PRELUDE TO NEVAEH is a short story and prequel to Born To Magic, Tales Of Nevaeh, Volume I. Prelude is a short story giving the background as to how and why Nevaeh came to be, of how Roth found Nevaeh, and of how the people and animals of Nevaeh evolved. This is the story of Solomon Roth, and how he came to Nevaeh.
International award winning author and double B.R.A.G. Honoree, I have published forty-six novels including Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, and suspense thrillers. I live in Florida, with mywife Bonnie.
A Hybrid Traditional and Independent Author, I became an independent publisher, author, and writer in 2008 with Angels in Mourning, my 'homage' to the old-time private detective's of the 50's and the 60's. (I used to sneak them from my parents' night tables and read them as a young boy.) Angels is a contemporary take on the old-style noir detective and won the Amazon.com Book of the Month Reader's Choice Award.
The first book of my Sci-Fi Fantasy series Tales of Nevaeh. Born to Magic, is an international Amazon genre Best Seller, Awarded the Silver medallion from the Drunken Druid International Literary Awards, and was a Kindle Review of Books finalist for Fantasy Book of the year. The final book of the series, A Dance of Light and Dark, Volume 8, was released on September 1, 2022.
Among my Mysteries & Thrillers are The Hyte Maneuver, (a Literary Guild alternate selection); The Sokova Convention, The Morrisy Manifest, Desperately Killing Suzanne, The Whistleblower’s Daughter, and Out of the Shadows. My first non-fiction book, The Indie Writer’s Handbook, Designed for Independently Published authors, was honored with a B.R.A.G. Medallion for literary excellence, and awarded the Bronze Medal by the Florida Authors and Publishers Association.
I wrote a contemporary fiction novel, based on the Harry Chapin Song, A Better Place to Be, was named a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree, signifying a book of the highest literary quality, and written by an independent writer; and, A Better Place to Be also received the Bronze Medal Award from Ireland's Drunken Druid International Literary Awards.
Prelude to Nevaeh is an incredible short story that is so much more than backstory. It’s the science-fiction of the future meeting the post-apocalyptic fantasy of the far future.
It details how High King Roth came to land on Nevaeh, how he used his practical skills and against all odds managed to “rediscover” Earth after a period of controlled ship-board stasis. He sees how “backward” and ruined Earth has become, and takes measures to become a part of the new culture, which is based on dominions, medieval warriors, and astonishing beasts.
I really liked the introduction to the beasts of Nevaeh because I thought a glossary or something of the like felt like it might have been missing from the first book Born to Magic. I was pleased to see a return of the warrior rivalry that was used a lot in the author’s work Queen of Knights. I usually only give extremely short fiction a rating of 4 stars maximum because I always feel unfulfilled, but on the contrary Prelude to Nevaeh made me want to read more in the series and reminded me why David Wind really is a master of his fiction.
Having already read book 1, I was familiar with both the series premise and the main characters. Prelude to Nevaeh reads like an extended introduction to the main character, Solomon Roth, and his 3,000 year-long journey to the world of Nevaeh. The only thing not to like about it was its short length, as I would have loved a novel-sized book with the tale of how Roth united Nevaeh under his Dominion. Hopefully, some day Wind will share this story as well.
The only problem with this short story is it should be a book, a long book. I really enjoyed it and book that takes place about twenty years later in Nevaeh but this deserves a full-length book of it's own.
I enjoyed this short novella. It explained in better detail how Roth came to Earth and that he had a vision from the beginning. Meeting Enaid just solidified his belief that Earth was still his home.
This brief introduction definitely whets the appetite for more of the story. This does arrive in Infiniy's Doorway a splendid mix of magic, mystery, love, action, and a happy ending!
