On the Rise is the third standalone story in the suspenseful Selena Bailey series. If you like thrilling twists, dark tension, and smart and driven women, then you'll love H.K. Christie's dark mystery series.
H. K. Christie watched horror films far too early in life. Inspired by the likes of Stephen King, Jodi Picoult, true crime podcasts, and a vivid imagination she now writes suspenseful thrillers. When not working on her latest novel, she can be found eating & drinking with friends, walking around the lakes, or playing with her favorite furry pal. She is a native and current resident of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The MARTINA MONROE series featuring Private Investigator Martina Monroe and her unofficial partner, Detective August Hirsch of the Cold Case Squad, is a nail-bing crime thriller series full of suspense. If you like high-stakes games, jaw-dropping twists, and embattled seekers struggling to do right, then you’ll love the thrilling Martina Monroe series.
The SELENA BAILEY series is a collection of suspenseful stories detailing one young woman's turbulent path to becoming a top-notch, kick-ass private investigator. If you like thrilling twists, dark tension, and smart and driven women, then you’ll love this new dark thriller series. A Permanent Mark is a suspenseful murder mystery featuring a grown-up Selena Bailey.
Wow! This was a fantastic mystery thriller woven beautifully between fiction and true reality. Raw and emotional with a surprise ending. H.K. Christie is not afraid to tackle tough subjects and her books in this series always end with a caring strong message.
What a story full of intrigue and suspense. Selena starts work at her step mother’s Investigator firm. She takes her first case, but it seems much darker than it appears. Couldn’t put it down.
Selena Bailey is now a sophomore and studying criminal justice, while working at her stepmother’s firm and was just handed her first PI case. When a little girl goes missing at a local nail salon, Selena is assigned to uncover the truth and find her. Selena’s investigation quickly uncovers much more than anyone bargained becoming increasingly dangerous by the hour.
On the Rise is the third installment of the Selena Bailey series, each can be read as a standalone however, I think it’s better to read the series in order as there is a lot of backstory. How the author can write such incredibly action-packed stories in 130 pages amazes me. I was hooked from the first page and continued to be as the story had several twists and turns and was action packed. Selena is a great MC however, her impulsiveness is really starting to annoy me.
So, I really, really wanted to like the Selena Bailey series because I'm loving the Martina Monroe one and I believe that H.K. Christie is a fantastic author. However, now that I've gone through the first three books in this series, I think I'm going to stop. I am having a very hard time liking Selena's character. I can sympathize with the rough things she's handled in her life but her attitude towards what she thinks she deserves was what put me over the edge on this book/series. In this book she continually didn't listen to directives, thinking she knew better (at the age of 19). She complained about having to start at the bottom in the firm (looking through records and other "boring" work) and she complained about how she had to take orders and she thought she should just start her own firm. Yes, I understand she is young and being immature comes with that, but it's not like she said and did these things once, she did them throughout all three books so far and has done them a lot in this current book. I have clearly become too fixated on her immature and entitled attitude.
I almost rated this book a two with those concerns, but when I take that part out of the equation, the story was good with a lot of good things in it. I also like how H.K. Christie has an author's note at the end of each of the books where she talks about the very true things that happen in our society and how they impact the real world. I like the story and the direction of the series, I just despise the main character.

This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.

This is another great story was Selena leading the way in her first "real" case as a private investigator. She has been through alot in the previous books, making her a great character. You really want her to succeed considering what she has been through. The back story is mentioned in this book so you can read it as a stand-alone. Selena works her way through the investigation but not always in the right way but.... in her own way. Great story. I recommend this book - and go back and read the others!
An excellent addition to a great series. The storyline is tightly plotted and the characters well developed.
Selena is ready to take on her first investigation, sure she can handle it, her schoolwork and her budding relationship. She has the skill and the smarts but if she can’t follow her stepmothers protocol she can end up in a dangerous situation.

On The Rise is the third standalone story in the Selena Bailey series. I loved this book and I cannot wait for the next one.
There is great character growth for Selena as she takes on the case of a kidnapped child. This soon leads to danger for Selena, suspense, intrigue, and drama. Will Selena be able to save the child before they are both killed?

I love the bad*** women in this series Go Girls! I think everyone should know how human trafficking is Every Where! I am aware of human trafficking but was shocked to learn how common it is and that it is all genders and ages. The more we know to get the word out there the more aware people are could hopefully help this horrific trade be banished dismantled and bring these poor souls home... If you have the means to help it's a worthy cause
On The Rise continues with Selena Bailey working at her stepmother, Martina's, Detective Agency. Selena's first case to be lead detective takes a sinister turn that even Martina didn't realize at first. Twist and turns until the end! I received an ARC from the author and this is my unsolicited review.
Selena Bailey is working at her stepmother's detective agency. Her first case as lead detective could lead her to a dangerous situation if she's not careful. Plenty of twists and turns, suspense, danger and intrigue keep you glued to the pages.

Ahh, just alright. The main character has some serious flaws that seem to hamper her than help her. There is something to be said about patience, waiting, taking it slow and listen to your elders. They possess the traits that are needed to do the job right. This was good but far from the sophistication of Martina.
Mix in the same story a curious and impetuous girl who want to become a PI, a case of a missing girl and a human trafficking ring and you have a thriller! An easy to read story with an unexpected ending. Entertaining!
This is Selena’s first lead on a case…a missing 6yo girl. Her investigation unravels a human trafficking ring. The girl is found safe but someone close to Selena is targeted. Great story.
Another exciting book. This book was very exciting. It really keeps you hanging interested and coming back for more. Can't wait to start the next book in this series. Hope all enjoy this story. It is a must read. 😉
In the aftermath of the operation Selena ran on campus that got a fraternity shut down, one offender jailed and better guidelines for sexual assault on campus, Selena is more than a bit overconfident.
Having a degree in theories about law enforcement and related techniques seems less useful than actually doing the job.
Except ....
Selena does not follow protocols, despite having a good set of instincts and insights into a situation. She has yet to learn that part of teamwork is protecting your team.
This case might have a happier ending for the client than some, but failure to keep her whole life and family teams informed and protected will come at a high price
I’m intrigued to see what happens next, now that Selena has faced a truly steep learning curve
