Jesus stepped out of the water of baptism into uninhabitable wilderness, emerging forty days later to offer the water of life for those thirsting for God’s presence. A little more than two centuries later, a group of Christians withdrew from a spiritually barren Roman Empire to find their faith blossom in the stony soil of the Egyptian desert. The Logues offer a Lenten journey inspired by the many passages of scripture that use images of water in the desert as a sign of the healing and wholeness that come through God alone. To this they add the distilled wisdom of the Desert Mothers and Fathers and the surprisingly rich inspiration of the plants and animals that thrive in an arid land. Along the way, they will share the ways our faith speaks to the barren places in our lives and how those times of drought can be a source of strength.
My husband and I so much enjoyed walking this holy journey with our bishop-elect and his wife. Thank Y’all for sharing your stories. My spiritual life is only enriched because of them.
This book was to be the basis of our Sunday School discussion and teaching during Lent of 2020. The Corona Virus pandemic interfered with Sunday School. However, I read the book as my Lenten discipline. The book included a short reading (about 5 minutes) for each day of Lent, with a theme for each week; Humility, Forgiveness, Generosity, Vocation & Constancy, Sabbath & Moderation, and Worship & Loving-Kindness.
After his baptism, Jesus spent forty days in the desert wilderness meditating and praying in preparation of his life's ministry. Lent is also a designated time in the liturgical calendar for personal meditation and prayer in preparation for Easter and our lives. Authors Frank and Victoria Logue offer a series of daily Lenten meditations inspired by the Sonoran Desert landscape, its plants and animals, scripture, and the teachings of the Desert Fathers. The series of meditations are group by weekly themes with each mediation concluding with a few self-reflection questions. During this Lent, it has been an enlightening internal safari of self-discovery.
