Highlander Forever #3
Swept By The Highlander
After plunging back in time to 16th century Scotland, Elena stumbles into a dangerous mystery that threatens her life as much as the handsome guard captain Brendan threatens her heart… Elena Cross is one dang good cop. She’s worked hard to establish herself in a male-driven world, but when she walks through a door and ends up in ancient Scotland, she’s forced to face a new reality in a place where women often don’t garner the same respect and the word “witch” is still used an excuse to burn someone at the stake. Brendan Grant quickly finds himself falling for the feisty, beautiful red-head who came crashing into his world from the future. But when a mysterious illness and then disappearances hit threaten the men of his guard, and all signs point to Elena, he can’t help be wary of the woman who is being accused of being a witch…or worse. With the clan, and Brendan, looking at her with distrustful eyes, Elena must convince Brandan to trust her, despite how bad things may appear, and use her investigative skills to clear her name. Swept By The Highlander is the third book in the Highlander Forever series, perfect for fans of brooding heroes, intrepid heroines, and page-turning time-travel romance. In order to explain my review, I need to post ** SPOILER ALERT **
I love Scottish time travel novels. I really was looking forward to enjoying this. The transplant of a Baltimore PD Detective to medieval Scotland was ok no problem with that. I felt angry and disappointed in the way the h's character was revealed. She did an outstanding job as a detective and she knew she was good. She had the instincts, insight, gut reaction to deal with the criminal elements of society. But the story never covered her talents as a detective in Baltimore. Now she was in Scotland. For about three quarters of the book I was totally frustrated with her character. Instead of using her detective training to solve a mysterious occurrence in the area it seemed all her training went out the window. The story never really highlighted any of the skills she had to offer. Such as defensive training. She could have been training the guards how to deal with a perp with hand to hand combat. It mentioned that Anna was training the men in sword fighting so how come Elena could not have been put into a situation like that? Furthermore all the story showed was how idiotic she behaved not using her detective skills at all. It is revealed towards the end that the villain Una had some kind of mind control over her. Okay believable, but my goodness even after she broke out of the hypnotic trance she was in, the author did not incorporate anything to highlight her detective skills to bring the villain to justice. All she did was show her bravery. She used herself as bait. The way Elena was portrayed she could have been anybody. The story did not need her to be a detective. So why make her one? IDK I just felt upset and irritated that Elena's character could have shined brighter if given a chance. Instead she became a mind-controlled man hating nobody cares for me except Una, it's is me and her against the world of men and women. Also, there was no romance between Elena and Brendan. It was physical attraction and lust. At the end they declared their love for each other. Hello?? There is no story there. I have read three of Rebecca Preston's previous books and there is no consistency in the quality of her work. One was a five star; one was a one star and one was a three star. Like I said no consistency. I do not recommend this book. Don't waste your time.

I have read this author for a long time, starting with her Jane Austen fanfiction a couple of years ago. She writes in genres I like to read, namely Scottish historical romance and Jane Austen fanfiction. So whenever I see a book of hers at one of my favorite book review sites, I pick it up. Unfortunately, I am usually disappointed with something in every book. For a long time, it was always the grammar and punctuation that were so bad. But lately, she seems to be getting some editing help from fellow author Elizabeth A. Lance. I wouldn't say the grammar and punctuation are perfect now, but they are improved. But more on that a bit later.
Let's discuss the plot and characters before that. I had some real issues with this book on these grounds. First, I thought it was peculiar that the author spent so much time in the present before heading to medieval Scotland. The setup of the book actually read like the beginning of a contemporary romance rather than a time travel one. But when the heroine actually got to Scotland... that is where the book fell apart for me. I'm going to try to avoid giving spoilers, but I think the author completely did detectives a disservice by choosing that career for the heroine of this particular book. She and her skills could have been used so much better throughout the book; it could have been awesome! I actually love the idea of a female detective in a time-travel romance. Instead, she ends up acting like a somewhat ditzy, clueless woman, which no hard-boiled female detective would ever be. And the end explanation for this was just nonsensical. Better that the author should have made her some other profession rather than first waste the skills that could have been used and second need to provide such an implausible reason for the character’s out-of-character deficiencies. Ugh.
I also didn't completely buy the romance story. In fact, I wouldn't even call it a romance. It seemed more like a lust story than a love story, and I am not a fan of that.
While the grammar, punctuation, and usage have greatly improved, there are now some bizarre little issues that actually drove me a little crazy as I was trying to read this book. I'm not sure if it's the author or her editor, but somebody loves them some em-dashes and ellipses! Now, I happen to be a fan of em-dashes and ellipses myself in writing, but I think they need to be used judiciously. In my own writing, I always consider whether to use these because they are such a strong device and really do have certain purposes for which they should be used. The first page alone had so many em-dashes that it was almost hard to parse the meaning of the surrounding words. And, of course, it made reading it choppy. This issue with having too many em-dashes and ellipses continued throughout the book. The em-dashes weren't even formatted right for American English. The way to structure a proper em-dash is with no spaces on either side of the dash; Brits use an en-dash with spaces on either end. What was in this book was an em-dash—the long one—with spaces around it! Correct in neither flavor of English!
Having read so many of this author's books over the years, I noted that this seems to be written in a different style than other ones; at times, it felt like a completely different author wrote it. I can't quite define what this style is, but it is certainly different from the JAFF I read years ago or even the Highlander romances that I read last year from this author. It's actually a huge change and one that is not quite typical of an author's evolution. I don't know what to make of it, but I do find myself somewhat disturbed by it.
Minor quibble: What does the title mean? Is the word "Away" missing? As written, it first made me think of the Highlander coming up to the heroine and dusting her off with a tiny broom!
All right, time to wrap this review up. Because of the romance plot and character issues, I cannot recommend this book.

I’m not really sure exactly how to rate this. It’s supposed to be a time travel but the heroine spends a lot of time in the current time setting the scene that exhibits her skills as a police detective and a good one at that. She is sent to the past and that’s all okay but I’m tired of reading about these skilled women that just turn into helpless ninny’s when they go back in time. I want the heroine to use her skills to improve the lives of the people in her new reality. This didn’t do that. She wasn’t a total loser but it was suddenly like she was less than she was. I realize in that time, women were treated as less but this is fiction. This is a personal peeve of mine and it may not hit anyone else the same way. I’ve been following this author and I’m never “sorry” I read the book but I’m left feeling like it was a good idea that could have been so much better than it was. Decent read, great story idea, my final opinion is that it could be great but was only good. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).

I love emerging myself into 16th century Scotland and read about the magical side of it, as written by Rebecca Preston. Time travel, the Fae, the good and the evil, Loch Ness' Nessie....it makes for quite an entertaining and magic filled hours of reading!
Elena is from the present time and is a detective who is investigating a couple of murders when she falls through some stairs and suddenly finds herself in 16th century Scotland. There she meets two other women like her (from books 1 & 2), as well as the Captain of the Guards, Brendan, with whom she instantly feels an attraction to. Unfortunately, with a disease spreading that is felling only the men, trust not being freely given and a dark presence that is messing with Elena's mind, she finds herself fighting for her life. With a few twists and turns, the story will keep you wanting to read more.

I've read the previous 2 books in this series and although they can be read as stand alone books, it helps to have the side character's stories. They are on KU, so you can read for free with your subscription and I would recommend that. Elena is a modern day police detective working a case in Baltimore Maryland when she is pulled bak in time to 16th century Scotland. Brendan is the Captain of the Guard at Urquhart Castle on the shores of Lock Ness. But there is more the castle and the occupants than meets the eye. Brendan and Elena are well written, interesting characters and the story has some interesting twists and turns along the way. My biggest problem with this book and with the previous 2 is the author just draws out the story way too much. Frankly I skipped chapters, they are just too repetitive. But, if you can get past that, there is a compelling story here.

There she finds several other women from 20th century America who have gone back in time and are now living there permanently and have made a life for themselves. She develops feelings for the Guard Brendan, but men are being drained of their energy, disappearing, and some have died. When she went back in time a woman saved her from drowning. Elena is a Baltimore detective investigating mysterious deaths when she falls down stairs and is hurtled back to Scotland in the middle ages where they have something similar occuring. However, she is reluctant to believe everyone on the sidhe being good and benevolent based on what Una, the lady who pulled her out of the loch tells her. Brandon, the head guardsman is inclined to trust her and her instincts initially but when her behaviour starts becoming slightly erratic after being ill this puts things between them in jeopardy.
A very good tale where I found I was getting angry with our heroine as she was being misled and manipulated but could not see it. I enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend it

This is the third book in this series. Although having some characters and mentioning events from previous books this can be read as a stand alone story.
Elena Cross is a good detective in Baltimore. While investigating a homicide she falls down some dilapidated stairs and wakes up in the 16th century at Loch Ness in Scotland
Brendan Grant is captain of the guard at Urquhart Castle on the shores of Lock Ness.
A situation develops in the village and so Elena and Brendon start to investigate together.
This is an easy to read book. Although I found it a little slow in places it was certainly not enough to stop reading.
I quite enjoyed this book.

This is intriguing and dramatic. When Elena arrived in the past, Brendan became fascinated by her. Elena was unsure about what to do with her confusing feelings for Brendan. They got along well, but Elena's friend, who was responsible for bringing Elena to the surface from the burgh, told her that all men evil, and Elena had a hard time ignoring that. When the men in the village started wasting away, Brendan and Elena started investigating the reason for it. There isn't as much passion or romance between them as their was between the couples in the previous books, but it's still an interesting story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

What series.
Swept By The Highlander: Highlander Forever Book 3

Brendan finally gets his book. Men have taken ill in the village and it's his job to find out why.
Elena is a cop in Baltimore and just what Scotland needs.
Nessie/Maggie did not have a big role in this book as she did in this one. If you loved books 1 and 2 as much as I did you will not be disappointed in this book. Great addition to the series. I wonder who gets his lassienext?

Dragged into the past when something went wrong during a mission, Elena found herself in a difficult and dangerous situation. As a policewoman, she had an agile, sagacious and deductive mind but none of that was helping her when it came to face a threat from the past that put her life and that of others at risk. A situation she had never imagined and that absorbed her mind. I liked that Brendan had his mind in place and was not clouded by the attraction he felt. I enjoyed the story that had suspense, intrigue, deception, a strange Paranormal, romance, passion and much mystery. I voluntarily reviewed this book that kept me interested until the end.

Wow, this is not a good book.
Wellll, almost dnf'ed this book more times then I could count. This woman, Elena, is supposed to be one of Baltimore's best detectives, but she couldn't find a rat in a ring box. Granted she was under a spell, but did she not remember a few hours ago? 🤔 when you finally find out she was under a glamor or whatever, you can't quite make the leap. I finished it because of Brendan, the hero. It was his story, I wanted to read, unfortunately he got stuck with Elena, the detective, loosely speaking. So sorry for wasting my own time. Brendan, you deserved better!

A well written story with nice storyline and plot. It is easy to read and captivating. The author has done her research and I like that very much.
Characters well described and defined. Their chemistry is flowing of the pages. I like time travel stories - mostly when they are going back in time. This is absolute enjoyable.
It is nice that we meet the women from earlier stories. A kind of catch up.
A lot of twists and turns, dark thoughts, death, illness and mystery is mixed into this story. The couple has to go through a lot before they can have their HEA.

I didn’t realise when I started this book that it was the third book in a series I had already started. Was nice to be reacquainted with all my favourite characters, Anna, Nancy, Maggie etc. The book had a gripping introduction with Elana’s life in Baltimore, then her transportation into the past. Loved the building of the relationship with Brandon, but felt there was a bit too much about ‘climate change’ in our time and the treatment of woman as second rate citizens. Still would recommend reading.

It should've been called "The possession of Elena"
Book 1 and 2 were better. This book should've been called "The Possession of Elena" for what the majority of what the story was about. Her special "cop" skills (for what she was sent there for) didn't even work in the end. So I gather it wasn't her "cop" skills that she was sent there for.
I find that the author expands too much on situations. I've gotten the point of what she's saying so not only am I skipping through long sex scenes but also long narratives of how a person feels.

Book three of the A Scottish Time Travel Romance-Highlander Forever series a well written story that held my interest until the end. Elena Cross a cop is swept back to the 16th century Scotland where she meets guard captain Brendan Grant. There is suspense, drama, danger evil, a baobhan sith, murder, and romance. I love the whole atmosphere of this series. 16th Century Scotland is a fantastic period. The castles, highlanders, superstitions and myths, appeal enormously to my imagination. This book does not disappoint. Brendan has been my favourite member of the clan from the very beginning, he's witty, sarcastic, and tries not to take himself too seriously. Elena is more than a match for him. Great story, beautifully written and constructed, I devoured this book.

This is another great addition to this series and this is book 3 of a Scottish Time Travel Romance: Highlander Forever. Elena is a cop she goes back in time to the 16th century, Brendan is the captain of the guard both are attracted to each other but when the men start becoming sick Elena gets the blame and they are calling her a witch but there is a lot more going on than anyone knows and Elena has been drawn into the danger.

Another wonderful story by this author! One minute you are in Baltimore and the next in 16th century Scotland. Strange happenings, deception, romance and confusion abounds. This story sweeps you away from the beginning and leaves you wondering who will come throught the Burgh next. Definitely worth your time!

Sometimes hard to follow
Examples:how
P. 193. Used name Nancy instead of Elena when referring to pang of guilt.
P. 224. What three? There was no lead up or I sure missed it.
There was an awful lot of time spent showing Elena's irrational reasoning when she was supposed to be so smart. It would have been nice to have a little more lead up to the spell she was under.
I really liked the first two of the series, hopefully the next will be more like them.

I enjoyed this book. Elena and Brendan's story was easy to read and held my attention well. I liked both characters and I thought that they made a good pair. The story was fun and exciting. There is plenty of emotional turmoil, drama, suspense and tension packed into this time travel romance to keep you focused and entertained. I am electing to post a forthright review.

Time trailer mind controlled
The premise of this is sound, but you flow thru the whole book with this angry cop not thinking for herself. A little not thinking is interesting, but I want a heroin that kicks ass. And if this fae person attacks men, where are the women to save the day. To figure out what's going on and save their friend. A little 2 dimensional.

The time travel is always fun and the descriptions of medieval times are entertaining. But this character was ridiculous. Elena was a skilled detective and couldn’t see what was clearly in front of her. I kept saying to myself, she’s just stupid. Disappointing
