A thoroughly solid biography of Helen Keller. Unlike many versions of her life story, this has the benefit of covering the entire scope of a fascinating life. It is typical of biographies of Helen Keller to focus almost exclusively on her early life. Then, perhaps briefly, speak about how she lived a fascinating and important life afterwords. However, for the purposes of children, they rarely go into much detail.

This biography addresses her adult relationship with Annie Sullivan, her difficulties with Annie’s husband, her own failed attempt to become married, her perpetual financial struggles, and more. All the while, it does so in a style of prose that is appropriate and geared towards younger readers - perhaps around 4th grade level.

For children of approximately 10 years of age, I don’t think it would be possible to get a more thorough and comprehensive biography.

I have always been a big fan of Helen Keller. She is such an inspiration to all people of any age. She overcame so many circumstances to get to where she was. She never let her disabilities get in the way of her accomplishing her goals. This is a chapter book so you would use this in your 4th or 5th grade classroom. You could have a class set and have the class go into a really in depth study on Helen Keller for social studies but have them do creative writing, and helping them learn all about Helen Keller.

I am definitely interested in reading her actual memoir but I do appreciate her perspective on life. I have both my sight and hearing and can’t imagine my life without both. To have her show you what her life is like is an incredibly different perspective so I’ll look forward to reading it instead of just the synopsis!

Personal reaction:
I checked this book out because I personally believe that Helen Keller may be one of the most inspirational people to ever live. I loved this book because I learned lots of new facts about Keller that I didn’t know before, but also didn’t feel like I was reading an encyclopedia which is important when considering whether or not its appropriate for children!

Read Aloud/Nonfiction Uses:
I Am Hellen Keller tells the Keller’s life long battle with a rare disease that made her both deaf and blind. At age 6, she met her teacher, Annie Sullivan who taught Helen to read Braile and speak sign language. After reading, you could hold a class discussion about Helen’s life and talk about various things such as what if you were born with Helen’s disability? or How do you think Helen felt before meeting her teacher? This book is awesome because not only does it tell the incredibly interesting and inspiring story of Kellers life, but it also comes with a timeline of her life and the top 10 most important things to know about her. Although this book is very factual, it is also a story that students would be engaged in and enjoy hearing being read aloud!


Independent Reading:
This could be a good book to use on study of Kellers life. Upper elementary to middle school age could use this as a resource for research!

I loved this book. I thought it was inspiring what Helen Keller was able to accomplish. With being blind and deaf she was able to write an autobiography. I also liked how Annie never gave up on teaching Helen sign language. But I still think it would've been hard to be in Annie or Helens position. I thought it was the most inspiring how Helen Keller made the best of her life with the disadvantages. I would really suggest this book.

My daughter needed to read a book on Helen Keller to read her sign language badge, so I choose this one. It was an accurate accounting of her life, but not an enjoyable read (very dry).

I loved this book. It was so interesting. I think it would be very hard to be in Anne's place. It would be extremely difficult to teach a blind and deaf child words. I think it's amazing that she graduated from college. She lived a good life. She was very successful.

learned so much reading this book. I read it in Spanish and thoroughly enjoyed how the book present the life of this remarkable woman. A completely accessible read in both languages, although it will take some support if the student is learning Spanish.
