Some chapters are better than others; I recommend discretionary use in a pre-service teaching classroom. Chapters on critical literacy and discourse analysis are very useful as accessible companions to reading Gee, Janks and Fairclough. Very Australian -- that's less a critique than an observation, but after a while you can almost hear the accent.

Had to read it for one of my Uni units, I feel it wasn’t overly useful though.

Some interesting stuff here. I only skimmed through it. Bit of a lie to say I read the whole thing. But how could I with so many other more interesting books (in other words, not uni-related) to read? For the sake of fairness I give it three stars, which is kinder than the marker will probably be with my exam paper.

Useless textbook. Will never refer back to it. Lofty descriptions with poor to nil relevant examples. Difficult to follow. Constantly referred to outside texts to gain meaning of what was being discussed in the text. Not staying on my bookshelf!
