General Arnold Brown, was the 11th General of the Salvation Army and its international leader from 1977 to 1981.
As its international leader, Brown travelled extensively around the world, calling on kings and presidents during his progress. Among his particular interests was the organisation's principal choir, the International Staff Songsters, which he launched in 1980. On his election as General, Brown set out his aims for Salvationists thus: "Everything they can to make better known Jesus Christ and His saving power as the only hope for a sinning, suffering world; everything they can to demonstrate indisputably in what they say and do that the grace of God enables men and women to live clean and holy lives filled with the joy of service to God and their fellows; in short, everything they can to bring heaven to earth."
He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1982. His publications include The Gate and the Light (1984); Fighting for His Glory (1988); With Christ at the Table (1991); Occupied Manger - Unoccupied Tomb (1994); and Reading Between the Lines (1997).
