Tents, Trails, and Turmoil by Tonya Kappes
Campers and Criminals book 11. Cozy mystery. Best read as part of the series in order but can be read as a stand-alone.
Murder is close to home in this cozy mystery when Mae finds a body in the dumpster in Happy Trails Campground. Mae puts her sleuthing skills, aka talking to all her friends, to work in creating a timeline of the deceased last day.
In her own words, Mae uses common sense snooping instead of procedural that boyfriend detective Hank uses. Mae helps out though and passes all details to Hank even as he despairs for her safety.
Poor Dottie takes a tumble during the investigation and seems to like the friendships she’s made in recovery. We will have to see what this means for the future.

Entertaining and fun but the body count in Normal, KY is getting crazy.

🎧 I listened to the audio version narrated by Johanna Parker who has done the full series to-date. She does a fantastic job with the southern drawl and different character voices. I listened to this at 1.5 which is faster than my preferred because it upped the drawl to a more reasonable talking speed.

If you are looking for an escape, then any book by author Tonya Kappes would be a perfect choice. Having said that, I love A Camper and Criminals Series. It is one of my favorites. When I read one of these books I feel as if I’m reading about beloved friends. The book grabbed my attention from the start, I finished this book in one day. It is entertaining and humorous. The mystery is well-written with several twists and turns. There is no shortage of suspects and I was completely surprised by the killer.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way, I have been influenced by anyone.

When a body is found at the Happy Trails Campground and a friend of Mae West’s is suspected of murder, it is Mae and the laundromat gang to the rescue. Her boyfriend, Detective Hank Sharp, is afraid this might be the case to come between them. This thought actually made me read faster, praying that wouldn’t be the case. I have to admit to being surprised at the ending. I never figured out who the killer was.

Each mystery in the Camper and Criminals series is better than the one prior, and this one is no exception. Tonya Kappes delivers a challenging mystery in this latest cozy; I was stumped! I like the well-rounded characters, including Dottie, and I enjoy their southern sayings. The scenery, from sunrises to the Daniel Boone National Forest, are shown in beautiful word pictures.

It is spring, and the tourists will be rolling in to Mae’s campground this weekend, including a honeymooning couple and families for the bungalows popular at Happy Trails Campground. This is the season that earns most of the income for the year, so Mae and Dottie are working hard to get everything sparkling clean. When Mae was in town to pick up necessities for campsites and bungalows, she learned that Yaley, a young local woman, had been snatched off the street just 3 days ago. She took a copy of the flier, even though she doesn’t know Yaley, and hopes that what Violet, the reporter, said about Yaley being “snatched” off the street is not true. Everybody wants the delightful town of Normal to be safe for their loved ones and tourists.

That is all about to change when Laney’s body is found by Mae and Dottie. Unfortunately, she was in the dumpster at Happy Trails, where Dottie had heard Yaley’s boyfriend Joel’s old pickup truck and saw somebody throw something wrapped in a tarp in the dumpster … three days ago. Joel owns Grassle’s Garage and has been a good friend to Mae since she moved to town, and she refuses to think Joel could hurt anyone. Rumor has it that they broke up Sunday night. It’s time for the ladies of the Laundry Club, who have helped Mae solve several crimes in the past, to get on the case, despite the feelings of Mae’s boyfriend Hank, detective at the sheriff department. Mae doesn’t want Joel to be railroaded, and since the campground is shut down for the investigation, she needs to get Happy Trails open before the loss of the weekend business. She loves Hank, yet wants the real bad guy held accountable.

This fast-paced Southern cozy mystery is so exciting; I think it is my favorite so far! I could not figure out whodunit, and the various possible suspects just didn’t feel right. We learned about Laney and the people who might have been angry enough with her to get revenge, but certainly not kill her. I was stunned to find out who really “dunit” and why! There are also very unexpected heroes! I highly recommend this latest offering of the lovable Mae West and friends to anyone who enjoys well-written Southern cozy mysteries, camping, and romance.

From a thankful heart: I received an ARC of this novel, and this is my honest review.

“Tents, Trails and Turmoil” by Tonya Kappes the 11th instalment in the " Camper and Criminals Mystery" series. I really enjoy this series and look forward to visiting Normal and the Laundry Club ladies.

I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in two sittings . It was entertaining, full of humour, lots of twists. There were plenty of suspects, the killer did cross my mind once but then I said nah so the ending was a surprise and I love the hero of the story!

As always if I need an escape for a few hours, I know if I pick up one of Tonyas books I will find myself immersed in friendship, humour and a whole lot of mystery. I always have that feel good feeling after reading the books and who wouldn’t want that.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

Review:

The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there at the campground, watching all of the action taking place.

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. You have to love the Laundry Club girls, they are feisty, funny and they have each other’s back at all times. We will have to see if Dottie makes a full recovery and goes back to being her lovable self.

The mystery was well plotted and was not easily solved. There were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through. I had a few people in mind that could be the culprit but I was not completely convinced until it was revealed at the end.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. With great characters, lots of humor and an intriguing mystery, what’s not to like?

A murdered local girl is found in the dumpster in Mae's campground. It's high season and she can't afford to lose any business, so she and the Laundry Club ladies do what they do best - amateur sleuthing much to the dismay of Mae's law enforcement boyfriend, Hank.

While I do enjoy reading about Mae's many adventures, I have to admit I find her behavior frustrating at times. I didn't find as much repetition in this book as I have in the others in the past which was a plus - I guess the author provides that past history and character identification each time so people can read the book as a standalone.

My overall feeling is that this series is just OK for me - I don't love it as I do some of her other series.

Note: I did receive an ARC of this book from the author - my review is voluntary.

Tents, Trails and Turmoil by Tonya Kappes has Mae West, the owner of Happy Trails Campground in Normal, Kentucky, working to get the bungalows ready for incoming guests. Mae and Dottie notice a terrible smell lurking around the campground and begin searching for it. They soon regret their decision when they find the missing Sierra Club tour guide, Yaley Woodard dead in their dumpster. Joel Grassel was dating Yaley and Dottie says she saw him dump a large tarp along with other items in the dumpster two days prior. Detective Hank Sharp, Mae’s boyfriend, closes the campground while they search for evidence. Mae has guests arriving in a couple of days. The only way to ensure the campground is opened in time and clear Joel is for the Laundry Club ladies to find Yaley’s killer. Tents, Trails and Turmoil is the 11th A Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery. It can be read on its own for those new to this amusing series. I thought Tents, Trails and Turmoil was a fun and entertaining story. Mae West is not about to let a murder stand in the way of her busy season at the campground. Hank Sharp would prefer that Mae and her friends keep their noses out of his case. He is afraid that the case could come between him and Mae. Mae does not want that to happen either, but she has a business to consider and people who depend upon her. I like Tonya Kappes conversational writing style which draws the reader into the story and keeps them engaged until the end. I can always count on some good laughs while reading this authors’ books. You know that Mae will get herself into a sticky wicket or two. I liked that the mystery was complex with multiple suspects. It seems that a new suspect kept popping up everywhere Mae went. Red herrings abound as well. There was something mentioned early on that gave me a clue to the killer, and I could not wait to see if I was right. I especially enjoyed how the Laundry Club ladies arrived at the scene and quickly dived into the case. I hope Hank will continue with his updated attitude in future books (I do not want to say too much and spoil it for you). Tents, Trails and Turmoil is a witty cozy mystery with timberland teeming with trails, a surplus of suspects, countless clues, a keen killer, a bothered beau, and sassy Southern ladies.

Mae, just came out of the Trails Coffee Shop, when she was put on the spot by Violet Rhinehammer, announcing someone was snatched, and three, two, one...live! An abduction was news to Mae and stammers through the impromptu interview.

When a body turns up in the Happy Trails Campground, and Dottie Swaggert, the property manager, is an eye witness that places one of their own townspeople in the camp at the site.

Of course, the Laundry Club gals heard the news on the scanner and hightailed it over to Happy Trails. They start discussing the possibilities and Mae questions that her friend is always kind and helpful, so can't picture them hurting a flea. Mae knows the person didn't kill anyone. The gals are on the case! Will they be able to solve it before the tourists go elsewhere, leaving Mae broke?

There's quite a bit of humor, along with a good mystery. It's fun to see how Mae and the gals try to work around Hank, who doesn't want them butting into his case. Yet, Hank knows it's a losing battle. I love the surprise hero in the story!

I received an ARC copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

Am I the only one seriously bothered by “Buster the bulldog” ? I’ve binge read the entire series in the last few weeks and cannot for the life of me figure out how we went from Roscoe the pug, in the last umpteen books and now all of the sudden-Fifi’s baby daddy is Buster the bulldog. 😐Why? How did that make it through editing?

Tents, Trails & Turmoil earns 5/5 Trails of Mystery...Engaging Entertainment!

Tonya Kappes has added another entertaining journey to her A Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery series with this eleventh book partnering Mae and the Laundry Club (a dynamic I thoroughly enjoy) as they seek answers to the disappearance of Yaley Woodard, a local tour guide for the Sierra Club. Mae hadn’t even heard that anyone had been “snatched,” but she personally identified with one who might just up and leave without notice. Mae had been disillusioned by her own small town life and childhood tragedies, so the second she turned “adult,” she left Perrysburg, Kentucky, intending to never return. But, friends and family report Yaley isn’t like that and fear the worse. Unfortunately, it’s worse. Yaley is found at the campground, making the campground a crime scene and circumstantial evidence, an eye witness statement, and a reported argument implicates Yaley’s boyfriend. But...Is the boyfriend just too obvious a suspect? Is there more to him than realized? or Is there something needing to be uncovered? Mae is not going to let him get railroaded, so what would it hurt to ask a few questions? Hank, Mae’s boyfriend, is the local detective, and keeping a close eye on her and her “little gang of sleuths” seems to exacerbate personal conflicts. It isn’t easy to have a detective as a boyfriend.

Is it a...disgruntled boyfriend? Business conflicts? Sibling squabbles? Beyond the clever misdirection, dead ends, and variety of additional felonies exposed, Tonya’s signature southernisms are sprinkled throughout. For me, it’s the characters I find most entertaining, just the right amount of quirky, and many are realistic depictions of friends, family, and acquaintances I recognize in my own world. Cozy fans often suspend belief when the police and civilians interact, but the fact that her boyfriend is the investigating officer keeps an air of realism intake...I like that! Mae’s strength and ability to informally gather evidence, offer theories, and get into trouble are recognized but resigned to by Detective Hank. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!

Bonus! This series always includes delightful “Recipes and Cleaning Hack from Mae West and Women in Normal, Kentucky, and Happy Trails Campground.” Enjoy Campfire Breakfast Hamburgers, Skillet Bacon Cinnamon Rolls, and Campfire Meatballs along with Camping Hack: Know Your Wood ideas, RV Trash Hacks and Black Out RV Curtains.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

When the body of a missing local is found in the dumpster on the property of the Happy Trail Campground, Mae knows she has to figure out the who's and why's of the death. One sure fire way to get reservations cancelled in her campground is to the be hub of a murder. Murder never goes well with tourism.

Tents, Trailers, and Turmoil is only the second book in the Camper & Criminals series by Tonya Kappes I've had a chance to read. I really enjoy the characters and the setting of the series. The interactions between Mae and her campground tenants and the other residents of Normal are fun and realistic.

The mystery was exciting, intriguing, and kept me guessing. Author Tonya Kappes did a wonderful job introducing a number of potential suspects. There were twists and turns that had me going in one direction only to have the mystery shift. The author did a great job building up the suspense until the reveal of the murderer and motive. As Mae and the Laundry Club unravel the murder, shocking events are revealed, suspects are added, as well as removed, from the list, and danger abounds.

I love how the author developed the characters and created such a fun and entertaining world. If felt like I was in Normal, Kentucky with the characters, helping Mae and the Laundry Club figure out who killed the victim and why. I was engaged in the story from the very beginning and loved the adventures as Mae and company “helped” the police figure out the murderer and the motive. You can be sure that I’ll be backtracking to the beginning of the series.

I was provided a copy of this book to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I read an advanced copy for an honest review.
Mae has just returned from a holiday with her boyfriend Hank when she is bombarded with the news of a missing person.

When she returns to her campground, there is a funky smell in the air. She goes for a hike with her dog, and discovers the smell is coming from the campground dumpster. Upon opening it, she finds a body, which she suspects is the missing person.
This is going to put a major crimp in her season with Tourists!

Of course Hank wants her to stay out of it, and the laundry ladies want to help.
It seems that Yadley ( the victem), had a beef with quite a few people and was not as sweet as she originally seemed.

With a host of suspects, that makes you sure you know who the killer is, when you find out who it REALLY IS, it will knock your socks off.
Another great read by Tonya Kappas.

This was a nice twist to the series. This time, Mae finds her campground is an unlikely host - to a murder!

Mae is just out for a nice day when she is basically bombarded by Violet and learns that there is a missing person. While it wasn't affecting Mae, aside from worry about the lady that was missing, she soon finds herself knee deep in a mystery and the coroner knee deep in her trash dumpster.

Someone had dumped Yaley's body (the missing lady) into the Happy Trails Campground dumpster and it his highly suspected it is her new boyfriend, a local owner and mechanic who had help Mae when she first moved in - Joel. His truck was seen by Dottie unloading some trash and a large tarp. It seems his truck was everywhere, but is it really him or just a ploy? Is there more to this than just a jilted lover?

This who-dunnit will leave you surprised, a little saddend, and ready for the next book. Wonderfully written and thought out. There was one thing that bothered me with this story is that Dottie said she had been smelling something dead for the last couple of days. If it was smelling then, why didn't it get checked out sooner? Did no one use the dumpster in those two days also?

Best read as a series, but can be read as a standalone. I was given an advanced copy to review and share my opinion.

I really needed to do some traveling during the quarantine. Going to Happy Trails Campground in Normal, Kentucky was just the ticket to lift my blues. I love this series by Tonya Kappes. It’s set in the Daniel Boone Forest which is a place I have loved since childhood. Mae, Dottie, Hank and the rest are just like being around family. Dottie has an interesting role in this book. I really like her so it was good, but scary, to see her get a bigger role this book. The mystery was really good. I was second guessing just about everybody! She had me so wound up, I almost thought it was Mae. Haha. I’m just kidding you there. We all know Mae is the nosy gal who knows just how to get the gossip. Y’all know I’m not going to tell you about the mystery either. So just get your copy, a snack and a drink, then go camping.
This series is tremendous fun! If you are just starting it, I would strongly suggest starting at the beginning with book one. You can enjoy this as a stand-alone but, no lie, you will miss a lot of the background. Ms Kappes does a great job catching you up without boring the rest of us, but you know it’s the little things you miss.

Wowza, Another great adventure with Mae West and the Laundry Club! This mystery has the gang trying to figure out who murdered a local mechanics girlfriend and dumped her in the Happy trails dumpster. It was quite the mystery a Mae went extra hard in the sleuthing.

Mystery Wise: The Mystery was good, but I was a bit lost in toward the end of it. The real who done it was revealed towards the middle but not really. I like how the story brings back characters and doesn't fret from putting suspicion on anyone lol. I was a bit of a headscratcher in some parts. But it was good!

Relationship Wise: Hank and Mae are getting closer and Hank seems to sorta warm up to Mae's snooping. Not much but to a degree. I wonder if this will blossom in the next book. Dottie omg went though a health scare. like she is stubborn as a mule. I was nervous as the beginning of the book she was very ill or didnt look herself. It is quite the mini side story with her.

All in all, it's a great series so far and cant wait to get into the next one.

Campers & Criminals #11

I highly recommend this series on audio! I love the voices that narrator Johanna Parker uses for all of the various characters.

This was another quick paced story. I was shocked to once again select the correct culprit the moment they were introduced in this story. It still managed to come as a bit of a shock though once the reveal happened. There was lots of action and last minute red herrings thrown in right towards the end.

Dottie gave me a bit of a scare this round after suffering through some health issues. Love seeing the Laundry Club ladies drop everything and show up to help one another out. They truly seem like real and caring friends.

I like Mae and Hank together, but in the previous book and now this one, I'm a bit annoyed with Mae's justification when it comes to lying. Just seems very immature and not healthy for any type of relationship. I know she is coming from a good place and wants to ultimately do whats best for the citizens of Normal, but it just rubs me the wrong way.

I was a bit bummed that there was no mention of looking into Mae's past and reopening the case on the fire from her childhood since it was mentioned in book 10.

Tents, Trails & Turmoil, A Camper & Criminal Cozy (#11) by Tonya Kappes. Another incredible mystery from the Cozy Mystery Queen!

Mae West has been through ups and downs since her husband’s arrest for defrauding people of their hard earned cash. But in spite of what her husband did to the people of Normal, Kentucky, a few people have helped her from the very beginning. When she finds out one of those dear friends is suspected of the very murder that’s closed down Happy Trails Campground, Mae has double the reason to get the crime solved so she can reopen in time for her busiest season.

Regardless of which one of Tonya Kappes books you pick up, you are never disappointed, and this latest entry in the Campers and Criminals Mysteries is no exception. Never hesitate to 1-click, and she absolutely must be on your watch list! You are guaranteed fun, mystery, suspense, and usually just a little love! 4.5 stars rounded to 5.

Another crazy fun adventure in Normal with Mae and her friends in the Laundry Club. They did some good sleuthing this time (as always really), and Mae even got a little praise from Hank who's finally realizing that if he's going to love Mae, he needs to love the sleuthing part of her too. Wow what an ending! I hadn't seen that coming or that killer although something told me at one point they weren't quite done yet.

Dottie had a little side health story going on, but I was glad to see that got resolved too. It was just weird to have Dottie not at her top-notch snarky self lol, although she definitely made up for it!

Another great addition to the Camper and Criminals Cozy Mystery Series. What I love about this series is that with every new book, you learn a little bit more about the cast of characters and the lovely little town they live in. Who killed Yaley and why? This murder hits really close to home for Mae and Dottie and they’ve got to solve it before the Happy Trails Campground suffers! Poor Hank, he is still trying to figure out how to keep Mae from sticking her nose into things. Will this be the case to come between them? I love the Hank and Mae dynamic. I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes from here. The side story is also intriguing, and I just need to know what is going on with Dottie and a new waitress at the diner, Shannon. I also can’t wait to see if we are going to revisit Mae’s hometown again. If you are new to this series, you will fall in love with Normal, Kentucky and definitely want to read the previous books to learn as much as you can about this zany group of women who are always there for each other! There are tons of twists and turns to keep you guessing from start to finish!

Love these books for a quick, relaxing read and glad my library finally got this one! I actually guessed the murderer correctly for once, since this series likes to make it near impossible... The Laundry Club isn't really THAR great at solving mysteries... just good at organizing gossip in a notebook. I hope Mary Elizabeth and Mae are suitably embarrassed for their accusation outbursts, they apologize to the non-guilty parties, and are humble enough to accept it when they decide not to accept the apologies. (Not likely but maybe...)

A great addition to Tonya Kappes’s Camper Criminal Cozy Series. This time Mae West discovers the murder victim in the dumpster at the Happy Trails Campground which Mae owns. The fact that the victim was murdered spreads fast as do the cancellations for the campground. To save her campground and tourism in Normal, KY, it’s important that the killer be found quickly. Mae and the members of the Laundry Club work together to try to help Hank solve the case, although he would rather they let the sheriffs department do the investigation.

I love these characters! They are so real as they deal with the twists life throws them. I enjoyed the plot and the numerous red herrings Ms Kappes threw in. In this one I suspected the murderer early on and was pretty sure about halfway in. I just couldn’t figure out the motive.

I was privileged to receive an advanced copy.
