This book was not written for your Apple Daily-reading Hong Kong local. Though it’s not expressly stated, it reads like a primer on the complexity of HK politics for mainland Chinese skeptics in the reader-friendly format of a FAQ that you aren’t even expected to peruse in order. The barrier of entry, in short, is low, and repetitions plenty. But while I thought I knew most of the answers when I skimmed the questions, I still gained immensely from the depth of the analysis, judiciously presented based on historical facts, cultural artifacts and legal documents. It turns out I don’t know everything about my hometown.
