Hello, Earth! is a beautiful picture book homage to our planet. There are poems that talk about the earth and its place in the solar system, its origins, its geological features and biomes, its creatures, humans' interactions with the planet, and more. The poems are relatively simple and sweet, but the author utilizes poetic devices that add a sense of lyrical style. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and contain so many fun little details; it's almost like an Easter egg hunt to find them all! And at the end of the book is a non-fiction section that talks more in-depth about the concepts from each of the poems, making this sweet book an ideal addition to a classroom library!

Hello Earth is a gorgeously illustrated, beautifully and poetically written exploration of planet earth. This book for young people is a moving, and almost spiritual experience wrapped in the science, history, and wonder of a planet that provides everything we humans need to survive and thrive. This is a must read for children and adults alike.

Drat, I wish this weren't by Sidman, whom I admire and esteem. I am emphatically not the audience for this sickeningly, anthropomorphized series of beautifully illustrated musings, rhetorical questions and humanist eco-prayers.

Can you hear us Earth?
Does that mean that each of us are floating among the stars?
Earth, are you saving all that frozen water for a time you'll really need it?
Earth, is it true that the moon pulls your oceans with her twirling gravity?
Help us remember the quiet, daily things we can do
to keep your water clean,
your air fresh,
your soil full of life.

My scientific heart cries tears of rage. The questions and musings - I can not call them poems - seem often completely obvious or utterly unanswerable - the Earth not being sentient or capable of planning. I also deeply resent the narrator speaking for the reader and implying with pre-enlightenment, animist, superstition that we should interpret weather events as the Earth speaking to us. No thank you.
If these poems were espousing comparable, anti-scientific, organized religious sentiment I believe we would be hearing condemnations not praise. Pushing anti-scientific, eco-religion on kids seems just as bad to me.

What a beautiful book that has the writer or reader talking to Earth as though you were on a stroll or sharing a cup of tea together. Speaking of Earth's provision for its inhabitants, it's rich diversity of design, the care that creatures - specifically man - need to take in living on the Earth, and a small peek into scientific information about Earth. At the end of the book, there are several pages of more educational text into specifics addressed in the book. This is especially nice for expanded learning.
A beautiful and varied book.

While presented as a book of poetry, the verse is rather free and has no specific rhyme, meter, or cadence. To my understanding, the writing is more of a lyrical prose. Very good. Enjoyable to read. And quite informative.
I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations of this "chapter" picture book. The are full of interesting and educational imagery that provide the reader opportunities to ponder and visually explore ideas.

Eerdmans' is a Christian publishing company. This book is more of a secular publication than Christian or Biblical. The book's text indicates a very old Earth and an evolution the Earth and all it contains. While not explicitely stated, it is definitely inferred. I don't find this detrimental as the intent of the book is to understand and care for Earth as man's place of residence. The beauty of Earth and Earth's bounty for man. A well-done book on environmentalism for the young child.

I believe that as a Christian parent, it behooves parents to present varied ideas to children and this book does that quite unobtrusively. It is a lovely book and I like it quite a lot. It is a must-have for children's libraries of all types - public, school, classroom, homeschool.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are mine, alone and are freely given.

I get it... no one likes poetry that actually follows the rules of a form these days (actually, kids still like it—just adults). But if you're going to break all the rules, at least do it intentionally, not out of pure conformity. Some of the vocabulary choices seemed designed to be surprising with no real reason and wistful letters to an anthropomorphic yet silent earth got a little too hippie for me (even being something of a greenie myself).

Nice illustrations, but TBH, I feel like this is one where the topic is the subject of the acclaim rather than the literary execution. Not that the poems were bad, just not life-changing.

Joyce Sidman always does such a beautiful job of combining poetry and nonfiction. My favorite lines are in Noisy:

We want
so much
for ourselves,
Earth.

We forget to be happy
with what
you have already
given us.

I also love the poem Questions and Answers. Such a beautiful tribute to this amazing planet where we reside.

Sidman's spare, accessible, conversational verse celebrates the Earth's wonders and emphasizes humanity's responsibility as steward. Lora's illustrations depict Earth at a distance giving the perspective of omnipotent observers of the action happening on or beneath Earth's surface.

Hello Earth! is a collection of poems to the earth, written by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Miren Asiain Lora. This is a big book—each panel is the size of an 8.5”-11” standard size piece of paper. Lora makes good work of the space, filling it with beautiful paintings of the planet and beyond. It’s actually my understanding that, unlike most traditional illustrated books, in this case the art came first. Lora provided the art and Sidman wrote a poem based on what she saw in the work. As such, the poetry fits the art perfectly, bringing depth to both types of artwork. Her words are both grounded and ethereal, engaging with the mysteriousness of this place we inhabit and how it is beyond us and yet is firm in the commitment to care for this mystery that God has created for us.

In Mysteries, Sidman hopes that there is always more to learn:

We hope you
Still have secret places,
Earth:
Hidden forest,
Mysterious plants
And creatures…
Undiscovered
Unexplained.

Our Part reminds us of our need to care for the earth:

Earth,
We are part of you.
We are connected.
In taking care of you,
We take care of ourselves.

Something that I would caution readers is that while Eerdman’s is a Christian publisher, Hello Earth! contains references to evolution. In one poem, Deep Currents, Sidman writes “Long ago we came from the sea, and it calls to us.” In informational pages at the end, there is reference to the earth being 4.55 billion years old and that “humans evolved just in the last two hundred thousand years.” While the fundamental element of the faith is simply that God created, theistic evolution is a fairly minority view and such an explicit reference is likely to limit the audience. At very least, it is something to be aware of should you choose to read this book with your little ones.

As a whole, Hello Earth! is almost completely “secular”—under the assumption that “secular” means “does not mention God.” In truth, that’s a pretty poor definition of the word, but I use to mean that there’s nothing explicitly Christian about the book. (Even though I would argue that extolling God’s creation is pretty Christian…) The point being that most Christian books about God’s creation have a focus on…well…God. And this book, from a Christian publisher, focuses on the earth God gave us and our ecological connection to it.

My friend and critique group buddy Joyce Sidman has a gorgeous new poetry picture book, which I’m sharing here with you today! It’s called Hello, Earth! Poems to Our Planet (Eerdmans, 2021), and it’s just wonderful. Joyce wrote these poems to existing art by Miren Asiain Lora, and the images are whimsical and detailed and thought-provoking. (In fact, knowing Joyce wrote the poems to go with the art, it might be interesting to use an image from the book as a writing prompt, before you read the accompanying poem.)

All the poems are written from the point of view of kids talking to our planet, and Joyce has talked about how she wants kids to not only love the earth but to feel the earth loving them back. I love that! Here’s a poem from this lovely collection.

Long Memory

You were so different once:
a huge spinning cloud of gas,
a vast swirling sea of lave.
Finally your crust cooled
and settled into land
and water.

Even then, you kept changing.
You’ve felt giant footsteps
trample your back,
ancient roots dig into your soil,
fantastical leaves and flowers
breathe your air.

Earth,
you must have a very long memory.
Which was your favorite part?

In poems that speak directly to Earth, the planet, herself, this collection of poems explores a variety of scientific concepts. The poems speak to the wonder of walking on the earth’s surface, of trying to imagine its actual size. They look back in time to the dinosaurs, to volcanoes and earthquakes and the continents themselves. Poems explore the various ecosystems on earth from jungles to mountains to deserts. They look deep into the water of the planet and the creatures who dwell there. Then the text circles around to our own role as humans in caring for the earth and making sure it stays well for millennium to come.

As always, Sidman’s poems are both accessible for young readers but also expansive, asking us to look beyond the surface of the subject to the wonders within. In the poems in this book, her innate curiosity about the subject is infectious, giving space for young minds to dream and consider how they feel and think about the subjects Sidman writes about. The final pages of the book offer more information about the earth as well as resources to explore and ways to take action to save the planet.

The illustrations are mostly landscapes, sharing volcano eruptions, storms, wind and quiet moments on small islands. The horizons often line up as the pages turn, offering a feeling of continuity from one natural wonder to the next even if they are far apart on the planet. Beautifully painted, the images are joyous celebrations of our world.

A great poetry collection that invites exploration. Appropriate for ages 6-10.

Hello Earth! Poems to our Planet is a collection of conversational-styled poems written by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Miren Lora for ages 5-9 years. This collection of poems feels like a letter to our planet that explores the beauty of the earth and our natural world. I rated this book 5 stars because more multiple reasons, the first being the effectiveness of the style the author chose. The way I read these poems, it felt like a love letter to Earth, fully appreciating her journey in the solar system, the beautiful nature she has created, and the cycles that are vital for our lives. The author speaks to Earth as a sentient being and fully connects our human experiences to the planet. The next reason is because of how effective the illustrations were in tying the poetry together with the message it’s trying to convey. I think the illustrations are beautiful in conveying the beauty of earth while connecting that to human experience and existence. Lastly, I fully appreciate the last section of the book where the author goes into depth about how the earth works in direct relation to each of the poems. I think that these poems are perfect for children and the ending section can further enhance an understanding and connection to what is being talked about. It’s an effective way to mix beautiful poetry with information. I think these poems would be appealing to young readers because the poetry is short and sweet with very immersive illustrations to guide them. I think this book is a nice way of introducing learning about the earth and its functions early in childhood.

Hello, Earth! Poems to Our Planet is quite the tribute to Earth. Just as our Earth evolved around 4.54 billion years ago, this book has evolved from a 2016 book of poetry, published in Spain, using the same pictures by Spanish artist, Miren Asiain Lora. This 2021 publication uses the same illustrations; however, Joyce Sidman has written new poetry to accompany Miren Asiain Lora's drawings. I find it interesting that rather than decipher the Spanish poetry, Sidman created her own. This seems like a great form of literary recycling!

The poetry book honors and explores the Earth, pointing out the importance of caring for our planet. The back of the book provides interesting facts and information about the Earth. There are resources for kids projects and organizations dedicated to caring for our Earth.

This book is so good, I instantly had to buy a copy for myself after borrowing it from the library. The illustrations are gorgeous while the poems are simple, informative, and thought provoking. Having this in any classroom would be perfect!

This could be used it any Earth related lessons, even if you just read a single poem in correlation. It has topics ranging from outer space and tectonic plates to recycling and our relationship with Earth. The most resourceful part of this book for a classroom is in the back, it has “More about how the Earth works” which provides facts in relation to each poem. Not only this, but it also provides resources so you can learn more about helping the Earth and a list of books that are based on Earth. Personally, I believe this book to be a wonderful addition to any classroom or personal library, no matter the age of the reader.

Sidman never disappoints, and this is a must-have for use in reading-writing-science-climate- craft sessions in classrooms. That, of course, comes after reading for the pure joy of the language, art, and voice in this coherent collection that explores every aspect of the remarkable home planet we all too often disrespect and abuse.
The brief expository back matter is ideally written to clarify and invite further questions and investigations, along with multiple readings of each poem to discover significant word relationships and concepts.

I like the coversational tone of the poems. The questions posed throughout the collection reveal childlike wonderment held for this wonderful planet we call home. The final poem, ALWAYS AT HOME is followed by meaty Back Matter including:
More About How the Earth Works (Earth's Age, Earth's Size, Earth's History, Earth's Layers, Plate Tectonics, Continetnal Drift, Rotation and Orbit, Powerhouse Plants, Altitude, Ecosystems, Gravity, Oceans,Water Cycles and Currents, Human Impact, Messages from the Earth, New species, Living with the Earth) To Find Out More, Further Reading.

Poets addressed to our wondrous planet that both celebrate and explain some of its geologic features. Sidman's poetry is wonderful as always and here it feels conversational and personal. My only grumble is that at times the font doesn't show up strongly against the background colors of the illustrations so my aging eyes often had difficulties.

Lovely large scale illustrations and additional information on the geology of our planet in the back matter. Also in the back matter are additional resources for kids about climate change, being a citizen scientist and ways kids can help our home.

A book full of poems addressing various elements about the Earth that are well-written and engaging! Best of all is the back matter that contains 6 pages detailing more about how the earth works! Readers can learn about how old the earth is, plate tectonics, human impact and new species. I like how the author includes resources for ways kids can help, understanding climate change and more. Beautiful illustrations! I am so excited to share this book with my students! I can see using this book during Poetry Month and for Earth Day! Two thumbs up for this book!

HELLO EARTH! POEMS TO OUR PLANET is a wonderful collection of poems written by Joyce Sidman on a variety of topics relating to our planet. There are poems about volcanoes, the ocean, and so much more. Joyce chose to use question poems and the voice in each poem is so wonderfully child-like that I marveled at how she was able to capture it.

The illustrations by Miren Asianin Lora are beautiful and bring depth to the poems that I can’t imagine without some of the pictures! That’s a true marriage of text and imagery.

What letters would you write to Earth? Joyce Sidman has lots of questions and observations she poses in poetry forms. The art is expansive and adorable. The pages are extra large and the people and even dinosaurs are tiny in comparison. I love this perspective as though we are seeing Earth's view. My favorite poem is about seeing our planet but also standing on the surface of earth and the tension of that thought.

What a lovely book to have read on Earth Day. I did my part by recycling. The earth and it's resources are important to us and if we use then wisely and replenish them and protect them we will live happier and longer together. The mysteries are out there to solve still, but there will always be some left for other generations to find. Hey it's April today and it snowed yesterday and today. I think the snow globe is best shaken in certain months of the year. Each season deserves it's wonders.

Engaging poems that will appeal to a wide age range. The deceptively simple poems cover topics ranging from the Earth's size to plate tectonics. The information that could be considered "dry" is presented in an appealing way, making learning fun. For kids who want to learn more there is back matter that includes information broken up into topics (each topic = a poem), websites, and a book list.

It's Poetry Month and today is Earth Day so I thought I'd trot out the children's book that I've had on my Sora list to read. It's a lovely collection of poems celebrating the planet and then includes back matter about each page in reference to the ocean, biomes, Earth's layers, etc.

The colors that span the ocean to volcanoes and space all blend well together and compliment the poetry. Not the strongest necessarily in either realm, but a nice read nonetheless.

In Joyce Sidman’s poems, nestled amidst Miren Asiain Lora’s exquisite illustrations on double-page spreads, children studying Earth talk to the planet and ask thought-provoking questions such as “Earth, is it true / that the moon / pulls at your oceans / with her twirling gravity?” Back matter includes “More About How the Earth Works” (explanations of scientific concepts in the poems) and resources. 5 stars. Thoughtful poems about all aspects of the earth, its beginnings, landforms and weather, and the effects of its people. Bluish palette for the expansive illustrations very effective, adding to the feel of the poems. Happy surprise to see the back matter “More about how the Earth works”. Interesting perspective on earth. The "tiny" humans in most illustrations (except with the dinosaurs) give it a certain sense of whimsy, although some might be a bit disturbed by ones caught up in a tornado. There is plenty of back matter in the end. I have enjoyed several of Sidman's previous books, and selected this one when I saw it included on NSTA's Outstanding Trade Book list.

This book was super educational and also suitable for children in school learning about all of these topics in class. The only issue I found with this story is it is inconsistent with itself; however, if a teacher was showing this to students, these poems can be applied easier rather than just reading this to a child for fun. I loved the use of poetry and illustrations in this story.

I love poetry and Joyce Sidman did such a beautiful job. Her poems show how incredible the earth is and make readers think and pay more attention to the world around us. She is very detailed in her poetry when she describes the earth. I think the illustrations are so beautiful and go along perfectly with each poem.

These poems were short and sweet and I loved that they were almost like love letters to the Earth, rather than just talking about the planet. The artwork is adorable! I spent most of the time reading this just looking at the details and cute little characters. A great kids book or a book that makes you slow down and think.🌎
