A Standalone Enemies to Lovers Romance

Amazon Bestselling Author Mickey Miller, brings you a sexy new enemies-to-lovers standalone romance.
Recklessly cocky. Brutally handsome. Exceptionally Talented.  Utterly Ruthless.  Meet my childhood crush, everybody.
Except "little" Shane North is all grown up now, and he's out for revenge...on me.

Before I moved away, Shane was my best friend's older brother. But Shane isn't the lanky, spindly boy I used to know. He's been replaced by a handsome man with broad, muscular shoulders and hockey scouts lining up to get him to play for their team.

When he "accidentally" sends me a selfie one night after a chance phone call, then shows up at my house per my mother's request, a passion ignites inside me that I've never felt once in my life.

But there's one big problem: Shane is holding onto an enormous secret. Something everyone in town seems to know but won't tell me. My father was the richest man in Black Mountain, and had his share of enemies, as reading his diary informs me.

The more I fight my attraction to Shane, the more I fall for him. Despite his secrets, recklessness, and temper, he's got a protective streak a mile wide for those he cares about. Which, after one very hot night, includes me.

My attraction to him comes on strong and without warning. But this is no fairy tale. This is a nightmare.

I just pray the big bad ice wolf known Shane North is on my side.

And before I make it out of Black Mountain, I'm going to have to confront the secrets about my father this town has tucked away.

Or should I say, if I make it out of this town.

A dark, gut-wrenching exploration of the barren, desolate wasteland of grief & awakening to hope for the future

I started this read a few edits ago. It released early, so I decided to start from the beginning.

I loved Mickey's little journey to the darker side. There is still some of his signature humor but a bit more cynical than usual. This is not a lighthearted read.

Black Mountain is not a happy or thriving town. Set in the cold, snowy Upper Peninsula of Michigan, there was a pervasive feel of cold as I read Shane & Natalie's story.

They are both grieving. Natalie; for her recently deceased father, the reason she has come back to Black Mountain after years away; and Shane; for his father, sister, and himself; although he hasn't faced all his losses fully. A fact that plays a role in his actions.

Natalie has unknowingly stumbled into a town that hates her. That she once called home and has happy memories of, but is now met with suspicion and resentment she doesn't understand, because she is about to learn her father wasn't the man she thought he was.

Shane, the only person she knows there, does not welcome her with open arms. And she discovers his sister, the girl she remembers as her best friend, died. She is confused by all of this since her parents kept it all from her.

Shane has hated & resented her for years because of things her father did. When face to face with her, he finds his present at odds with the pain of his past.

Dark, full of sorrow, revenge, coldness, but also some hope, change, a realization that something needs to change, or nothing will improve.

I loved Shane. His dark into light journey is a journey we can all relate to on some level.

While not full of Mickey's usual humor, this novel does not skimp on the heat. Natalie and Shane's chemistry is sizzling. The only heat in the cold barren landscape of both their hearts & Black Mountain. It also has a strong thread of suspense.

I received a review copy. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

‘she be little but she be mighty.’

Coming back home to Black Mountain after losing her father, Natalie wasn't in a good place. She hadn't been back here in years. Currently living in Florida, she wasn't familiar with this place anymore. That goes for the extremely cold weather and the people who lived here as well. .. What Natalie didn't know was things were about to change even more than it had already.
Shane, Natalie's childhood friend was not a fan of hers. I didn't fully understand at first but then the pieces started to fall in place.... They were drawn to each other and didn't understand why.... This attraction was full of secrets, anger, devious plans and physical need... Shane went through a horrible tragedy that changed him in a way he didn't know how to come back from. Seeing Natalie after all these years was making him feel things. He tried to fight it but he couldn't. ... I thought the plans that were made was ridiculous and crazy. On top of that Natalie and Shane's "relationship" was dysfunctional. Seriously! They had issues. Anyways, s*** went left and I wasn't expecting that. Hmmm, interesting....
... Now I'm sitting here after everything and I'm not sure how I feel about it...

“You won’t tell me anything! It’s like I’m talking to a brick wall or something!”

This book would make you feel like banging your head against the already mentioned brick wall would be a far better experience than suffering through the scenes in it.

The writing was repetitive, literally one thing would be said/thought by one of the characters and then 10 sentences later repeated 5 more times for good measure.

The hero would go off about some "plan" for eternity without giving you even the smallest detail. Like yeah, we know you have some shady plan, good job. How about you elaborate on that. Not to mention how he was bitter for half his life and hated the heroine for something she had no control over.

The main characters and their 'relationship' were so questionable, they would start to have some type of breakthrough with actually talking about each other only to end up making out & the running off to separate spaces. Talk about them acting mature.

The hero was written in a way the author thought would be appealing to women, but he comes off just as a POS. He was in no way subtle, or gentle, or considerate towards the heroine's feelings (her dad has just died and the 'hero' immediately jumped to the opportunity to destroy any happy memory she had of him). He would literally say how he needs to warn her to leave the town so she doesn't get hurt/killed only to postpone it in order to get laid. And don't even get me started on his friends.

Book is advertised as "Enemies to Lovers" when in reality is nothing like it, bully romance kind of fits it more (only the romance part feels fake af), at times it felt like a bad thriller/mystery too. This is what happens when a book tries to be so many things at once.

I was given an advance readers copy of this book, and I offered to read it with no expectations of anything from the author.

I have read a number of novels, published and not yet finished, by this author and I've found myself intrigued by his books.

This one though.. I couldn't finish. I discussed my concerns with the author before it was complete and the final product showed me that the author didn't take them seriously.

This book crossed lines. I didn't find it romantic. I found it "rapey". I am concerned that an author with this large of a following finds it acceptable to write about a male MC who thinks it's okay to do the things that he did and then advertise it has a romance book. Woman need to understand that holding someone against their will is not romantic. It's kidnapping, it's assault, it's rape culture. It's. Not. Okay.

I like you Mickey, but I'm ashamed of this book.

I have no words for how I felt about this book but WOW. I loved every minute of it. I read this book in one sitting and I didn’t want it to end. This book will pull you in and won’t let go. I loved the darker tone of the story. It was an edgy enemies to lovers’ romance. Shane and Natalie knew each other as kids but she moved away when her parents split up when she was 12. During this time, Shane suffered some very hard times and he went down a dark path. Years later, Natalie is back to clean out her father’s house and she connects with Shane again. The emotions you will feel when you are reading this story will be intense. The heat between them was so intense that I was feeling it. I loved this darker side of Mickey and I know that I will be reading this book again and again. This book is a one click buy and you won’t regret it because I know I didn’t.

This book has kind of a cold atmospheric feel to it but that works as the book takes place in a small town in Black Mountain, Northern Michigan in a town devastated by poverty and a terrible drug problem. Natalie Toft grew up in this town until her parents divorced and her mother took her to Florida to live. She’s back in town to wrap things up after her father recently died. Feeling lonely one night she reaches out to an old friend she hasn’t heard from in years only to discover from her friends brother Shane North that her friend died years ago. Shane is alternately bitter and flirty with her. At first he wants nothing to do with her but they eventually do get together and at this time Shane is torn. He had ulterior motives when they first connected and they weren’t good. But now he’s had a change of heart. He’s coming to care for her a great deal only plans are in motion…..
I’d forgotten but I started another book by this author and loathed it. In a way it’s good I forgot since I quite like this one. Shane is a good guy. He hasn’t got caught up in the poverty and hopelessness. He was headed places with his hockey skills but stayed to help his mother and then the town.
I also quite like Natalie. She was still quite young when she moved away and has no idea how much her father factored into the devastation of the town.
This is a book I can see reading again and that’s always a good sign.

Black Ice was raw, edgy, and unpredictable... unique and a little on the dark side. The plot is well-thought out and there's a smooth flow that keeps you interested. There's danger, revenge, tragedy, angst, suspense, secrets, lies, and so much more in this enemies to lovers romance.

I volunteered to review an advance reader copy of this book.

Wow - much darker than the typical Mickey Miller love story but this only enhances how good a book this really is. Regret, misunderstanding, revenge and hope all mixed up in the tale of Natalie and Shane. Each chapter got more intense and the characters past, present and future left so many questions I could not put it down until I finished. I need more books like this Mickey Miller!!

I’ve read quite a few of Miller’s books but this was by far my least favorite. He’s been putting out books every couple of months and this one seemed rushed. It was just so poorly written it seemed like an author’s first attempt at a “romance” novel. It’s was very anticlimactic from an enemies to lovers theme. There was was little hate to cause tension that when they finally got together it was a happy feeling. It was also hard for me to get into because of the very unrealistic plot as well.

The female was just dumb and naive and the male character has so many psychological red flags. He planned on kidnapping her for revenge for such a long time and then they end up together?! It’s so messed up I can’t handle it. It was abusive and had a rapey vibe. Also, how about the fact they murdered someone and they feel no remorse and they get off with zero problems.

This book was trying to be too many things at once. Also, the title does not encapsulate the book. There is literally one mention of black ice that has nothing to do with the overall theme of the book. His books also have so many typos that a simple run of spell check could catch. How does the editor miss them? Has anyone else noticed this about his books? Each book I think the typos will get better but alas, I’m disappointed once more. I don’t understand why this book is getting good ratings.

I absolutely hate writing reviews like this, especially when it’s for an author I have followed and loved for so long. And I know not every book is for everyone, but it still hurts my heart to write this review. I contemplated for so long about what rating I was going to give this book. I almost DNF’d the book twice, but I pushed on, because after all this is Mickey Miller and I have been a fan for years now. I could not get into the story as much as I would have liked. I found the heroine to be very naive in a lot of ways, she didn’t come across her age for me. There was actually quite a few things that didn’t line up for me, but to protect this review from spoilers I won’t be able to elaborate on those.

I did like the underlying suspenseful feeling of the book, and I could not deny that it had some pretty steamy scenes. The cover is also one of my favs from this author.

This is my voluntary arc review.

Loved the darker edge of this enemies to lovers romance. The combination hatred and heat from these characters made for one heck of a read. So much different than what I’m used to reading by this author and I loved it. With each story his writing just gets better and better. I cannot wait to see what he comes up with next!

Black Ice was different than I expected- in a good way!! It’s intense, dark, and edgy with revenge, secrets, and romance. It kept me HOOKED with the story. It’s well written and the plot is developed and well thought out. The characters make you fall in love with them. And it will keep you on the edge of your seat. While it’s different than Mickey’s other books, it’s just as good. Go one click!!

A former Hockey player reunites with a small-town girl who needs to return home and face the sins of her father's past.  What could go wrong?

For Natalie Toft, apparently, everything does go wrong.  When she first reaches out to Shane North, she gets more than what she bargained for.  Rude, moody and broody, Natalie realizes that she doesn't know the Shane of the present that she knew of the past.  But she's in desperate need of help, and Shane is the only man for the job.

Having Natalie come back into town gives Shane more trouble than he can handle.  Caught up in the sins of her father's past, Shane has a hard time getting past history to see the present in front of him.  But Natalie's determination to make things right goes a long way to suddenly making Shane lose his focus of revenge and find a new purpose in his life--to make Natalie his once and for all.

This was a great book by Mickey Miller, and I can't wait to read more from him!

What a fun start to the year 2020 with an amazing book from Mickey Miller.
Miller brings us another side of him, a slightly dark side interwoven with the amazing romance he knows how to write.
Shane and Natalie An amazing story that draws you in. On the one hand, you get the petting on the cheek and the other you slap it.
Miller has combined the dark element with the romantic, letting you slowly understand the way things are. Constructs the plot in such a way that you fall in love and realize that not everything is black and white that also has gray in the middle.
And finally, the mind and the heart win the anger and resentment.
Highly recommend.

Enemies to Lovers

Not sure how I feel about this book. The last few i read by this author were not this dark. Natalie returns to her childhood home following her father's death. As she goes through his things and finds the number to her old friend things start to get strange. Her childhood best friend's older brother answers and she finds that everything is not as it seems in the small mining town. There are lots of darker under currents, revenge plots, murder and cover up. Felt like there was a lot of different thinks going on. Couple small typos but overall will continue to try this author.

Natalie is back in Black Mountain, Michigan, where she had lived until she was 12, now her father has died and she has to go through his personal items. When Natalie lives in Black Mountain she had a best friend Louisa and her brother Shane. Natalie’s dad had owned the Toft Mine. Natalie didn’t come back to Black Mountain until she was in college. Natalie wanted to talk with a friend and called to talk to Louisa, Shane answered and informed Natalie that Louisa had died a few years back. Shane is angry after losing his dad in an accident at the Toft Mine and then his sister a few years later.

This was an enjoyable enemies/friends to lovers with a touch of a sports romance. Shane and Natalie have a shared chemistry that isn’t always synced for quite some time but witnessing their connection develop firsthand had me wanting to see where things end up. There’s a nice blend of secrets as well as romance throughout the story, moments that will have you on the edge wondering which path the story will go.

Overall I liked this book. Natalie comes back to take care of her dads things since he died. People in the town have issues with her because of her dad. I will admit some people took it way too far. However, sometimes people handle grief in terrible ways. Luckily Shane came to his senses and saved her. This then allowed them to have their happy ending together.

This story was so captivating. It had my attention from cover to cover. It had me on the edge of my seat wondering what next? This story of two people who both loss people they love and loss them in a way that will stick with them. One blames the other and her family for the loss of everyone in his life. This story was heart-wrenching but amazing!

I'm REALLY liking this touch of dark Mickey Miller!! This book made my heart race, my knees clench and made me worry about the characters that came alive on the page. The action is so crazy, the sex is smokin' hot and my emotions were all over the place! I tried to read as fast as I could, but I fizzled out around 2am, even though I really wanted to keep going. I definitely recommend this book. And the ones who need an HEA, you are in for an absolutely wonderful ending. Enjoy!!

Black Ice is a departure from Mickey Miller’s usual sexy rom com. Shane and Natalie have an undeniable attraction but secrets from the past threaten to tear them apart. Steamy, emotional, intense & suspenseful with a surprising twist at the end. Well done Mr Miller!

Egads, what did I just read?

Plot overview: I...don’t even know. Sorry. I’ve got nothing.

Judging by the cover, I thought this was going to be a sports romance with an enemies-to-lovers element. That’s not really what I got. There’s hardly any hockey in the book, and it’s really more a bully romance, in my opinion. But, long-story-short, here’s where the book fell down:

The heroine:
I can’t even remember her name and I don’t care enough to go look it up. That’s how much of an impression this chick left on me. All I can tell you for sure is that she’s a flaming idiot. She’s super immature, and apparently doesn’t mind having a dude treat her like complete crap, because she kept coming back for more every time Shane shit on her. (Proverbial shit. Not real shit. But even that wouldn’t have really surprised me with this book, if I’m being honest) I pretty much hated She Whose Name I Don’t Care To Recall in chapter 1 and she never managed to turn my opinion of her around in any way. She’s whiny, clingy, and needy, too. (The trifecta of sucky romance heroines) If the hero had pushed her off a cliff at the end of the book, I wouldn’t have been too angry about it.

The hero:
I use the term “hero” very, very loosely here. Shane’s the type of guy who harbors vehement hate in his heart for a girl for reasons that were totally out of her control. He’s the type of guy who plans to kidnap and “punish” said girl (who technically did nothing wrong), and even encourages/recruits other bullies to threaten/scare/hurt her. He’s a douchebag twatwaffle of the highest order and I had ZERO tolerance for him. But since I hated the heroine too, I felt kind of conflicted about the whole thing. I mean, they kind of deserved each other, so...yeah, there’s that…

Plot weirdness:
There’s nothing in the blurb that really hints at how dark and twisty the plot gets, or that the hero and heroine would kill a guy, then get turned on by how they’re willing to kill for each other. (Yep. That happened. I took issue when it happened on Sons of Anarchy and I took issue with it here. It’s stupid.) A heads-up would’ve been nice.

Typos and grammar errors:
I’m not a grammar Nazi. Not by ANY stretch of the imagination. I’m willing to overlook a fair number of typos if I’m enjoying a story. But when I’m hating a story, like I was hating this story, those errors just sort of jump off the page and slap me in the face. I was slapped in the face many, many times while reading this one.

Anyhoo, long-story-short, this one was NOT my cuppa. But if you don’t mind sports romances that aren’t really sports romances, heroes who are giant turds, heroines who are too stupid to live, and dark and twisty plot weirdness that’s riddled with typos, this one might be up your alley. To each his own. That’s my motto.
