General Malik Xett doesn't have time for romance. His one and only concern is curtailing the power and influence of the ruthless Sarronti elite. Still, the human female working with him lingers in his mind and fuels his imagination.
Though Kara O'Leary has been attracted to Malik since they first met, she never dreamed he returned her feelings. One kiss ignites a hunger neither can deny, but the timing couldn't be worse. Hostilities rapidly escalate and new threats are revealed. How can Malik and Kara bring freedom to the "world below" when all they can think about is each other?
Note to Readers: This book contains detailed descriptions of sizzling passion only suitable for mature readers.
Passionate Sci-Fi with a touch of danger and a whole lot of sass.
Cyndi has written about rock stars, vampires, and cat shifters, but she's currently focused on outer space. Her stories are fun, fast-paced, and seriously hot. She has made the USA Today Top 100, and every book in the Outcasts series landed on Amazon's Top 100. She is currently working on Shadowborn Rebellion, a spin-off series set in the Outcasts universe.
Yes, it was interesting, but I just couldn't understand why Malik surrendered when he knew that the trial would be rigged? It was so obvious! And it ended in a sham that led to a battle! Obviously...
SLAYER is the first instalment in Cyndi Friberg’s adult SHADOWBORN REBELLION sci-fi romance series-a spin off from the author’s Outcast series, which in turn is a spin-off from Battle born, which is a spin-off from the Shadow Assassins series ;) . This is Sarronti General Malik ‘Slayer’ Xett, and human engineer Kara O’Leary’s story line. You do not have to have read any of the previous series to understand or follow the current story or timeline.
SOME BACKGROUND: The humanoid aliens known as Rodytes needed a home and settled on two uninhabited planets but to their shock a race of elf-like creatures, known as the Sarronti, live underground away from the light. Without any available mates, the male only Rodytes sent teams of Outcasts to kidnap or persuade any and all human females from Earth in an attempt to repopulate and find mates for their struggling males but procreation came at a price including the need for genetically matched DNA, a mutual metamorphosis, and magical intervention. A test for compatibility is filed and there may be as many as five males matched to a single female DNA. Thirty percent of the females returned back to Earth, and the struggling males begin vying for the female’s affections. Outcasts are battle born-their mothers were Bilarrian prisoners forced to breed, with their Rodyte captors, in the hopes of restoring magic to the Rodyte people. To complicate matters, the planet they now inhabit hides a secret deep beneath the planet’s surface, a secret that is determined to take back what once belonged.
Told from several third person perspectives including Malik and Kara, SLAYER follows two paths: the building romance and relationship between Sarronti General Malik ‘Slayer’ Xett and human engineer Kara O’Leary, and the attack against several settlements in an effort to dissuade the Rodyte Outcasts from establishing a home. Kara O’Leary would quickly discover that finding a suitable mate meant meeting and dating males, who although were DNA compatible, were otherwise not her intended mate but something about Sarronti General Malik Xett immediately caught Kara’s attention. An injury would find Kara in the arms of Malik Xett, and their fated relationship would begin. What ensues is the building romance between Malik and Kara, and the potential fall-out as a war with a rogue faction of Sarronti is about to spiral out of control.
Kara O’Leary struggled to find a place with her human family, and the option of starting a new life on an unknown planet gave Kara a hope for a better future. Like Earth, not everyone is happy with the newcomers or the numerous factions of alien outposts, and as such, specieism, racism and discrimination are about to take hold placing the planet and its’ population at war. Kara O’Leary caught the eye of General Malik Xett from the moment they met but Malik kept his distance until he could keep it no more.
The relationship between Kara and Malik is one of immediate attraction but neither one was willing to take the next step until a potential suitor with a history of aggression places Kara’s life in danger. Kara, although genuinely attracted to General Xett was unwilling to commit to a happily ever after, and needed more time to establish herself and start a new life on a planet she would soon come to call home. Malik knew Kara was his forever mate but bided his time in the hopes that Kara would accept him, as well. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large colorful, energetic and magical cast of secondary and supporting characters including Malik’s mother and Sarronti Prime Healer Arpovae, his brother Salvo (with the ability to conjure portals), and their cousin Jaron; Ayran ‘Scorcher’ Marr; as well as Kara’s friend and cook Natalie Marino. We witness the return of Overlord Kage Razel and Lady Eza, Warlord Torak (Outcasts Series); and the requisite evil Tajon Marr, and Sarronti elite Kantor Alonova and Indrex Farr, whom we also met in the Outcasts series.
SLAYER is a story of family, friendships, discrimination and love. The Sarronti caste system is heart breaking and yet familiar in many of today’s less than progressive societies. The Ayrontu, the highest, most prestigious designation is an ascribed position from birth, and it is the Ayrontu that are determined to remove the unwelcome intruders. The premise is engaging and intriguing; the characters are dynamic and captivating (Jaron is flirty and fun); the romance is seductive and spicy.
The character building and world building in this novel are top notch, and the descriptions have this world leaping off the pages. This is the first book in a series and the first book I’ve read by this author and I will be looking forward to reading more from her. This is a complete novel, and does not end on a cliffhanger, but I still believe reading any series in order will enhance each story. With that said, there is a lot going on in this book, and the romance between Kara and Malik brews perfectly. Sarronti males are paired with human women through a mate locator. If there are more than one mate available, the women can choose the one they prefer. There is one that Kara is matched to, that she declines – and he won’t take no for an answer, until Malik steps in.
There is a lot of action going on this book, and some of the descriptions weigh the book down a bit, but when it comes to scifi, it’s not always an easy task to convey the world in the author’s mind to paper and have others believe it. This book left a lot of unanswered questions, but I believed this story and felt what the characters were feeling, and for me, that makes this an easily recommended book.
ADULT Alpha Alien🐺🍆⛲🔪 Romance💕 and sort of an Adventure with Paranormal Elements👻 A Strong human heroine falls in love with a rebel elfin Sarronti General🐺🍆⛲🔪. Massive quantities of inane human like dialogue💭 and very little action spoiled the book for me.
There are instances of paranormal abilities by the Elves, such as healing by laying on of hands and the ability to open instant transport portals💫.
ARC Provided by Booksprout🌱 I also got this ebook with KU.
The book is well written without errors, it's just too many pages of boring dialogue where the author gives the alien General🐺🍆⛲🔪 a human personality.
Kara O’Leary, senior project manager for the multi-site construction project, sat at her desk on her lunch break and played back the holographic advancement challenge of the elf-like Sarronti male, Malik Xett, who had captivated her the first time she saw him. The Sarronti military advanced their rank through combat, so she had looked up the recording of his recent fight to become General. Her cabin mate and best friend, Natalie Marino, walked in and laughed that she was watching that vid again! But she asked for Kara’s help and they could also have lunch.
The human women were matched through a mate-locator which found genetically compatible females for the males and the women could choose one if there were multiple possibilities. Kara and Natalie had both been matched, but their potential mates had died when a shuttle exploded. The Outcasts had originally kidnapped 3,000 females, but many refused to be courted and were eventually allowed to return home. Although Kara stayed, she had not connected with any of her potential mates. Only the Sarronti Malik had interested her, and the Sarronti lived primarily underground due to the ultraviolet sunlight. With the highly effective sunscreen the Outcasts had created, they could now remain on the surface – but tensions were mounting among the warrior groups.
A fight was brewing outside and Kara saw the hot-headed, violent Outcast Tyllis who was one of her genetically-compatible possible mates – but he was too aggressive to even consider and she refused his requests to court her 3 times already. Tyllis attacked one of the Sarronti, then stomped over to Kara. Natalie ran to get security while Kara tried to talk him down from his anger. Tyllis wouldn’t back down this time, claiming she was a tease – despite her firm refusals of his attention! When he tried to grab her, suddenly Malik was there and pulled her against him. He told Tyllis to apologize, which he refused, and it became obvious he was going to escalate this. Malik turned to Kara to tell her to return to the Wheel until he dealt with this, but Tyllis used that distraction to punch him and split his lip. In the fight, Tyllis knocked a leg of the table and scalding sauce poured down Kara’s leg. Malik immediately picked her up and raced toward the cool water of the river to stop the burn. She was in agony, so he told her he could help and, as he touched her burned skin, he took the pain away. Her side and legs, however, were blistering and she was going into shock so he carried her to a portal and took her to his mother, the Prime Healer, as Kara nodded off to sleep. And his mother’s questions as she worked concerning his hopes for this human made it clear she knew how he felt and was eager for grandchildren! Would he pursue his feelings? When he held her and saw the look in her eyes, he knew she felt it too. But they were on the brink of civil war! The timing could not have been worse.
Wow, the world building in this book is amazing! I didn’t read any of the other series related to this, but this book was fantastic! The characters literally jumped off the pages, more real than the reader would have expected! The reader’s emotions were also reacting as the story line raced along. There was so much more going on as well, but that would take us in a totally new direction and this was probably enough to let you know this is one book you absolutely need to read and enjoy first-hand! It’s really good in many ways. If you are not already a fan, you will be!
Slayer is a great way to find out about the Shadowborn rebels, the humans who’ve been taken to be their mates, and in particular about the Sarronti race that’s native to the world the rebels have come to claim as their own. I loved that Friberg continues to explore the complex Sarronti society she’s created while at the same time breaking it down by showing the areas where it’s flawed. The caste system of the Sarronti is fascinating to see, in the sense that it innately permeates what the Sarronti do and at the same time is completely wrong for them.
I really enjoyed Malik and Kara as protagonists. They’re such strong characters, and so right for one another. The bad guy is truly reprehensible, and I loved seeing how his loss continues to create the needed shift in Sarronti viewpoints. I’ve loved this saga, and I can’t wait for more.
My one gripe? The Sarronti have been underground dwellers for generations (which is why the rebels claimed the supposedly uninhabited planet), but other than a brief allusion to a lotion that’s been created to allow them to be in sunlight, they can go anywhere they want anytime in this book. That was way too easy for me. I’d rather see a permanent solution or more references to time spent reapplying this lotion. Cause man, it lasts a loooong time based on what happens in this book!!
Slayer is both a good and a bad book to start reading Friberg. Good, because there’s a great introduction to all that’s happening in the Shadowborn Rebellion world that Friberg has meticulously set up in previous series (Outcasts in particular). Bad, because you miss all the detail that’s in those books, and then you aren’t experiencing the richness that is this saga. So while I can say it’s a good place to start with Friberg, treat yourself to a favor and read this series from the start if this book appeals to you!
Slayer is a spin-off of the author’s Outcast series (which itself was a spin-off). While it picks up with the Sarronti’s fight for equality & freedom from their elite class after the events at the end of the Outcast finale in Overlord, this still works as a good starting point into the author’s universe.
General Malik Xett is honorable, sexy, a little bit sweet and all badass when needed. Kara is intelligent, likeable and able to stand tall & strong against overbearing males without being stupid about it. Their relationship moves steadily if quickly although the author does a good job of not making it feel rushed. Secondary characters show depth and there is political intrigue, new revelations about the Sarronti and action to keep the story interesting and moving along. While keeping some of the characters straight with the vast cast of alien names was sometimes caused a little pause, it wasn’t enough to distract from the story. All in all, a good solid and enjoyable sci-fi read that moves the author’s universe from one focus to the next without overwhelming or leaving short old or new readers the relevant background needed for the transition. Look forward to the next story in the series and am curious which of the possible hints that may be.

It ended!! That’s how I’m starting my review, it ended... Cyndi, I need more, I mean what happens next with the rebellion and all. I loved this series, Kara and Malik are an awesome couple, with the positive being said. I think the main characters needed a little more interaction with the outpost crews, did they resolve any of the conflicts, (spoiler) did both sides work together? What happened with Velma? Oh does Salvo and Natalie get together? See the book ended to soon, I mean how are the other couples doing? I know is the Elf’s turn I these series, but... oh and does Kara develop any powers, does she ever visit Sirza? Ok enough ranting, I loved this book, I love this series and yes, I highly recommend this book and it totally has an HEA, you don’t particularly have to read in order, of the series, but most definitely helps to know what’s going on and how scenes have come about!

Kara finds herself drawn to watching recordings of the advancement fight of General Malik Xett. Kara O'Leary had been kidnapped and brought to the planet Sarronti but when offered the chance to return to Earth she refused despite having failed to link with any of her three genetic matches. She finds herself drawn to the Sarronti General Malik Xett who does not seem to spare her feelings but when one of her rejected matches gets aggressive he intervenes. In the following fight Kara gets scalding hot food pour down her side and Malik rushes her to a healer who just happens to be his mother. As they talk they find they are attracted to each other but with the atmosphere is tense and ready to ignite into civil war at anytime Kara refuses to be rushed.

Kara was a human who had been sent to the planet as mates for the Outcasts. Though her genetic match had been killed, she remained as the project manager for the multi-site construction of Outposts for the "Rebel Sarronti" and "Outcasts". Through her work, she meets General Malik, who is her fated mate. Together they work to get the Outposts built amid simmering tension between the "Aryontu" Ruling Elite and the rebels. I found this a complex, dramatic story that built slowly towards a civil war conflict. Kara and Malik's relationship was pivotal to the story, only fated mates were able to connect psychically, and so many lives were saved.

This delightful quick read creates a vibrant universe with extensive world building that bordered on leaving me wondering if I missed a prequel, or the author simple took the time to plot that much rich and interesting backstory so the world this story takes place in would feel so real.
Kara has been through a lot, on Earth, and since she left Earth, but none of that prepared her for General Xett finding out she has a crush on him.
This wonderful book had so many interesting people, places, and threads, that I am eagerly anticipating more in this series.

This is book 1 to the Shadowborn Rebellion and wow are the scenes hot or what my kindle is still smoking lol the sexual chemistry between General Malik and Kara was 🔥🔥🔥they are amazing characters and even though Malik was a warrior he had a heart of gold when it came to Kara. Sorry guys I’m not going to give any spoilers because this story is too good to spoil there are fantastic descriptions, action, adventure, suspense, danger, drama, twists and turns, passion and so much more to keep you entertained and turning the pages and I can’t wait to read book 2. I loved this story and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
This book is the first in a series, however it's a spin off, of a spin off, of a spin off. So there is a lot of back history and world building that isn't explained because it's assumed the reader already knows. I felt like I was supposed to be more invested in the story then I was. I wanted the good guys to win because they're the good guys, but I didn't really care about their cause or feel the stakes they were against if they lost. That being said the book was entertaining enough that I would read the next in the series, but I won't be going back to read any of the books before this.

Kara signed up to be mated as an alien bride but when she arrived none of her matches appealed to her. But Malik did; he was off limits. Malik had noticed Kara and had began feeling protective of her. When a chance for them to get together came about he made it his mission to convince her she was his soulmate all while being involved in between two fighting factions on the planet she was on. Fun and interesting

The first shot is taken. The response is launched. Then full on take over. Kara had not clicked with her potential mates. She is fascinated with a Sorranti male though. Not just any male. General Malik Xett. Kara is assertive but hides a vulnerability. Malik bring out everything in her. During a crisis they lean on each other. Can't wait for the next book!!!
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Decent alien mate romance with a strong heroine determined to choose her mate on her terms and an alien determined to make her his. Malik is a elf like warrior that falls for the heroine even when she is promised to another suitor. I liked that he respects her independent spirit and lets her set the pace to their bonding. There wasn't much angst but entertaining nonetheless.
This story keeps you interested and turning pages from the very beginning. I've not read the other stories in this series but the story drags you in and pulls you into the rebellion and the mystery. Kara is attracted to Xett but she want to be sure that he's the one. Will they have the time to explore their relationship of with others get in the way? Book one in the Shadowborn Rebellion series a well written story that kept me turning pages. What a start to this series. General Malik Xett and Kara O'Leary's story there is suspense, drama, danger, a corrupt Ayrontu elite group, villains, a kangaroo court, and romance. And lets not forget Slayer you do not mess with him! Where is Velmar? I can not wait until the next book is out. Well written story full of danger, chemistry and love
This is another rich story by this author that has fab characters, that are both strong, caring but not without vulnerabilities, well detailed world building, chemistry and danger. So much going on in this series opener and I found myself madly turning pages to see how things would come together. Now I'm waiting for the next book...sigh ;) Good fun!
It was love at first sight when Kara saw Malik, the elf like warrior. She was one the human women that were part of the program to match the women to warriors. When Malik comes to her rescue when she refuses the advances of another, their lives will be changed forever. I loved the action and passion this story line provides.

Without having read any other story in this series, i must say that I was very quickly immersed into the rebellion. a caste system to overthrow, a mystery to solve and a regime to break. Xett's instinct to soul-mate is only tempered by Kara' desire to be sure. Will they have a chance to explore their future or will actions of others keep them apart?
DNF I give it a 3 because this is not a new series. This is not a stand alone. You better have read all the other off shoots of this series or you will be lost. I think the author does a fair job of trying to bring the other story lines into this "new" series but it doesn't do enough. These books need better labeling in order for new readers to follow the story line.
This well-written, book 1 in the Shadowborn Rebellion Series that has great characters with depth and history. The story is good and I cannot wait until I see more books from this author. All the one I have read so far are very good. Must read

A great start to a new series matching the Sarronti General to a human that is in charge of the building of a co-op village. He's a warrier and she's an engineer and together they are with the rebellion and trying to over throw the Elite and do away with the caste system so that people are judged by merit not birth.
Cyndi Friberg can write a believable story of the most amazing beings! In space! This one is so good. People are the same all over, even aliens. Some of us try to get along and some of us - don’t. But meeting a soul mate? Oh, that’s just the best! Love these stories. Recommend. 💕
This book is entertaining and filled with action, adventure and intrigue. The interaction and chemistry between the characters is great. I just think the ending was abrupt. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
The great plot was well written and the characters were so well developed that as I turned each page the chemistry between the characters kept me totally hooked until the very last page!

The current General of the military and a Shadowborn rebellion leader finds his soul mate in one of the Outcast human women. In this newest series that is a great addition to this series.
