at the step of trusting her fully, the fact Ash, Fox and Bear do, is all she requires to continue in this new world and in her new identity as Calypso rather than as Cal. She may not be completely comfortable in her new role and the clothing that is sometimes pushed on her, but she is getting used to it. She still needs to learn more about her magic and requires Marcus’s help to train her, if he will. Their last communication is cut short and Calypso doesn’t get the warning e is trying to pass to her. The fate of them all is up to chance and their own determination to survive. Events will not go as they wish and they will be left to pick up the pieces.
There is certainly some multiple reverse harem romance going on in this episode of the series and there are even a couple more to add to her sign-up sheet! Whether she will fall for any others is up to the next book to divulge to readers, I guess. There are hints at what is to come and Marcus no doubt has a tricky job to do. I look forward to what Ash and Fox do next and how they will get back together with Calypso. How many of the resistance have been killed in their latest foray is unknown, so matters will be intense for those who have survived. Another interesting read for this series and can’t wait for the next to see what happens! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the books above.
Book 1 was perfect, book 1 was amazing, book 1 was magical&then so quickly that it gave me whiplash, you lost me with book 2.
Everything was going so well, I was vibing with this book, I was into this book&THEN
AND THEN the most stupid horrible dreadful thing that could happen, happened.
I'm talking about the scene.
The scene where she has sex with 1 guy for the first time while another guy is supposed to be asleep (meanwhile he wakes up&starts jerking off because hello we're suddenly in a porno now) was the worst thing this book series could've ever done to me.
You might as well have punched me in the face&ripped out my heart because what in the ever loving **** was that BS?
You can't have them share a sweet heated kiss in book 1&expect me to believe that the MC would be down to clown in book 2 with someone else ASLEEP IN THE ROOM. Maybe if this wasn't the first time they had sex I could force myself to buy it but IT WAS LITERALLY THE FIRST TIME THEY HAD SEX
It was so rushed&OOC&came completely out of nowhere that it tore my emotional investment in the series out of me so abruptly that I'm scarred for life.
Made me so pissed that I only skimmed the rest of the book&skimmed book 3.
Funnily enough, I would probably check out another book series by this author cuz book 1 was that perfect to me (such a perfect book ommfg) but as for this particular series... Well, I'm scrubbing it from my mind&pretending it never existed.
ONE ACTION PACKED THRILL RIDE!!! Set 'em up! This talented and gifted dynamic duo brought out the big guns, seizing the reigns and calling the shots, throwing this little fella into the eye of the storm, blasting it into a tailspin with a life altering, mind-blowing culmination. A tightly coiling vortex of inexplicable circumstances and a slew of inadvertent surprises, add a little spice to the mix, keeping it real. One action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, heart pounding, block busting bombshell, melding this jewel together seamlessly. Add drama, turmoil, tension, intrigue and mounting suspense along with a boatload of danger while dodging dark intentions, makes for one block busting adventure. The dynamics and presentation in layer upon layer, you peel back with each page your drawn into this web so deeply until you feel everything the characters feel one page at a time. The personalities are well matched and balanced with enough flaws for diversity. The characters and scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and colorful descriptions so rich and lively, they blend and flow smoothly. Remarkable job guys, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.
Great second book. Things continue along for our gang. Calypso no longer has to pretend to be a boy and relishes the freedom of that. She has to make amends for her deceit though. Her relationship with Fox and Ash progresses and we see another potential harem member in Marcus and Hawk. Calypso is eager to show she can help and asks for help from Marcus. Things go well at first but the traitor is still within their midst. I had a suspicion on who and was right! Changes are happening to Fox and Ash, and Marcus and Hawk find themselves in an unlikely partnership. I love the multiple POVs and the relationship definitely ramp up with some steam. There is more going on with Calypso that we don't understand yet. Excited to learn more and see how the family develops. Great continuation and excited for more of the story. Calypso is only getting stronger and as she gets to know more about herself I believe she will be on bad@ss babe.
Smut alert! Two scenes full of smut! OK, some of the reviews nearly had me not open this book. They said she's annoying and her bit about needing to shave as not making sense. To me that's wrong, they failed to remember she's bound herself to play a man to stay safe, she never had a chance to be feminine and she's wanted to be that. That is her, so she gets to be herself and feels free, why not shave. Some said simple communication would of sorted a lot of the issues...hmmm hello! This is a world where she's lost her mum at 10! The world she lives in she hides because she knows she will be used. Of course she does not trust easily. In the world she lives in, instincts help you survive, communication with the wrong person brings death your way. So I enjoyed this book, the Heroine is sassy, strong and finally having fun. 4.2 stars
Where do I begin!!! This was a very enjoyable and entertaining read and even though I liked it just didn't grab me as much as the first book did. I have so many unanswered questions and only got very little answers towards those. It was also kinda strange to see Fox and Ash who were so jealous and competitive at the beginning to them falling into ménage so easily but we also see another potential harem member in Marcus and Hawk. So I'm kinda interested to see how that going to play out. Overall a good continuation looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. I received a free copy via booksprout I voluntarily read and review this ARC no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
Wow! This is one action packed, sexy, hot story. Calypso is growing into herself greatly. She is feisty, strong, sweet and caring all wrapped into one. Fox and Ash are amazingly protective with strength and a fierceness that is all them. We see a bit more about Marcus and have a new character in the mix. Bear and Izzy add so much to the story. It is extremely well written and as mentioned the characters are beautifully developed. I love this series so far and can't wait for the next one. This is a definite must read!!!!!

Second book syndrome is real folks, this book is an example of it. It just didn't grab me as much as the first. Added to the fact that there are even more questions that need answering this time than the last...and very little given towards answering those. Cal and her pals are fun, and we're getting some hints at who they are and how they tick. It just didn't leave me clambering for the next read.
Would I read the next book? Heck yes I want to know more about the magic system and the things set in motion. Will it jump to the top of my tbr? I'm not so sure.

This book continues seamlessly from the previous book. It is very well written and the story and characters are well developed. I love the character personalities and enjoyed seeing their relationship dynamics evolve through the books. I like the continuity of the characters as well as the introduction of a few new ones. The story was action packed and full of twists and turns. It had suspense, emotion, intrigue, hot chemistry and romance. I’ve loved this series so far and look forward to the next book!! I’d highly recommend this book!!
NB: This book has a cliffhanger type ending.

3 stars. The story continues but becomes a lot less interesting to be honest. The smut levels have been driven up to 100%, which shouldn’t surprise me because that was the exact reason I picked up this series. However since smut was pretty much non existent in book 1 and it seemed we were focussing more on the story the sheer amount of it was an unwelcome addition in my opinion. The story is starting to loose a bit of its focus and becomes more disjointed. Based in boon 1 I was hoping more for an epic adventure but it seems like we are not going to get that. The world building and plot depth are becoming shallower and shallower and I’m losing interest fast.
I really liked this book, though it didn’t rank quite as high with me as book 1 did (which was phenomenal, btw). This one picks up shortly after the closing events in the previous installment, thrusting is directly into the minds of those around Cal and the messed up situation she finds herself in. It’s funny, a bit more action oriented and heavy on the relationship building, though there did seem to be a few scenes that were either missed or glossed over. Things are afoot - and we end on a cliffhanger. Minor editing issues including typos.
Book Two in this series certainly didn't disappoint. Following on after the Mating Games, we get to see the real 'Cal' as the story progresses. The intro of Marcus after the Games makes this a little more intriguing and the scene setting, character development and overall plot line are all really good. Can't wait for Book Three to see where this all goes. This is a little steamier than Book One, a little more dark and twisty, and a few more plot twists. Really recommend this read, won't disappoint. Solid 5 stars.
4 & 1/2 stars rounded up. Wow, this series is unique & definitely unpredictable. I liked Calypso (Cal) right away in book 1, like another reviewer said, the Mulan type storyline in book 1 hooked me right away. I wasn't sure what to think about her RH she's building, but with Ash & Fox all in, and Marcus in her dreamscapes, and maybe Hawk now too!? Not sure I'm onboard with Hawk. The twists & turns this book took, were totally unexpected for me. This book held my attention all the way thru, but there are a few hiccups in the plot and some things that didn't make sense. But man, do I need book 3, like right now!
Cal joins the resistance so she can be close to her friend, having her crush Ash and Fox there is an added bonus. We experience some long-awaited sexy time with a dash of voyeurism. She continues to have dreams with Marcus and we finally meet the mysterious Hawk. As expected they are all equally smitten with her. Then they got betrayed and she is taken. My review might be dull but the story does pull you in.
This book was entirely predictable and felt simple. I was bored for most of it because it was pretty obvious what was going to happen, and therefore, I didn't care about getting all that invested.
All of the characters are shallow, and there was no real effort put into giving them any kind of personality, and the only character development came in the form of super special power. Insert eye roll.
I was immediately drawn back into the story and did not want to leave. I cannot wait for the next book to find out what is going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat with the action and holding my stomach laughing at some of the antics that happened.

This is a continuation of book 1. I would say that it's best to read book 1 first before reading this. Book 1 really sets up the book and backstory well. I did enjoy this fantasy read-there's plenty of interesting things about the world and bits of romance here and there. I did enjoy seeing some of the relationships develop between Cal and the other people in the book.Ends in a cliffhanger.
This is a good continuation of the series. This is definitely a read that will leave you will have more questions than answers, but that only makes you want to continue reading the series. This has a good plot and great action and suspense. I cannot wait for the next book.
I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased, honest review.
Seduction by Helen Scott is such an awesome story that I hve had the privilege to read. Thi sis book number two out of three in this awesome series and I can not wait toread the next book. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about fantasy and paranormal romances.
