Once Bitten, Twice Turned

Rate this book
Something dangerous is preying on Shadow Hollow, and even magic can't discover the truth.

Just when Hazel Goode finally solves her sister's untimely murder, another body turns up dead. Only this time, it's not a witch. It's a werewolf, and he's been mutilated beyond recognition.

A magic ritual shows the culprit murdering these people is actually dead itself, and Hazel feels an obligation to take care of the supernatural goings on in Shadow Hollow. The SHPD can't be trusted, and the Gallatin Co Sheriff's Office isn't equipped for supernatural crime. That leaves Hazel and her magic to do what she can...with the help of a sexy, but brooding, vampire.

As the murders escalate with no common MO, nobody is safe. And if Hazel can't figure out what "dead" thing is killing people, more people will die. But how is she supposed to save the day when her sister's ghost is telling her the only way to do so is to tap into dark and dangerous magic that goes against everything Hazel believes in?

CREATURES OF THE MIDWEST continues with Book Once Bitten, Twice Turned, a small town urban fantasy murder mystery series that fans of True Blood and Midnight, Texas are finding utterly addicting.

Welcome Home, Hazel . . .

Hazel Goode is a fire witch who now views Shadow Hollow as her second chance and her home. She is returning from Georgia with all her things to permanently relocate. She has a job at the Wilde Aire, the garage where she works for Liam Shutter who texted her about a ‘69 Boss 429 Mustang from Bozeman that was waiting for her skills. And she was actually eager to get back to her haunted house and her ghostly roommates, even though she suspects they are not quite as enthusiastic as she is about that! Hazel’s magic seems to be getting stronger, but she still misses her sister Willow. And as she unlocked the door to her home, stepped inside, and turned on the lights, a group of familiar friendly faces with huge smiles and red Solo cups welcomed her home with a loud cheer! They wanted to be sure that she knew how much they all missed her. Even the ghosts didn’t mess up her bedroom and neatly turned down the corner of her quilt for her. She was certain it was just for this one night, but they made her feel loved by their actions.

Now that Hazel has returned, the town needs help when something “dead” is killing the residents and mutilating the bodies. What do the murders have in common that might help her in tracking the bad guy? Will Corwin Pitts, the sexy two-hundred-sixty-nine year old vampire, be there to help her with this task of finding the killer? Will she be powerful enough to protect herself and overcome whatever is committing these murders?

Hazel Goode is returning to Shadow Hollow, Montana where she will move for good from Georgia She has her haunted house with ghosts and a job at Wilde Aire, the garage and her boss Liam. She's a witch who can see ghosts and has her dead sister Willow haunting her. Her sister wants her to do a ritual that will bind her to this realm. Hazel is relunctant because it is blood magic and
dark. Then two murders occur in the town. The Shadow Hollow witches invite her to a ritual for scrying. The sheriff has asked for their help with the murders. So she goes. She is surprised by the fact that she sends out energy that knocks everyone down but when they scrye she sees something that no one else sees. She thinks this is a little coincidental and she doesn't believe in coincidental. She goes to talk to Corwin Pitts,a two-hundred-sixty-nine year old vampire to find out if he had anything to do with the murders. That's when she tells him about the shadow
she saw. She decides to go the the library and ask the Librarian a question. When she receives an answer with the loan of books she discovers that it could be a revenant. She and Corwin decide to investigate. They see the shadow she saw in the scrying. A few days later they manage to capture the shadow only to find that it is a male that Corwin had turned into a vampire. The only problem is that Corwin is the last vampire other than her sister who he turned a few years before. How is the question when she discovered the reason for him being the last vampire. Is this the end of the mystery or is there more coming? Who turned Eric into what he is now? Is the dead mayor's cronies still up to no good? How will this effect Hazel and her friends?
And why does it feel like she is being drawn to The Crazy Mountains? What's waiting for her there?
Mystery upon mystery with a little romance thrown in. Will keep the reader guessing till the last page.

Hazel has decided to take up residence in Montana. It has taken her two weeks to get her things and come back. Everyone sorely missed her and showed it. Unfortunately, things do not quiet down! Now, they have murders occurring again. This time, the flesh is missing from the bodies and blood drained~ Hazel will discover the werewolves in this journey. They have a new Sheriff and are fixing to have a new Mayor.

The person running for Mayor is an evil person. He also has his sights set on Hazel for some reason. She has participated in the local coven meeting. She seems to be developing stronger and more powers. They think she might be the prophesized witch that would come to town to protect it! Her attraction to Corwin is growing. Her sister has found a way for them to be together…only, what will it cost in the end? The Librarian will supply more information…but what will it cost her in the long run?

The Brotherhood shall make another appearance. She meets the notorious doctor affiliated with the dead Mayor, and inadvertently, will gain access to his clinic under scrupulous conditions. She will meet an old acquaintance of Corwin’s…just not in a great way! She will meet a new infectious disease pack doctor hoping to provide a new cure! They will discover one of the reasons they do not trust or like the new Mayoral candidate. All of this will lead to one heck of a second journey in the newest book in the next adventure of Hazel and company!

Ava Silvers is still a relatively new author for me. I’ve only actually read one other book by her, Book 1 in her Creatures of the Midwest. That book (separately reviewed) was so much fun, however, that I’ve been salivating for the sequel. Well, that sequel is here. It’s Once Bitten, Twice Turned (Book 2), and its at least as wonderful as Book 1. I’m an addicted fan of True Blood, both the TV series and (even more so) the books. The publisher’s blurb is almost right that if you enjoyed that you’ll enjoy this series. Frankly if you liked that TV or book series you’ll likely end up totally addicted to this series. Two books in and I certainly am. I had no idea that I’d love small town urban fantasy murder mystery books so much, not that Hazel Goode would become a favorite fictional character, but that’s happened and I highly recommend both this book and the series.

Continuing this story just after book 1. We find Hazel making her permanent move to this magical town. Her haunted house ghosts are mostly tolerating her presence. There is a mystery in town, murder and partly eaten bodies are turning up. A magical experience shows it to be someone already dead. It can't be her friend the vampire as they don't eat flesh.
Hazel's powers seem to be getting stronger, could it be the town, the presence of other witches or just time? I'm really enjoying getting to know her.
Missing her sister dreadfully, her spirit seems weaker has Hazel looking at dark magic. Can she bring her sister back in any way or destroy herself trying?
What a fun storyline, so much going on and wonderful characters. Book 3 here I come.

Hazel is back in Shadow Hollow this time for good. After moving she’s settling into life in this supernaturally quirky small town when things start to get interesting again. There’s an election for a new mayor, some very disturbing deaths and some new supernatural species discovered by Hazel. All our friends from book one are still around making life fun and confusing in the case of the vampire. What you have with this book is a mix of the absurdly funny, b horror show and paranormal cozy. A great mix in my opinion and a great story without a doubt. Can be read as a stand alone but to get the full picture of relationships reading book one is advised plus you’ll get another good read if you do.

This is the second book in this series, and I liked this book even better than the first one. There was more dialogue, more excitement, and more action. Hazel is settling into her new hometown, finding more friends, and learning her Craft. She is still missing her sister, but she is trying to find a way to connect with her ghost. But, people are dying around her town, and they need to catch the culprit before it’s too late. The only true fly in the ointment was a little disappointment with the end; I found a little…well, anti-climactic. However, this was a well-written book with great characters, and I’m looking forward to the next. Recommend!

Hazel Goode has more magical adventures in Shadow Hollow. There are more questions that must be answered but the story holds you spell bound. There’s even a hint of romance to be found in the next book. All her friends and allies make appearances and her sister is going to make Hazel’s life interesting. Hazel, Liam, Sherrif Jackson, Corwin

Hazel is returning to Shadow Hollow, MT from Marietta GA. She will continue working as a mechanic for Liam. The house she rents is haunted by three ghosts. Hazel is attracted to Corwin, but is unsure of him.

Charectorization and plotting are excellent.

Just when you think life is getting back to normal, more murder. Love the minimal way magic gets used and science is used in conjunction. A lot happens and I cannot wait to read the next book to find out what is next!
