MAGNIFIQUE!
I had heard of the movie "Tchao Pantin" with the famous French actor Coluche and decided to read the book. My expectations were not very high but I was really impressed by the story and the style.
Tchao Pantin brings you into a universe of hardness and disenchantment. It takes place in Paris but shows a different side of the famous capital, where poverty, racism and drug trafficking prevail. The characters are endearing and it was fascinating to read their complex inner thoughts. The narration only offers glimpses of their past lives and I enjoyed having to imagine the gaps myself.
As for the style, it reminded me of theatre monologues and it gave me an impression of being close to the characters. I can definitely see how it could easily be adapted into a movie and I look forward to watching it now. Another part I particularly enjoyed were the small impactful quotes and thoughts thrown out all over the book. The absurdity and nonchalance of the book were successful at making it meaningful.
Having heard about the movie for years but never watched it, it was a complete discovery for me. This book just slapped me in the face, by its authenticity, by describing an era so important for me (early eigthies in France), by making me feel like I was passing through Renaud's songs, meeting his characters flesh and bones, by ressucitating so many deep old memories from my previous life. The writing style, so brutal, efficient, was a real pleasure and so many quotes from this book can help describing the darkest moments and aspects of how life can be tough. And because a tiny glimpse of hope can be found at the end, and also because after one night sleep on it I just figured out some untold parts of the plot, I just started read it again...I didn't want to leave Lambert, Bensoussan and Lola...
